Chapter 1 - “Death Was Too Kind”

Kael died in the dirt.

Face pressed into cold stone.

Blood pooling beneath him.

Breath fading… slower… weaker… until even the pain began to disappear.

He tried to move.

He couldn't.

His fingers twitched, scraping uselessly against the ground as footsteps echoed behind him.

Slow. Calm. Unafraid.

They weren't running.

They knew he was finished.

---

"Is he dead?"

A voice. Familiar.

Kael wanted to laugh.

Even now… they still weren't sure.

---

"Does it matter?" another voice replied. "He was useless anyway."

A boot slammed into his ribs.

Crack.

If Kael could scream, he would have.

But all that came out was a broken gasp.

---

"Look at him," the first voice sneered. "Always pretending he'd become something."

A pause.

Then

"Pathetic."

---

That word… sank deeper than the blade.

Deeper than the pain.

Deeper than death itself.

---

Kael's vision blurred.

Not from tears.

From weakness.

From the crushing realization that they were right.

He had dreamed.

He had hoped.

He had believed… that one day, he wouldn't be the one lying in the dirt.

---

But in the end

Nothing changed.

---

His heartbeat slowed.

Each pulse weaker than the last.

The world grew distant.

Muted.

Cold.

---

And in that final moment…

Kael understood something terrifying.

---

He wasn't angry.

He wasn't even scared.

---

He just… regretted.

---

Regretted every moment he stayed silent.

Regretted every time he backed down.

Regretted every chance he had to fight… and didn't.

---

"I… don't want this…"

The words never left his mouth.

---

Darkness swallowed him whole.

---

---

Silence.

---

Then

Something cracked.

---

Not light.

Not warmth.

---

Something colder.

Sharper.

---

[System initializing…]

---

Kael's consciousness flickered.

Like a dying flame forced to burn again.

---

[Evaluating host…]

[Condition: Deceased]

[Cause of death: Weakness]

---

The voice was emotionless.

Not cruel.

Not kind.

---

Just… absolute.

---

[Verdict: Unacceptable]

---

A sudden force pulled at him

Violent. Unforgiving.

Like chains wrapped around his soul, dragging him upward.

---

Kael gasped.

Air slammed into his lungs.

Pain followed instantly.

Real. Sharp. Alive.

---

He shot upright.

Coughing. Choking. Grasping at his chest like he'd just escaped drowning.

---

"Haa! Haa!"

His heart pounded wildly.

Too fast.

Too loud.

Too… alive.

---

"…What…?"

His voice was hoarse.

Weak.

Familiar.

---

Kael froze.

Slowly… he looked around.

---

A small room.

Cracked walls.

A broken window letting in cold air.

A worn-out bed behind him.

---

His room.

---

"No…"

His hands trembled as he stared at them.

No blood.

No wounds.

No death.

---

"This… isn't possible…"

---

A memory hit him like a punch.

---

This day.

---

The day before everything went wrong.

The day before the humiliation.

The day before he lost everything.

---

"I… went back?"

---

His breathing quickened.

Hope.

Fear.

Confusion.

All crashing into him at once.

---

Then

---

[Punishment System Activated]

---

The voice returned.

Cold.

Unavoidable.

---

Kael's body stiffened.

"…System?"

---

A translucent screen appeared before his eyes.

Unfamiliar.

Yet undeniable.

---

[You lived a life defined by weakness.]

[You failed to resist.]

[You died without value.]

---

Each sentence struck harder than any weapon.

---

"…Shut up…"

---

[You have been given a second chance.]

A pause.

---

[Not as mercy.]

---

Kael's stomach dropped.

---

[But as correction.]

---

A chill spread through his entire body.

---

"Correction…?"

---

[New Rule Established:]

---

The screen shifted.

The words burned into his vision.

---

[Weakness will be punished.]

---

For a moment

Nothing happened.

---

Then

Pain.

---

It exploded inside him without warning.

---

"AAAGHH!!"

---

Kael collapsed.

His body convulsing violently as agony tore through his chest.

It felt like something was crushing his organs… slowly… deliberately.

---

"STOP!"

---

[Hesitation detected: 4 seconds]

[Punishment applied]

---

The pain intensified.

---

Kael slammed his fist into the ground.

Again.

Again.

Again.

---

Until

It stopped.

---

Just like that.

---

He lay there.

Breathing hard.

Drenched in sweat.

Eyes wide with disbelief.

---

"…You're insane…"

---

[Correct.]

---

The answer came instantly.

Without hesitation.

Without emotion.

---

Kael let out a shaky laugh.

Half fear.

Half disbelief.

---

"This isn't a blessing…"

---

[No.]

---

"…It's torture."

---

[It is necessary.]

---

Silence filled the room.

Heavy.

Oppressive.

---

Then

A new screen appeared.

---

[MISSION #1]

Defeat: Daren

Time Limit: 24 hours

Failure Penalty: Permanent loss of voice

Reward: Strength +2, Agility +1

---

Kael's pupils shrank.

---

"Daren…"

---

The name alone made his body tense.

---

Tall.

Strong.

Cruel.

---

The one who started everything.

The one who broke him… again and again.

---

"I can't beat him…"

---

[Incorrect.]

---

Pain struck again.

Sharper this time.

More precise.

---

Kael gritted his teeth, forcing himself not to scream.

---

"…Fine…"

---

He forced the words out.

---

"…I won't say that again."

---

The pain stopped.

---

Slowly

Kael pushed himself up.

His legs trembled.

But he stood.

---

His mind raced.

Faster than ever before.

---

24 hours.

---

That's all he had.

---

"Think…"

---

Running wasn't an option.

Hiding would only delay the punishment.

Begging?

Useless.

---

That left only one choice.

---

Fight.

---

Kael clenched his fists.

---

For the first time…

Not in fear.

---

But in decision.

---

"…If I lose…"

---

His voice would be gone forever.

---

"…Then I won't lose."

---

The words felt strange.

Unfamiliar.

---

But not impossible.

---

Something inside him was changing.

---

Breaking.

Reforming.

Hardening.

---

The weak version of him

The one who hesitated.

The one who endured.

The one who died in the dirt

---

Was already gone.

---

Kael walked to the broken window.

Cold air hit his face.

Sharp.

Awakening.

---

Outside

The world looked the same.

---

But it wasn't.

---

Because he wasn't.

---

"…Daren."

---

This time

There was no fear in his voice.

---

Only something darker.

---

"Let's see…"

---

A slow smile spread across his face.

Unsteady.

Unfamiliar.

---

But real.

---

"…what happens when I stop being weak."

---

Behind his eyes

The system flickered.

Watching.

Waiting.

---

[Observation:]

[Host mindset… improving]

---

And for the first time

---

[Punishment delayed]

---

Kael stepped away from the window.

---

24 hours.

---

One fight.

---

One chance.

---

His fists tightened.

---

"Good."

---

Because this time

---

He wasn't the one who would end up in the dirt.
