Chapter 88 - Chapter 87 : The Language of Marks

Sakura didn't move for a long time.

The sketchbook stayed open in her lap.

Pages fluttered slightly whenever the wind slipped through the dunes, but she kept it steady.

Careful.

Almost protective.

Abel sat a short distance away, watching the horizon as if it might suddenly explain itself.

It didn't.

The Glass Dunes remained the same confusing field of shifting light and mirrored sand.

Eventually, Sakura spoke.

"This isn't random."

Abel nodded.

"No."

A pause.

"You already figured that out."

Sakura gave a small, tired laugh.

"I'm catching up."

That was an understatement.

She turned another page, even though she already knew what it would show.

Another map fragment.

Another direction.

Another piece of Haruto's thought process, frozen in ink.

It didn't feel like reading anymore.

It felt like decoding him.

Not his location.

His mind.

Abel leaned closer slightly.

"He never stayed in one place long."

"I know."

Sakura's voice softened.

"I can tell."

The boy tilted his head.

"How?"

She hesitated.

Then tapped a small corner of the page.

"Because this isn't complete."

Abel frowned.

"It is complete."

"No."

Sakura shook her head.

"He leaves gaps."

The boy blinked.

Sakura pointed again.

"Here. This path doesn't connect properly unless you already know what he saw."

She traced a curve in the drawn route.

"He's not drawing for strangers."

A pause.

"He's drawing for someone who already understands him."

Abel went quiet.

For once, he didn't immediately respond with analysis or correction.

That alone made the moment feel heavier.

The wind shifted again.

Sand whispered across stone.

Above them, the sky was beginning its slow descent into evening.

Sakura closed the sketchbook carefully.

Not because she was done with it.

Because she didn't trust herself to keep staring.

"Abel."

The boy looked up.

"Did he ever talk about… me?"

The question came out quieter than she intended.

Abel hesitated.

For the first time, uncertainty crossed his face.

"…not directly."

Sakura's heart tightened slightly.

"But?"

The boy adjusted his glasses.

"He didn't need to."

Silence.

That answer hurt more than she expected.

Abel continued.

"He kept referring to someone he called 'the constant.'"

Sakura blinked.

"The constant?"

"Yes."

The boy nodded slowly.

"Something that doesn't change even when everything else does."

Sakura lowered her gaze.

Haruto had always been like that.

He'd called her stubborn before.

Unmoving.

Reliable.

Annoyingly consistent.

Apparently he had upgraded the description.

"He also called plenty of other names."

"Like what?"

"The loud."

"The Salty Cook."

Abel continued.

"Smiles that aches the heart.'

Sakura unconsciously small smiled.

"He also said The World's Biggest Boo..."

"Okay that's enough,I get it."

Abel picked up a small stone from the ground and rolled it between his fingers.

"He said even if he ever lost track of everything else, he would still look for her."

Sakura exhaled slowly.

"That sounds like him."

Abel glanced at her.

"Do you think he meant you?"

The question landed quietly.

Not sharp.

Not dramatic.

Just direct.

Sakura didn't answer immediately.

Because she already knew.

Yes.

But saying it out loud made it heavier.

So she simply nodded.

Abel looked away again.

"…then you're further inside his system than I thought."

Sakura gave a faint smile.

"That sounds dangerous."

"It is."

The boy said it so casually that it almost made her laugh.

The sun dipped lower.

The Glass Dunes began to glow.

Light fractured across the sand, turning everything into shifting reflections.

It felt like walking through broken mirrors.

Sakura stood slowly.

Abel followed her movement.

"You're leaving."

She nodded.

"Yes."

"Why now?"

Sakura looked toward the eastern horizon.

Because staying here wouldn't bring her any closer.

Because the trail didn't end here.

Because Haruto didn't stop moving.

And neither could she.

"Because I understand it now."

Abel tilted his head.

"The destination?"

Sakura shook her head.

"Him."

A pause.

"He's not waiting in one place."

She tightened the strap of her bag.

"He's narrowing the distance."

Abel processed that quietly.

Then nodded once.

"That makes sense."

Sakura smiled slightly.

Only a scholar would find that sentence normal.

She turned toward the dunes.

The path forward wasn't marked clearly anymore.

It didn't need to be.

Not after this.

The sketchbook rested safely in her hands for a final moment.

Then she tucked it into her bag.

Carefully.

Like something alive.

Abel stood as well.

"What now?"

Sakura looked east.

Toward the direction all the clues agreed on.

Toward the direction Haruto had been refining for months.

"Now we follow his trails."

The wind rose slightly.

The Glass Dunes shimmered under fading sunlight.

And for the first time, the journey didn't feel like chasing anymore.

It felt like convergence.
