Chapter 77 - Chapter 76 : Beyond the Veil

Sakura stared at the page.

Subject: Nishibi Haruto

Seeing his name written there felt strange.

Real.

For years, Haruto had existed only in her memories.

In old dreams.

In quiet moments when she found herself thinking about the life they had lost.

Now his name sat inside an official record.

Ink on paper.

A possibility acknowledged by someone other than herself.

"If he exists, then history has repeated itself in a new way."

Sakura looked up.

"What does that mean?"

The Archivist closed the book.

For a moment, she seemed to debate whether to answer.

Then she sighed.

"The phrase is less dramatic than it sounds."

Rowan looked disappointed.

"It sounded pretty dramatic."

"It usually does."

The Archivist ignored him.

"As far as our records show, people from beyond arrive alone."

Sakura nodded.

She remembered that conversation.

"The exception being Haruto."

"If he truly arrived."

The Archivist corrected gently.

"If."

Sakura didn't like that word.

Unfortunately, it was an honest one.

The silver-haired woman stood and walked toward the window.

Morning sunlight reflected across the waters surrounding Crown Isle.

Ships crossed the strait below.

The city stretched endlessly in every direction.

"A pair changes things."

Sakura frowned.

"Why?"

The Archivist was quiet for a moment.

Then answered.

"Because stories leave marks."

Neither Sakura nor Rowan understood.

The woman continued anyway.

"Most arrivals disappear into history."

"Some become scholars."

"Some become rulers."

"Some live ordinary lives."

She glanced toward the shelves surrounding them.

"The world adapts."

"The story continues."

Sakura felt as though she was listening to only half a conversation.

The Archivist noticed.

"You are wondering what any of this means."

"Yes."

"Reasonable."

At least someone acknowledged it.

The woman returned to her desk.

"Imagine dropping a stone into water."

Sakura nodded.

"One stone creates ripples."

The Archivist picked up a pen.

"Now imagine dropping two stones."

The pen tapped the desk twice.

"They create patterns."

The room grew quiet.

Slowly, Sakura began to understand.

Not completely.

But enough.

"If Haruto arrived here too..."

"Then your stories never truly separated."

The Archivist finished.

Sakura lowered her gaze.

For some reason, those words made her chest tighten.

Not from sadness.

Not from fear.

Something else.

Something warmer.

Rowan suddenly raised a hand.

The Archivist stared at him.

"You are not in school."

"I know."

"Then stop doing that."

"Fine."

He lowered his hand.

Then immediately asked anyway.

"If Haruto exists, why haven't we found records of him?"

A good question.

The Archivist nodded slightly.

"A very good question."

The woman opened a nearby drawer.

Removing several folded documents.

She spread them across the desk.

Travel records.

Trade reports.

Census lists.

Old journals.

The kind of paperwork that made scholars happy and everyone else sleepy.

The Archivist pointed at them.

"Because traces exist."

Sakura blinked.

"What?"

The woman selected one page.

A merchant's journal.

"The journal mentions an artist traveling through the Northern Expanse."

Another page.

"A village record mentions a stranger carrying a sketchbook."

Another.

"A caravan report describes someone drawing landmarks instead of recording them."

Sakura's heart skipped.

The details were small.

Individually meaningless.

Yet together...

Together they formed a pattern.

Rowan leaned forward.

"You think they're the same person."

"I think they might be."

The Archivist corrected.

Again.

Always precise.

Always careful.

Sakura couldn't decide whether that was reassuring or frustrating.

Probably both.

The silver-haired woman gathered the papers.

"There is still not enough evidence."

"No."

Sakura agreed.

There wasn't.

Not yet.

But for the first time, the search felt real.

Not impossible.

Not hopeless.

Real.

The Archivist seemed to reach the same conclusion.

Because she walked toward a shelf and removed a rolled map.

Then handed it to Sakura.

"This is a copy."

Sakura accepted it.

"What is it?"

"The Northern Expanse."

Her eyes widened slightly.

The desert.

Haruto's desert.

The place every clue seemed to point toward.

The Archivist folded her hands.

"If you intend to search for answers..."

Her gaze shifted toward the map.

"...that is where I would begin."

The room became silent.

Sakura looked down at the map.

Then at the velvet pouch inside her bag.

Then at the sketch.

Years.

She had spent years wandering without direction.

Following rumors.

Following guesses.

Following hope.

Now, for the first time—

she had a destination.

The realization was both exciting and terrifying.

Rowan broke the silence.

"When are you leaving?"

Sakura blinked.

"I haven't decided."

"Tomorrow."

"What?"

"Definitely tomorrow."

The cartographer nodded confidently.

"You're making the face."

"What face?"

"The adventure face."

"I have an adventure face?"

"Absolutely."

Sakura looked toward the Archivist.

The woman considered this.

Then nodded.

"He's right."

That was somehow worse.

The room fell quiet once more.

But this time, it felt different.

Not uncertain.

Not uneasy.

Focused.

Like the beginning of a journey.

And somewhere beyond Aurelis.

Beyond forests.

Beyond mountains.

Beyond countless miles of desert.

A man continued moving forward.

Unaware that, for the first time in years—

someone finally had a trail worth following.
