Chapter 261: Three-Way Struggle
The sudden development pulled all three sets of eyes in the same direction.
"Aizen-sama, that was..."
"Not a Shinigami's method."
The living world and Soul Society operated on fundamentally different principles. The rules here pushed against each other in almost every way.
Which meant that for a Shinigami operating in the living world, the baseline requirement was suppressing your own power to an extreme degree. That constraint applied to everyone, regardless of strength.
Both Aizen's group and Yamamoto's had made multiple trips to the living world over the years, hunting the fugitives or attempting to verify their whereabouts. Every time, they had come back empty-handed.
There was a simple reason for that. Moving in the living world as a Shinigami was inherently cumbersome, and the terrain was vast. As long as Hirako's group was actively hiding, exposure was almost impossible to force.
After enough failed attempts, continuing to try stopped making sense. Aizen and the others had gradually let their attention drift away from the living world, and with it, toward overlooking certain groups that called it home.
The Quincies.
"I think I've only ever seen them in Academy textbooks."
For Tosen, born after the Blood War and operating outside research fields, that unfamiliarity was perfectly normal. The educational system in the Seireitei had not given the Quincies much ongoing attention.
Aizen's expression, by contrast, had shifted into something more reflective. He was working through something.
Matsushita Yusuke caught the change in his peripheral attention and quietly looked away.
The finer details here weren't his to steer or explain. And based on everything that had gone well so far, he understood: as long as the broad direction stayed on track, the specifics would find their own way.
His thoughts kept moving while the scene in front of them did the same.
In the rain, a woman came down from above, a vivid blue reishi weapon in her hand, and put herself between the bull-head and Isshin.
There it is. This is exactly what I was waiting to see.
He said nothing out loud. He just quietly grabbed both of the others by the arm and pulled them back.
"This isn't the best viewing angle. Both of you, give it some room."
They stepped back and waited.
Then they watched the bull-head take a hit to the head and go down dead on the spot.
Tosen's face did something complicated.
Hang on. Are you serious. We spent all that time and effort cultivating that experimental subject, and a local just headshots it?
Does this person think our leader is someone who takes things quietly? Even Aizen has his limits. Getting the research subject blown apart like that is going to get a reaction.
Before Tosen could finish putting the complaint into words, the bull-head's reiatsu detonated inside Masaki's body.
Aizen's eyebrow rose slightly.
He connected it immediately to the hypothesis Matsushita Yusuke had raised earlier. The two pieces lined up, and the logic became clear.
"You wanted to fuse Hollow and Quincy reiatsu? I'll admit it's an interesting concept. But it's not particularly realistic."
The reason was simple.
"Hollow reiatsu is toxic to Quincies. That woman is going to be corroded and die very quickly."
Aizen's access to the Great Library through Kyoka Suigetsu had never depended on living through any particular era. His information on the Quincies was not incomplete.
He raised his right hand and pressed one finger lightly against the corner of his eye, brow pulling together without him deciding to let it.
"If you actually wanted to attempt something like this, you should have used a considerably gentler approach. The compatibility between Hollows and Quincies is essentially zero. Rejection is almost guaranteed."
Matsushita Yusuke was mildly surprised.
He had expected Aizen to come in with more irritation. The bull-head was something all of them had invested time in. Even if it had diverged from its original research purpose, the effort had been real, and Aizen had cared about it.
Watching the experimental subject get destroyed on the spot, and still being able to think clearly about the implications: that was not the reaction Matsushita Yusuke had predicted.
Maybe Aizen had grown after all.
"It's not what it looks like, Aizen-sensei. Watch."
And then Urahara Kisuke walked into the scene.
The moment Tosen registered who it was, he had nearly drawn his blade.
Aizen showed a flicker of something as well, but controlled it. Because a moment later, all three of them were hearing something considerably more interesting.
What exactly did it mean to inject Shinigami power into a Quincy's body to counterbalance the damage a Hollow's reiatsu was causing?
Even for someone who had dedicated his life to research at Aizen's depth, that sequence of words produced a genuinely baffled expression.
"Just getting the two sides to a standstill would already be extremely difficult. To aim for a three-way equilibrium on top of that..."
He went quiet.
Then, honestly:
"I couldn't do that."
Aizen Sosuke had the pride of a researcher. Under ordinary circumstances he would never have said something like that. The fact that he said it now meant something: he was acknowledging how genuinely unlikely this all was.
Watching Masaki's labored breathing gradually stabilize from across the distance, Aizen lowered his gaze and thought for a moment.
Then let out a short, quiet laugh.
It carried two things: the pleasure of having his understanding expanded, and a kind of quiet recognition of how strange the world could be.
Something he had considered completely impossible, that should not have even been theoretically viable, had just happened in front of him in plain view.
A three-way balance of power inside a single body.
"Shinigami, Quincy, Hollow. Three forces with no natural compatibility, no basis for coexistence, that can fairly be described as fundamentally opposed to each other, now fighting for space inside the same person."
And she was alive. Conscious. Holding together.
Outside of calling it a miracle, Aizen could not find another description that fit.
He narrowed his eyes slightly, expression settling into something contemplative.
Was this what people meant by fate?
Because calling it coincidence required accepting that every piece of this had simply aligned by accident. That was a difficult thing to believe.
But it had happened. Right in front of him. Which left him no ground to stand on if he wanted to keep insisting it shouldn't be possible.
He let go of the impulse to interrogate it further.
"To be shown something this rare. The trip was worth it."
For a researcher, nothing mattered more than the expansion of what you understood to be possible.
Matsushita Yusuke's attention, however, was not on any of that.
He was looking at the notification that had just appeared in front of him. He read through it briefly.
Then smiled, easy and unhurried.
Done.
As a reward for witnessing one more unforgettable moment in the history of these three worlds, Matsushita Yusuke had just received, in the most literal sense possible, a genuine upgrade.
