Chapter 13 - Chapter Thirteen: The Message She Wasn't Meant

The morning after their confrontation felt heavy.

Lila woke up with that strange emptiness in her chest - not heartbreak, not yet - just the weight of uncertainty.

She checked her phone.

No message from Adrian.

She told herself not to panic.

He said he would explain.

He said tomorrow.

Maybe he was waiting for the right moment.

At work, she tried to focus. Tried to write. Tried to be normal.

But her mind kept drifting.

Around noon, her colleague walked over.

"Lila, is that not your investor guy?"

She frowned slightly. "What?"

Her colleague turned her phone around.

It was a photo.

A recent one.

Adrian.

At what looked like a family event.

Standing beside an older woman - maybe his mother.

And next to him...

A woman.

Beautiful. Elegant. Well-dressed.

Standing very close.

Too close.

The caption read:

"So happy everything is finally coming together #Family #Celebration"

Her stomach dropped.

Her ears began to ring softly.

"Where did you see that?" Lila asked, her voice too calm.

"Online. Someone reposted it. Isn't that him?"

Lila forced a small smile. "Yes... that's him."

She handed the phone back slowly.

Her hands felt cold.

She went to the restroom and locked the door.

Then she pulled up the post herself.

She stared at the picture.

Zoomed in.

The woman's hand was lightly resting on Adrian's arm.

Familiar. Comfortable.

Not accidental.

Her chest tightened.

Her thoughts began racing.

Is this why he's distant?

Is this what he didn't want to explain?

Is she the reason?

Her breathing grew uneven.

But she refused to cry.

Not yet.

The worst part wasn't the photo.

It was the caption.

"Everything is finally coming together."

What did that mean?

Finally?

Had something been pending?

Had she walked into something unfinished?

Her phone buzzed.

Her heart jumped.

Adrian.

She stared at his name on the screen.

For a few seconds, she couldn't even move.

Then she answered.

"Hi," she said softly.

"Lila," he said, and his voice sounded... urgent.

"I was just about to call you," he added.

Of course you were.

She closed her eyes.

"I saw the photo," she said quietly.

Silence.

A sharp one.

"You saw it," he repeated.

"Yes."

Another pause.

Longer this time.

"It's not what you think," he said.

And somehow, that sentence hurt more than anything else.

Because it was the oldest sentence in the world.

The sentence people say when things are exactly what you think.

"Then tell me what it is," she said.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"That woman-" he started.

"Is she your fiancée?" Lila asked directly.

There.

She said it.

The question that had been choking her for the last five minutes.

On the other end of the line...

Silence.

And this time...

It wasn't confusion.

It wasn't searching for words.

It was hesitation.

And hesitation is loud.
