Chapter 10 - Welcome to My World

The calm didn't last.

It never did.

By noon—

Everything changed again.

"Elena."

She looked up from the couch, slightly startled.

Adrian stood near the entrance, already dressed, already prepared—like he had been waiting for this moment all day.

"We're leaving."

No explanation.

No warning.

"Where?" she asked.

"Work."

Her brows pulled together.

"Your work?"

"Yes."

A pause.

"And now," he added…

"You're part of it."

Her stomach dropped.

The building looked even bigger during the day.

Blackwood Corporation.

Last time—

She had walked in as nothing.

Today—

She walked in as his wife.

The difference should have felt powerful.

It didn't.

It felt heavier.

More dangerous.

The moment they entered—

Everything shifted.

People stopped.

Subtly.

Carefully.

But noticeably.

Eyes followed.

Whispers started.

"Is that her?"

"She's actually here…"

"She looks different in daylight."

Elena kept walking.

Head straight.

Steps steady.

Because if she hesitated—

Even for a second—

They would see it.

Weakness.

And this world—

Didn't forgive weakness.

The elevator ride was silent.

Again.

But this time—

It felt like preparation.

Not tension.

"You'll stay beside me," Adrian said.

"I figured."

"You won't speak unless necessary."

"That seems to be a pattern."

His gaze flickered toward her.

"You're learning."

The doors opened.

And suddenly—

Everything became sharper.

A large conference room.

Glass walls.

Long table.

Men and women in expensive suits.

All of them—

Powerful.

All of them—

Watching.

"Mr. Blackwood."

They stood as he entered.

Respect.

Authority.

Control.

It surrounded him effortlessly.

And for the first time—

Elena saw it clearly.

This wasn't just a man.

This was power.

"This is Elena Carter."

His voice cut through the room.

Calm.

Final.

"My wife."

The word landed.

Heavy.

Unavoidable.

All eyes turned to her.

Sharp.

Judging.

Curious.

She didn't flinch.

Not this time.

"Take a seat."

They sat.

Elena stayed beside him.

Exactly where he told her to be.

But this time—

It didn't feel like control.

It felt like positioning.

The meeting started.

Numbers.

Deals.

Discussions.

Most of it went over her head.

But not everything.

Because slowly—

Patterns started forming.

Power.

Leverage.

Control.

Just like him.

"She's not qualified to be here."

The voice cut through everything.

Sharp.

Unwelcome.

Elena's eyes lifted.

A man across the table.

Older.

Confident.

Unimpressed.

"She doesn't need to be," Adrian replied.

"That's not how this works."

"No," Adrian said calmly.

"That's exactly how this works."

Silence.

Tension filled the room instantly.

"This is a business, not a personal playground," the man continued.

Elena felt it—

The shift.

This wasn't about her.

Not really.

This was about him.

And using her—

To challenge him.

Adrian leaned back slightly.

Relaxed.

Too relaxed.

"And yet," he said quietly…

"You're still here."

The words landed.

Hard.

The man's expression tightened.

"This is a mistake."

Adrian's gaze darkened slightly.

"No," he replied.

"This is a decision."

Silence.

Heavy.

Uncomfortable.

Because everyone in that room understood something—

This wasn't a discussion.

This was dominance.

The meeting continued.

But the tension never left.

It stayed.

Lingering.

Waiting.

When it ended—

People left quickly.

Quietly.

No one wanted to stay in that pressure.

Except one.

The same man.

He stood.

Looking directly at Elena.

Then—

At Adrian.

"You're letting emotions interfere."

Adrian didn't move.

"I don't have emotions."

The answer was instant.

Cold.

Absolute.

The man scoffed.

"Everyone does."

A pause.

"Even you."

For a moment—

Something flickered in Adrian's eyes.

Gone before it could be understood.

"Leave," he said.

And the man did.

Because no one—

Stayed when Adrian Blackwood said that word.

The door closed.

Silence returned.

Elena exhaled slowly.

"That was… intense."

"That was normal."

She blinked.

"Normal?"

His gaze shifted to her.

"You'll get used to it."

"I'm not sure I want to."

A pause.

"You don't have a choice."

Of course she didn't.

"You could've told me," she said.

"About what?"

"That it would be like that."

His expression didn't change.

"It will get worse."

Her breath caught slightly.

"Worse?"

"Yes."

Simple.

Unavoidable.

"Why?" she asked.

His gaze held hers.

"Because now—"

A pause.

"They know you matter."

Her chest tightened.

"And that's dangerous."

Silence.

Because she understood.

Not completely.

But enough.

This wasn't just a contract anymore.

This wasn't just a marriage.

This was a war.

And somehow—

She had become part of it.

As they walked out—

Elena felt it.

Eyes again.

Watching.

Calculating.

But this time—

It felt different.

Because she wasn't just being judged.

She was being targeted.

And for the first time—

She realized something terrifying.

The biggest danger in Adrian Blackwood's world—

Wasn't him.

It was everyone else.
