Chapter 101 - Chapter 101 : Tomorrow

The first thing Haruto heard was the sound of a page turning.

A soft, familiar whisper.

For a brief, terrifying moment, he refused to open his eyes.

He had dreamed of finding Sakura too many times.

In every dream, they met.

In every dream, they talked.

And in every dream...

He woke up alone.

His fingers slowly tightened around the blanket.

"...Please..."

He wasn't even sure who he was speaking to.

The gods.

Fate.

The world.

Anyone.

"...Just this once."

He opened his eyes.

Morning sunlight spilled gently through the inn's window.

A chair sat beside it.

And in that chair...

Sakura quietly read a book.

She wore the same simple clothes from yesterday, one leg tucked beneath the other as she turned another page.

She sensed him staring.

Without looking up, she smiled.

"Good morning."

Haruto blinked.

Then blinked again.

"...You're still here."

Sakura finally lifted her eyes from the book.

"I was planning to be."

He covered his face with one hand before laughing quietly to himself.

"I thought I'd wake up."

"And?"

"And yesterday would've disappeared."

She closed her book.

"I thought the same thing."

Haruto sat up.

"You did?"

She nodded.

"I woke up three times last night."

He looked surprised.

"You couldn't sleep?"

"I could."

She smiled sheepishly.

"I just... kept checking if you were still there."

Haruto stared.

Then slowly raised his hand.

"...Me too."

For a second, they simply looked at one another.

Then they both laughed.

Not loudly.

Not dramatically.

Just the quiet laughter of two people realizing they had shared the exact same fear.

Years of searching had ended.

Neither of them quite knew how to trust that happiness had finally arrived.

---

A knock sounded on the door.

"Breakfast's almost ready!" the innkeeper called cheerfully. "Don't make me come drag you downstairs!"

Haruto rubbed the back of his neck.

"I think she knows."

Sakura tilted her head.

"Knows what?"

"That we're... together."

She smiled.

"I think everyone does."

Haruto looked toward the window.

"...Were we that obvious?"

"You cried."

"You cried too."

"...Fair."

---

The dining room buzzed with conversation.

Travelers discussed weather, road conditions and exaggerated tales from distant villages.

The smell of fresh bread filled the room.

Haruto and Sakura sat beside one another at a corner table.

The innkeeper soon arrived carrying two bowls of warm vegetable soup.

Haruto stared at it.

Sakura noticed.

"...What?"

He looked at her.

"Do you remember the first soup we made together?"

She immediately covered her face.

"No."

"I do."

"It never happened."

"I'm pretty sure the pot dissolved."

"It did not."

"The spoon stood upright."

"It was thick."

"It was salt."

"It was one mistake!"

Haruto laughed.

"It was unforgettable."

"You still ate it."

"I was afraid you'd cry if I didn't."

She narrowed her eyes.

"So you were lying when you said it was delicious?"

"I said it had... character."

She gently kicked his foot beneath the table.

"You deserved that."

"I absolutely did."

Despite the conversation had felt like déjà vu

The innkeeper looked between them with an amused smile.

"You two remind me of my husband and I when we were younger."

Haruto smiled.

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"You should."

She placed fresh bread onto the table.

"The happiest couples are the ones who never run out of things to tease each other about."

She walked away before either of them could respond.

Sakura quietly broke a piece of bread.

"...I like her."

"So do I."

---

After breakfast, neither suggested leaving Wayrest.

Neither suggested chasing rumors.

Neither mentioned forgotten cities.

Or ancient mysteries.

Instead...

They simply walked.

The streets bustled with ordinary life.

Children raced through the marketplace carrying wooden toys.

A blacksmith argued with a customer over the price of horseshoes.

An old woman carefully arranged flowers outside her shop.

Haruto slowed his pace.

"I forgot places like this existed."

Sakura looked around.

"So did I."

For years...

Every town had been another clue.

Another stop.

Another place to ask questions before moving on.

Now...

Wayrest was simply...

A place.

A way to rest.

A town full of people living ordinary lives.

It felt strangely wonderful.

They wandered into a small bookstore.

The scent of old paper immediately made Sakura smile.

Haruto noticed.

"I've missed that face."

"What face?"

"The one you make around books."

She looked genuinely confused.

"I make a face?"

"You do."

"What kind of face?"

"...A happy one."

She looked away, embarrassed.

"I don't."

"You really do."

The elderly bookseller chuckled from behind the counter.

"My wife used to smile exactly like that."

Sakura's expression softened.

"Did she enjoy reading?"

"More than anything."

He gently dusted a worn novel.

"Whenever she couldn't decide what to buy..."

He smiled to himself.

"...I'd tell her to buy all of them."

Haruto nodded thoughtfully.

"That's dangerous advice."

"It certainly was."

The old man laughed.

"My money pouch never recovered."

Sakura quietly chose a single novel.

As Haruto paid for it, she looked at him.

"You didn't have to."

"I wanted to."

"You already bought me one years ago."

"I know."

"I still have it."

Haruto blinked.

"You do?"

"It survived."

She smiled gently.

"So I wasn't going to leave it behind."

His chest tightened.

Not from sadness.

From gratitude.

Some things...

Even another world couldn't take away.

---

By afternoon, they found themselves sitting beside the river that flowed through Wayrest.

The current shimmered beneath the sunlight.

Several children skipped stones across the water.

Haruto leaned back against the grass.

"So..."

Sakura looked at him.

"So."

"...What do married people actually do?"

She laughed.

"We've been married before."

"Not like this."

He looked up at the sky.

"Before..."

"We had work."

"A home."

"Plans."

"Now we're in another world."

"...With absolutely no idea what comes next."

Sakura thought quietly.

Then answered.

"I think..."

She reached over and gently took his hand.

"...you get to choose."

She leaned closer to his shoulder.

"...as my husband."

Haruto looked down at their hands.

No destiny.

No prophecy.

No desperate chase.

Just a simple choice.

He smiled.

"I like that."

"So do I."

They remained there until the afternoon breeze turned cool.

No words were needed.

The silence between them had never felt so full.

---

That evening, they returned to the inn.

Haruto unpacked his satchel.

From its deepest pocket, he carefully removed the small blue stone.

He had carried it across deserts.

Through forests.

Across mountains.

Never once letting it out of his sight.

Sakura instinctively touched the empty silver pendant resting against her chest.

"The Archivist said it was waiting."

Haruto nodded.

"I think... it's waited long enough."

Very carefully, he placed the blue stone into the pendant.

It fit perfectly.

Neither too tight.

Nor too loose.

As if it had always belonged there.

For a long moment...

Nothing happened.

Haruto laughed awkwardly.

"I guess we expected too much."

"Maybe."

Then...

A faint warmth spread through Sakura's fingertips.

She looked down.

The blue stone glowed softly.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then the light disappeared.

The room fell silent.

Haruto looked at Sakura.

"...Did you see that?"

She slowly nodded.

"I did."

Neither understood its meaning.

Neither tried to guess.

For once...

They didn't need answers immediately.

Whatever the pendant had awakened...

It could wait until tomorrow.

Tonight, they simply sat beside the window together.

Watching the lanterns of Wayrest sway gently in the evening breeze.

Not as two people searching for one another.

But as two people finally beginning the life they had fought so hard to reclaim.
