Inside the fortress...
The atmosphere had become suffocating.
Medical supplies were nearly exhausted.
Food could last only another week.
More importantly...
Ammunition had almost run out.
Captain James slammed his fist onto the table.
"We have less than thirty percent of our remaining ammunition."
"If another large-scale assault comes..."
"No one here survives."
Silence filled the room.
No one dared respond.
At the center of the meeting room stood several figures.
Aozaki Aoko.
Tohno Shiki.
Ciel.
Tohno Akiha.
Representatives from the Church.
Officers of the United States Army.
Members of Japan's Self-Defense Forces.
For nearly a month...
These people had abandoned every previous conflict.
Church and Magi.
Military and civilians.
Eastern and Western organizations.
Everyone now fought beneath one banner.
Humanity.
Aoko rubbed her temples.
"Any news from the scouting teams?"
One soldier lowered his head.
"No survivors."
"Every team disappeared."
Another added quietly,
"The city... belongs to the monsters now."
At those words...
The room became deathly silent.
Outside the fortress...
Darkness slowly covered Tokyo.
As night descended...
The Ghouls became even more active.
The watchtowers immediately sounded alarms.
"Waves approaching!"
"Enemy movement detected!"
"They're coming again!"
Every soldier rushed toward the walls.
Searchlights illuminated the surrounding streets.
The light revealed an endless black ocean.
Thousands.
Tens of thousands.
Perhaps hundreds of thousands.
Ghouls covered every road leading toward the fortress.
Behind them...
Dead Apostles silently watched.
Like generals observing expendable soldiers.
Boom!
The first artillery shell landed.
Then another.
And another.
The battlefield instantly erupted.
Flames illuminated the night sky.
Machine guns unleashed torrents of bullets.
Bodies piled atop one another.
Still...
The monsters continued climbing over the corpses of their fallen companions.
Within minutes...
The first Ghoul reached the trench.
It burned alive.
The second followed.
Then the third.
Soon...
The flames themselves became bridges made of burning corpses.
Captain James stared blankly.
"They're using their own bodies..."
"They don't fear death..."
One officer whispered.
"They're not attacking anymore..."
"They're consuming us."
Far away...
Gudako, Mash, and Fujimaru Ritsuka finally arrived near the battlefield.
The three stood atop a collapsed building overlooking the fortress.
The scene before them stole their words.
The fortress resembled a lonely island surrounded by an endless black sea.
Explosions illuminated countless screaming faces.
Gunfire echoed without pause.
Every second...
Someone died.
Gudako clenched her fists.
"...We have to help them."
Mash nodded firmly.
"Yes."
Fujimaru Ritsuka looked toward the fortress.
His expression slowly became resolute.
"If humanity falls here..."
"The Singularity is over."
He took a deep breath.
"Let's go."
The three immediately rushed toward humanity's final battlefield.
What none of them realized...
Was that countless pairs of crimson eyes had already noticed their arrival from the darkness.
The true battle...
Was only just beginning.
