Chapter 30
Status Effect Parrying.
In our circles, we used to call it Status Effect Parrying for short.
It was a Bug that utilized a judgment error occurring in-game.
The inflicted status effect was judged as an attack.
By finely timing a Parrying based on this, you could strip the status effect from the character.
'It was a method I frequently used in my past life.'
It was quite lucrative.
Because by utilizing this Bug, you could save on the cost of Potions.
Most problems could be solved with a simple click of Parrying.
'Of course... there were a few status effects that couldn't be resolved with Parrying.'
Still, it worked more than half the time.
It drastically reduced the exorbitant Potion costs spent on characters.
I still remember the community's reaction back then.
Everyone went totally crazy.
[Title: A Bug I found today]
[Author: PlaysGameToFindBugs]
This is a Bug I discovered today.
I'll just name the Bug [Status Effect Parrying].
I've attached a recording at the bottom of the post.
[HereComesMyPorn]
-> You brought something amazing again LOL
-> How do you even find these things?
-> PlaysGameToFindBugs) I found it while playing character baseball with Parrying.
-> Fuck LOL
-> Playing baseball with Parrying, my ass LOL
-> What the hell does this guy even do alone in the game LOL
-> I don't even have a clue what character Parrying baseball is haha
-> But the fact that I don't have a clue is fucking hilarious LOL
[BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder! BugFinder!]
-> He is a God!
[This one is really useful though? If we use it well, we won't even need to use Potions.]
-> nope you still gotta use Potions. There are quite a few where the Bug doesn't work.
-> Still, Potion costs will drop way more than before.
Periodically uploading my Bug finding.
For something I posted as a hobby, it was a highly loved piece of content.
[Title: Review of using Status Effect Parrying]
[Author: OO(110.12)]
The Bug that BugFinder brought us
He found something crazy again this time LOL
I was in the middle of clearing Purgatory 75th Floor, and I ran out of Potions while fighting the Master.
Veterans would know, but the 75th Floor Master is a Debuff-centric boss, right?
So I was thinking if I had to do a retry
When suddenly I remembered BugFinder's post from yesterday
(Recording attached)
The controls were harder than I thought, but thanks to that, I cleared the 75th Floor easily haha
[Wow, that's amazing LOL]
-> To a Newbie's eyes, I have no clue how you even control that.
-> The controls for this are actually quite difficult.
[Every time you hit a Parrying, one allied character's status effect disappears.]
-> Blindness, Fear, Bleeding, Suppression...
-> Is the reason it removes one per Parrying because they are all judged as individual attacks?
-> yep because the principle of Status Effect Parrying is receiving the status effect as an attack judgment.
-> Original Parrying only deflects one attack at a time anyway. It's just like that.
[But it looks like we'll have to practice this a lot]
-> yep that is fucking hard
-> BugFinder just makes it look fucking easy, if the timing is even a little off, it doesn't activate.
-> To use it in real combat, you'll need to get used to it.
[Anyway, thanks for finding a Bug like this]
-> For real it's lucrative
-> I spent way too much on Potions last month, but at least I can save a bit now.
'Honestly... it was a Bug I uploaded thinking it would be blocked soon.'
When I first discovered that Bug, I thought it would be fixed immediately.
Well, from the game company's perspective, it was a fatal Bug.
A Bug that reduces the Users' Potion purchases....
The customers were closing their wallets, there's no way they could stand not fixing it.
'It's right to fix it, really.'
Neugeume.
(Meaning Ranne & Grandia Academy: The Märchen)
It was a game that had tolerated countless Bugs so far, but I thought they wouldn't overlook this one.
And I also thought that was the right thing to do.
'However....'
In the next month's patch Notebook, there was no mention of the Bug anywhere.
Far from a fix, they didn't even leave an advance notice for a fix.
There was even a phrase written at the very end.
[Shout out to PlaysGameToFindBugs.]
Seeing that, I thought these guys were truly crazy bastards.
An official post shouting out a User who threatens their cash cow....
Thanks to that, their actions remained a legend, and they secured the image of an extremely pleasant, favorable GOAT game company.
'Anyway, it's a relief.'
If the Bug had been fixed back then, the day would never have come for me to use it in reality like this.
I look down at the body heat held in my arms.
A young boy who seemed to be just over 10 years old.
Just a moment ago, he had been consumed by [Ghoulification] but....
'This actually works.'
He was normalized by my Status Effect Parrying.
He regained his original appearance without a single scar left on his body.
'I was a little scared.'
Honestly, I was half-in-doubt too.
Because it wasn't like I knew everything and had confidence in every action.
Well... I heard wailing from all over, so it was an attempt I threw out with a whatever happens happens attitude.
'I've never even tried something like this in-game.'
Usually, when you say a status effect, it's a Debuff type like [Blindness] or [Bleeding].
'I knew that [Ghoulification] was originally one of the status effects, but... to think Status Effect Parrying would apply to it.'
Because there were never any situations in-game where you had to use Parrying against a Ghoul.
Plus, Status Effect Parrying wasn't successful every single time....
Divine Pressure, Instant Kill, Baptism, etc.
In the case of high-tier status effects, Status Effect Parrying didn't work.
If there was a difference from normal status effects, it would be that they were ones that only activated in special cases.
It was the accepted theory in the community that the developers had paid special attention to prevent any abnormalities because of that.
'Honestly... I was worried that [Ghoulification] might be that kind of type too.'
Fortunately, Ghoulification seemed to fall under the 'normal' category.
The card I threw with a whatever-happens-happens attitude returned as a jackpot at the gambling table.
I carefully set the child down.
"Son... our, ah, my, my Son...!"
"Huh? It's Mom!"
Pitter-patter-.
Slipping out of my arms, the child threw himself into his mother's embrace.
The woman hugged that touching body heat and sobbed bitterly.
Was it that she couldn't believe this reality?
"Ah... Jerry, Jerian...."
"Mom, why are you crying...?"
She hugged him again and again, pressing their faces and foreheads together....
It tickled my heart; it was a truly warm scene of maternal love.
I smiled beside them.
Feeling pleased, I tilted my head.
"Kid, are you uncomfortable anywhere?"
"Yes...? About what?"
"I'm asking if your body hurts or anything like that."
"I'm fine, though? It doesn't hurt... but more importantly, Mom is crying. A lot."
"Don't worry. It's because she's so happy. You are a child who receives a lot of love."
"Yes! I love my Mom the most in the world!"
"How commendable. Give your Mom a big hug."
I reached out and gently ruffled his hair.
The child's eyes were simply sparkling.
There wasn't a single scar visible on his body.
'Is that so....'
The reaction of stripping away the Ghoulification.
Basically, Vampires and Ghouls possess regenerative abilities.
They continuously heal their wounds, under the assumption that they are constantly supplied with blood.
Of course, if the degree of damage crosses a certain line, even that becomes useless, but....
'His bodily wounds healed because he went through Ghoulification. Since I fed him Status Effect Parrying in that state, he returned to a clean appearance without a single scar.'
To think there was a way to utilize it like this.
I organized this new knowledge.
"Thank you... thank you, oh my goodness. Oh God...."
The woman muttered over and over.
She held her child tightly in her arms and wouldn't let go.
"Thank... sniff, you, hic...."
Her pronunciation was completely crushed, mixed with her wailing.
As if to say I understood everything, I patted the woman's back.
Her tears bloomed like an iris.
"Ugh, sniff...."
While listening to her thanks like that, a few people who had been watching the situation approached.
The first ones to speak were two people.
"Victo... ah, no. Vice Captain Garurik?"
"S-Sir Garurik...?"
Carmilla, Kantas.
The two of them stood there with their eyes wide open.
Carmilla's expression in particular was quite a sight.
"H-how...?"
How.
As a Vampire, Carmilla knew just how nonsensical the previous scene was.
"T-turning a Ghoul back into a Human? Such a record doesn't even exist in Vampire history! Even the True Ancestor, who supposedly disappeared in ancient times, couldn't perform such a miracle...."
"Haha, you seem quite surprised."
"How could I not be surprised!"
"That is true."
"How did you do it? Is it perhaps related to that bizarre power you always show?"
"Unfortunately, that's a trade secret."
"H-how could that be...!"
Carmilla froze as if she were in shock.
To tell her to calm down, I gently patted her head.
"Ahem."
I grabbed their attention with a few fake coughs.
The still-dazed Carmilla, and Kantas as well.
Behind them stood other people who had gathered at some point.
"W-what... what just happened?"
"A child who was definitely a Ghoul, returned to being a Human...?"
"Is that even possible? You can revert a Ghoul?"
"That makes no sense...."
"Really...?"
"Is it possible...?"
Those muttering voices were choked with tears.
Because they were the people who had been shedding tears in front of the pit just a moment ago.
"Everyone."
Their gazes focused on me.
Only.
Eyes looking solely at me.
""....""
Their eyes welled up with tears, seemingly filled with hope.
Tears formed, blurred their vision, flowed, and cleared up again.
Hot streaks were drawn across their cheeks several times like that.
As if asking for an answer right away, they wished for an answer to an unspoken question.
They were such pitiful things.
Thus, I understood their plea.
"Would you all help me?"
And,
I had no intention of betraying that plea.
"You all have to go back together."
The pit.
To the trampled lives and broken branches beneath it.
To you all who had to suffer and cry.
"Didn't I promise you? That I would get everyone back home safely."
May my Illusion be a blessing.
May this moment remain as an encounter with a miracle rather than a curse.
"Now, then."
The Orphanage.
Teacher.
Friends.
Burned down.
The salvation that I never had.
"Is there anyone who can catch a Ghoul and throw it over here?"
I made such a prayer.
