Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: Fairy tail Mages

After feeding, the Dragon Coat settled against Calvin's shoulders with palpable contentment.

And then he felt it: his cracked ribs, which had been aching constantly for two days, suddenly stopped hurting. The exhaustion that had been building from magical depletion faded significantly. His overall vitality increased, as if he'd slept for eight hours and eaten a full meal.

The coat was sharing absorbed life force with him. Enhancing his healing factor. An ability it had developed on its own, without his explicit design.

Calvin stood very still, processing this development.

His creations were evolving. Developing will. Growing beyond their initial parameters based on accumulated experience and absorbed patterns.

This was exactly what he'd been trying to achieve with the Tiger's resurrection—creating life that could grow and adapt. He'd failed because he didn't understand the fundamental pattern of Living Creatures. But apparently, his partial successes were teaching him through practical demonstration.

The Coat wasn't truly alive. Neither was Ivory. But they existed in a state between inanimate object and living organism, sustained by his magic and capable of limited independent action.

A small smile crossed Calvin's face. Genuine pleasure at understanding something new.

He was getting closer. Closer to comprehending what Life actually meant in this world. Closer to successful resurrection. Closer to keeping his promise to the Tiger.

But the magnitude of the task was also becoming clear. Life wasn't just biological processes or magical energy. It was pattern complexity—layers upon layers of interlocking systems that self-regulated, adapted, and evolved.

He'd need more data. More experiments. More time.

And more resources.

Calvin looked upstream toward the mountains. The lacrima concentration was definitely higher there. If he could find a major deposit, he'd have enough material to attempt more sophisticated creations.

He was just about to start walking when Ivory pulsed a warning.

Three life signatures approaching from downstream. Humanoid. Moving quickly. One signature burned significantly hotter than the others—magically active, powerful.

Calvin's first instinct was to hide. Humans meant social interaction, which he'd never been good at. But he was also curious. These were the first people he'd encountered since arriving in this world.

And if they were mages, they might have information about nearby guilds.

He adjusted his coat, checked that Ivory was loaded, and waited.

The signatures drew closer.

Natsu burst through the tree line first, Happy flying overhead. Lucy followed a moment later, breathing hard from the chase.

They all froze when they saw Calvin.

Six and a half feet of white-haired stranger in a black scaled coat, holding what looked like an ivory gun, standing casually beside a pile of stripped crocodile bones and a waterfall that sparkled in the afternoon light.

Natsu's eyes lit up. "Whoa! Cool coat! Are you a mage?"

Calvin stared at him. Pink hair. Distinctive scarf. Unnatural body temperature visible even without life sense.

Natsu Dragneel. Fire Dragon Slayer. Main character.

Which meant the blonde was Lucy Heartfilia. And the cat was Happy.

Calvin had not expected to meet them this soon.

He'd also not prepared for social interaction with canonical protagonists.

After a long, awkward pause, Calvin said the only thing that came to mind:

"Yes. I'm a mage."

Natsu grinned. "I knew it! You smell like magic! I'm Natsu, this is Happy and Lucy. We're from Fairy Tail!"

Fairy Tail.

The guild he'd been planning to find.

Standing right in front of him.

Calvin processed this improbable coincidence and decided that fate had patterns too, apparently.

"Calvin," he said. "I was going to look for a guild but ended up lost in the forest."

It was better to lie for now, even though he disliked lying.

Lucy perked up. "Really? Are you looking to join one?"

"Hopefully." Calvin paused, trying to figure out what normal people said in this situation. "What are you doing here?"

"We're looking for someone! A friend," Happy explained. "His name is Macao and he went missing on a quest!"

Natsu sniffed the air again, his expression growing serious. "Hey, Calvin. You didn't happen to see a big dragon around here, did you? There's this really strong smell of dragon magic, and it's making my nose itch."

Calvin briefly glanced at the spatial pocket in his coat where the massive chimera lacrima rested. The crystal contained Acnologia's essence pattern. Of course Natsu could smell it.

"I encountered a dragon construct," Calvin said carefully. "Destroyed it two days ago. Not a real dragon."

Natsu's eyes widened. "You fought a dragon?! Even a fake one?! That's so cool! Lucy, did you hear that?"

"I heard," Lucy said, studying Calvin with obvious wariness. "That's... impressive. And kind of terrifying."

"It was necessary," Calvin said. Then, still playing dumb: "What's a Fairy Tail?"

All three of them stared at him.

"You don't know Fairy Tail?!" Happy gasped. "It's only the most famous guild in Fiore!"

"I'm new to the area," Calvin said. Which was technically true.

Natsu's grin returned. "Then you should totally join! We're the best guild around! We take on awesome quests and fight strong opponents and—"

"Natsu," Lucy interrupted. "Maybe we should focus on finding Macao first?"

"Oh, right!" Natsu turned back to Calvin. "Hey, you've been in this forest for a while, right? Have you seen a middle-aged guy with brown hair? He was supposed to be hunting Vulcans."

Calvin thought back to his experiments with the Gorian corpses. "I encountered Forest Vulcans a week ago. Killed a few of them. Haven't seen any humans except you three."

"Damn," Natsu muttered. "His scent goes up toward the mountains. We should keep following it."

"I was heading that way anyway," Calvin said. "I'll come with you."

It wasn't altruism. He was curious about Natsu's abilities, wanted to observe how Fairy Tail mages operated in real 3D, and figured accompanying them was easier than explaining why he needed to reach the mountains alone.

Also, Lucy kept staring at his coat with obvious interest, and he wanted to know why.

"Really?! Awesome!" Natsu pumped his fist. "Let's go! Race you to the top, Calvin!"

He took off running before Calvin could respond.

Happy flew after him. "Wait for us!"

Lucy sighed. "Sorry about him. He's always like this." She started walking, then glanced at Calvin. "That coat really is incredible though. Did you make it yourself?"

"Yes."

"It's made from dragon scales, isn't it? It feels special, like Natsu's dragon slaying magic. And that gun... is that made from magical materials too?"

Could she perhaps sense the budding life within his creations? Feasible, given she was a celestial spirit mage.

Calvin showed Ivory. "Bull antler and bone. It converts my magic into ethernano beams."

Lucy's eyes widened. "That's... that's really advanced magic crafting. Are you a Holder mage?"

"I don't know the classification system yet."

"Oh." Lucy seemed to recalibrate her approach. "Well, Holder mages use external objects to channel magic. Like Celestial Spirit mages—that's me—or wizards who use magical weapons. Caster mages generate magic internally, like Natsu with his fire."

Calvin absorbed this information. "I create things that use magic. Does that make me a Holder mage?"

"Probably? Though creating magical items is usually a specialized skill. Most mages can't do it at all." She paused. "How long have you been a mage?"

"Two weeks."

Lucy nearly tripped. "Two weeks?! And you can already make dragon-scale armor and magical weapons?!"

"I'm a fast learner," Calvin said simply.

Which was true. Fifty thousand years of analyzing patterns in the void had given him processing capabilities that probably qualified as superhuman, even before factoring in his neurodivergent brain's natural aptitude for systemization.

They walked in silence for a few minutes, following the river upstream. Natsu's distant shouting echoed through the trees ahead of them.

Finally, Lucy asked: "So... are you really thinking about joining Fairy Tail?"

Calvin considered the question. He needed allies. Information. A place to experiment without drawing attention from dark wizards who could create fake Acnologias. Fairy Tail was chaotic, according to his memories, but also protective of its members.

"Yes," he said. "If they'll have me."

Lucy smiled. "If you helped us find Macao, I'm sure Master Makarov would be happy to accept you. Fairy Tail's always looking for strong mages."

Strong. Calvin didn't feel strong. He felt like someone barely keeping ahead of problems he didn't fully understand.

But he was learning.

And maybe, with a guild backing him, he'd have time to learn properly.

They continued upstream, toward the mountains, toward Macao, and toward whatever came next.

Calvin's coat pulsed contentedly against his shoulders.

Ivory hummed with stored power.

And the Chimeral lacrima containing the Tiger's soul fragment rested safely in his spatial pocket, waiting.

He was making progress.

Slowly, painfully, but progress nonetheless.
