Chapter 2 - The Place Beyond Frost

Warmth.

That was the first thing Eira felt.

It was wrong.

Her body tensed instantly, panic rising before her eyes even opened.

Warmth didn't exist out there.

Not beyond the boundary.

Not in that frozen hell.

So this—

This wasn't real.

Her eyes snapped open.

The first thing she saw was darkness.

Not complete darkness.

But dim.

Cold.

Controlled.

The ceiling above her was unfamiliar—smooth, metallic, faintly glowing with thin lines of pale blue light that pulsed like something alive.

Eira sucked in a sharp breath and pushed herself up—

—or tried to.

Her body barely moved.

Weak.

Heavy.

A soft, unfamiliar fabric shifted beneath her fingers.

Not snow.

Not ice.

A bed.

Her heart slammed violently against her ribs.

She forced herself upright this time, ignoring the dizziness clawing at her mind.

Her vision blurred for a second—

Then steadied.

She wasn't outside anymore.

The room around her was unlike anything she had ever seen.

The walls curved slightly, seamless and metallic, glowing faintly with the same cold blue light as the ceiling.

There were no windows.

No doors that she could see.

No way out.

Her breathing quickened.

"Where…?"

Her voice came out hoarse.

Weak.

Memory hit her all at once.

The storm.

The cold.

Him.

Eira's hands tightened into fists.

That thing.

That… man.

Not human.

Her pulse spiked as she looked down at herself.

Her clothes were different.

Gone were the torn, frozen layers she had been wearing.

In their place was something softer.

Fitted.

Dark.

It clung to her body like it had been made for her.

Her stomach twisted.

Someone had changed her.

Him.

A chill ran down her spine—

And not from the cold.

Eira swung her legs over the edge of the bed, her movements slow but determined.

She needed to get out.

Now.

The moment her feet touched the ground—

The room shifted.

A low hum filled the air.

Eira froze.

A section of the wall dissolved.

Not opened.

Not slid.

Dissolved.

Like it had never been there to begin with.

Her breath hitched.

And then—

He stepped in.

Rhaekon Virel.

Eira's entire body went rigid.

He looked exactly the same.

Unchanged.

Untouched.

Perfect.

Cold.

That glowing eye locked onto her instantly.

And just like before—

She couldn't move.

Not completely.

But enough.

Enough to feel it.

That pressure.

That invisible force pressing down on her.

Owning the air she breathed.

Owning her.

"You're awake."

His voice was the same.

Low.

Controlled.

Eira swallowed hard, forcing herself to take a step back.

"Where am I?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he walked toward her.

Slow.

Measured.

Each step deliberate.

Eira's heart pounded harder with every inch he closed between them.

Her back hit the edge of the bed.

Nowhere left to go.

"This is not a place your kind has a name for."

Her brows furrowed, fear mixing with confusion.

"What does that even mean?"

He stopped in front of her.

Close.

Too close.

"It means," he said calmly, "you are no longer in your world."

Her breath caught.

"That's not possible."

"It already happened."

Eira shook her head weakly.

"No… no, I just crossed the barrier—"

"You crossed more than that."

Silence.

Heavy.

Her thoughts scrambled, trying to make sense of it.

Failing.

Her gaze flickered toward the opening behind him.

Escape.

A chance.

She moved.

Fast as she could.

Two steps.

That was all she got.

Before—

Her body froze mid-motion.

Completely.

Eira's breath hitched in panic.

She couldn't move.

At all.

Not her arms.

Not her legs.

Not even her fingers.

Only her eyes.

Slowly—

She turned her gaze toward him.

Rhaekon hadn't moved.

Not physically.

But his hand was slightly raised.

Control.

Absolute.

Fear slammed into her chest like a wave.

"What… what are you doing to me?!"

His expression didn't change.

"You are resisting."

Her pulse raced.

"Of course I am!"

A flicker passed through that glowing eye.

Not anger.

Interest.

"You will learn not to."

Her stomach dropped.

With a slight motion of his fingers—

Her body released.

Eira gasped, stumbling forward, barely catching herself.

She turned on him instantly, breath shaking.

"You don't get to control me!"

Silence.

Then—

Rhaekon stepped closer.

And this time—

She felt it before he even touched her.

That pressure.

That weight.

Crushing.

"You misunderstand your position."

Her breath faltered.

His hand lifted again—

And this time, when it reached her—

It didn't stop.

It settled against her throat.

Just like before.

Eira froze.

Her body remembered.

Fear coiled tight inside her.

But his grip didn't tighten.

It held.

Steady.

Possessive.

"You survived where none of your kind should."

His voice dropped slightly.

"That makes you… rare."

Her heart pounded.

"I didn't ask for this…"

"No."

His thumb tilted her chin upward again.

"But you crossed into it."

Her breath trembled.

"I want to go back."

For the first time—

There was a pause.

A real one.

That glowing eye dimmed slightly.

"Not possible."

The words hit harder than anything else.

Eira's chest tightened painfully.

"No… there has to be—"

"There isn't."

Final.

Absolute.

Tears burned at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall.

"I'm not staying here."

Another pause.

Then—

A faint shift in his expression.

Not soft.

Not kind.

Something darker.

"You are."

Her stomach dropped.

His hand slid from her throat—

Down.

Stopping just above her heart.

Eira froze again.

"You belong to this place now."

Her pulse slammed against her ribs beneath his hand.

"And to me."

Silence shattered inside her mind.

"No."

It came out weaker than she wanted.

But she meant it.

Rhaekon's gaze held hers.

Unmoving.

Unyielding.

"Defiance is inefficient."

Her hands curled into fists.

"I don't care."

Another flicker in his eye.

Stronger this time.

Then—

He leaned closer.

Close enough that she could feel his breath against her skin.

Cold.

"You will."

A shiver ran through her.

Not from the temperature.

From the certainty in his voice.

From the way her body reacted—

Even when her mind refused.

He straightened.

And just like that—

The pressure eased.

But it didn't disappear.

It lingered.

Wrapped around her.

A silent reminder.

"You will adapt."

Eira didn't respond.

Couldn't.

Her thoughts were too loud.

Too chaotic.

Too afraid.

Rhaekon turned away.

The wall behind him began to dissolve again.

Before stepping through, he paused.

Without looking back—

"If you attempt to escape again…"

The air grew heavier instantly.

"…I will remove your ability to try."

A chill ran through her entire body.

Then—

He was gone.

The wall sealed behind him.

Leaving her alone.

Eira stood there, frozen in place.

Her chest rose and fell unevenly.

Her heart refused to slow.

Her mind replayed his words.

Over and over again.

You belong to this place now.

Her hands trembled.

"…No."

But even as she said it—

The room didn't feel like a prison.

It felt worse.

Like a cage that already knew she couldn't escape.
