"But it looks like less," Chen Dao said. "It looks like ordinary grey."
"That is because visible separation requires two separate things," Jian Yu said. "The color was the between quality visible as distinct from the blade. When the between quality and the blade became one thing, the visibility resolved."
Chen Dao looked at him.
"The delimitation technique," Chen Dao said. "The edges I mark. They are visible because the between quality at the boundary is distinct from the frequency on either side of it."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"If the between quality and the frequencies on either side of it became one thing—"
"The edge would disappear," Jian Yu said. "Not because the boundary was gone. Because the boundary no longer needed to be distinct."
Chen Dao was quiet.
He looked at the grey blade for a long time.
"You are the completed version of what the delimitation technique works toward," he said.
"Tell me," Jian Yu said.
"The delimitation technique marks the edges," Chen Dao said. "The goal — what I have understood for seventeen years as the technique's telos — is to make the edges so clear that the between quality can conduct freely along them. The clearer the edge, the more the between quality can do."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"But the blade suggests a further stage," Chen Dao said. "When the between quality conducts so freely along the edges that the edges dissolve into the between quality itself. The between quality becomes the entire structure rather than the boundary of the structure."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The sections," Chen Dao said slowly. "The generating sections. They are moving toward this."
"The distributed resonance," Jian Yu said. "The five sword frequency sections building toward combination frequency at generating tempo."
"They are building toward the stage where the edges dissolve," Chen Dao said.
"The combination," Jian Yu said. "The combination event at full intensity — what does it produce."
Chen Dao was very still.
"I have been thinking about this since I left the hollow," he said. "The foundational documentation. What the combination was actually doing. The five swords releasing their specific frequencies simultaneously at the formation site."
"Tell me," Jian Yu said.
"The combination was not a restoration event," Chen Dao said. "Not primarily. The restoration was the visible effect. But the mechanism—" He stopped. He reached into the leather satchel and pulled out a scroll. "The foundational documentation of the combination event. From before Dao Shen. The pre-combination theoretical records."
He opened the scroll.
He read.
He looked up.
"The combination is a simultaneous edge dissolution event," he said. "The five swords each carry the between quality in a specific form. When five specific forms of the between quality release simultaneously at the formation's focal point — the edges between the five forms dissolve. For the duration of the combination the five forms become one thing."
Jian Yu held twenty-five breaths.
He read the domain.
He reached for the five sword frequency sections.
He read the distributed resonance.
The five generating sections in slow conversation with each other.
The between quality in each section finding the between quality in the others.

Building toward the moment when the five frequencies would no longer be five frequencies.
"The distributed resonance," he said.
"Yes," Chen Dao said. "The five sections are doing the combination at generating section tempo. The slow combination. The permanent version."
"And when it completes," Jian Yu said.
"The five sections become one thing," Chen Dao said. "Not five generating sections in coordination. One continuous generation across five locations."
"How long," Jian Yu said.
Chen Dao calculated.
"At the current resonance rate," he said. "Li Shan's data shows the resonance intensifying by approximately three percent per month. The five frequencies need to reach complete integration."
"How long," Jian Yu said.
"Eight to twelve years," Chen Dao said.
Eight to twelve years.
The five sections building toward permanent combination frequency.
The distributed resonance completing into dissolution.
He looked at the grey blade.
He thought about the combination.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"And the domain extended from that integration," he said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The five sections are doing the same thing," he said. "Their specific between quality frequencies are integrating. When the integration completes—"
"The domain of the integration extends into the territory between them," Jian Yu said.
"And generates it," Chen Dao said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The land learned from the combination," Chen Dao said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The land saw what the combination did and is replicating it," Chen Dao said.
"Slowly," Jian Yu said.
"Permanently," Chen Dao said.
They looked at the five sections in the domain.
In quiet distributed resonance.
Building.
Integrating.

Then: the land doing the combination on its own.
Without five wielders.
Without the formation site.
Without the cost.
