Chapter 19 - The Third Loop (Part I)

The fortress had seen assassins.

Kings. Heroes. Even dragons.

But...Never... This.

The report spread through the halls faster than wildfire.

"No gates opened."

"No teleportation circle activated."

"No barrier was broken."

"He was simply... there."

No one could explain it. No one wanted to try. Rin walked beside Kaelith through the eastern corridor.

Neither spoke. The silence between them wasn't uncomfortable. It was focused.

Every intersection held soldiers. Every balcony housed archers.

Even the fortress servants had disappeared from the hallways. The entire stronghold felt as though it had stopped breathing.

Rin glanced sideways.

"...You're expecting a fight."

"I am."

"You think he's dangerous?"

"I think..."

Kaelith's eyes remained fixed ahead.

"...someone who ignores the fortress barriers should never be underestimated."

"...Fair."

A few more steps.

"...General?"

"Yes?"

"...If things go badly..."

Kaelith answered before Rin could finish.

"They won't."

"...You don't even know what I was going to ask."

"I do."

"..."

"...You were going to tell me not to protect you first."

Rin blinked.

"...Was I that obvious?"

"You usually are."

"...That's mildly insulting."

"It wasn't intended to be."

"It still succeeded."

For the briefest moment... The corner of Kaelith's mouth moved.

Almost. Not quite. Rin pointed immediately.

"I saw that."

"Saw what?"

"That almost-smile."

"...I don't know what you mean."

"You absolutely do."

"I don't."

"...Liar."

"I have been accused of worse."

Despite everything... Rin laughed. The tension eased. Only slightly. Enough to breathe again.

The council chamber stood ahead. Its massive oak doors remained shut. Eight elite guards surrounded the entrance.

Not ordinary soldiers. Veterans. Each carried enchanted weapons. Each looked nervous. One of them bowed.

"General."

"Status?"

"He hasn't moved. He hasn't spoken."

The guard hesitated.

"...Except once."

Kaelith frowned.

"What did he say?"

The guard swallowed.

"He asked..."

His eyes shifted toward Rin.

"...whether the programmer had arrived yet."

Silence. Rin felt his heartbeat stumble. Kaelith noticed.

His expression hardened almost imperceptibly.

"You know this title."

It wasn't a question.

"...Yes."

Not the whole truth. Just enough. Kaelith gave a single nod. He didn't press further.

Instead, he stepped in front of the doors. His hand rested on the hilt of his sword.

"Stay behind me."

Rin opened his mouth.

"I can—"

"Behind me."

The tone wasn't harsh. It was absolute. For some reason... Rin obeyed without arguing.

The guards pushed the heavy doors open. The chamber was silent. Morning light spilled through the tall windows.

Maps still covered the central table. No one sat. Everyone stood. Watching. Waiting.

Selara's spear was already aimed forward.

Vorak blocked the rear exit like a living fortress.

Lucien maintained a glowing circle of holy light.

Elder Veyron whispered ancient runes beneath his breath.

And in the center of the room...

Sat a stranger.

Young. Perhaps twenty-five. Dark hair. Grey eyes.

Simple traveling clothes completely unsuited to the mountain cold.

No weapons. No armor. No fear.

He sat comfortably in one of the council chairs. As though he had every right to be there.

The moment Rin entered... The stranger looked up. Their eyes met. He smiled.

"...There you are."

Rin stopped.

"...Do I know you?"

The stranger tilted his head.

"Not yet."

The answer shouldn't have been frightening. Somehow... It was. A blue screen exploded into existence beside Rin.

Unlike before... It appeared instantly. Almost desperately.

The stranger's eyes drifted toward the floating screen. He sighed.

"...You're still using that?"

Rin froze.

"...You...can see it?"

The stranger looked genuinely surprised.

"It never told you?"

Silence.

"It..."

He frowned slightly.

"...still hides things."

The System flickered violently.

The stranger chuckled.

"Oh. So you can hear me."

The blue interface shook. Letters scrambled across the screen.

COMMUNICATION BLOCKED

"...Still trying."

The stranger sounded almost disappointed.

"You've had better days."

The System's blue frame cracked. Thin black fractures spread across its surface.

One.

Then two.

Then dozens.

CRITICAL ERROR

OBSERVER-CLASS ENTITY IDENTIFIED

Every word turned crimson. The chamber temperature dropped. Frost crept across the stone floor. Lucien immediately noticed.

"My barrier...It is weakening."

Selara tightened her grip.

"General."

"I know."

Kaelith had already drawn his sword. The blade reflected pale silver light. He stepped forward. Just enough to stand directly between Rin... And the stranger.

Again. Instinct. Not strategy. Not an order. Simply...instinct.

The stranger watched him with quiet amusement.

"...Every time."

Kaelith's voice remained calm.

"You know me."

"I know every version of you."

Nobody breathed. Vorak frowned.

"...Every version?"

The stranger nodded.

"I've watched him die."

Silence.

"I've watched him win."

Another pause.

"I've watched him lose."

His smile disappeared.

"I've watched him become something even he would fear."

Kaelith didn't react. Only tightened his grip.

"...Who are you?"

The stranger looked past the sword. Past Kaelith. Straight at Rin.

"We don't have much time."

Rin felt every instinct screaming at him to leave. Instead... He took one careful step forward.

Kaelith immediately raised an arm, stopping him. Without looking away from the stranger. Rin didn't argue.

"...Answer him."

The stranger closed his eyes for a moment. As if choosing between a thousand possible truths. When he opened them again...

The warmth had vanished. Only exhaustion remained.

"I've had many names. Most of them aren't mine anymore."

He laughed quietly.

"But I suppose...you deserve the first one."

His gaze never left Rin.

"I'm the one..."

He paused.

"...who failed to save you."
