CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTEEN

### One Month

The first week was strange.

Not painful. Strange.

He knew intellectually that the formation site was cold. Winter. Ice Sect's outer territory. The people around him were visible in the morning with breath clouds in the air.

He felt none of it.

He reached for the temperature information and found nothing. Not absence — nothing. The sense simply was not there.

He held the Lost Blade every morning.

The sword's weight was present. Its specific quality was present. The unnamed color was present. The domain when he extended it was present.

The warmth he had felt from the sword since the vault was gone.

He noted this without drama and kept working.

---

The formation's surface disruption from the second suppression deployment was clearing faster than the first. Li Shan tracked it. Elder Qin read it at the Sword Rain position alongside him. By the end of the first week Li Shan reported: sixty-eight percent surface restoration.

The third generating section — the one at eighty-six percent when the second deployment ended — had continued developing through the disruption. The deep structure was intact. The surface clearing was restoring.

Li Shan's morning report on the seventh day: *Third section at ninety-four percent. Crossing threshold in two to three days.*

Three generating sections about to become four.

Permanent.

Independent.

The Shadow Sect's suppression could not touch what was already generating.

He sent that number to Mo Xuan.

Mo Xuan's response: *Four generating sections changes the calculus significantly. Each generating section reduces the suppression capacity available for remaining sections. Their specialists can only maintain the suppression field against a limited number of frequency sources simultaneously. Four permanent sources pulling against the field and they have less than half their original capacity for the developing sections.*

*The larger deployment will be their last serious attempt at option two.*

*After that the resource cost becomes prohibitive.*

*After that they adapt.*

He read the message at the platform.

He extended the domain.

Sharpening stage. The range was already larger — not fully developed yet, still growing into the new stage's capability, but measurably further than the Tempering stage maximum.

He read the dead zone.

The developing sections in the fringe. Five of the original six projected for threshold in six months. Three already generating. The fourth approaching. The fifth at seventy-eight percent.

He directed the between quality toward the fifth section.

He could not feel the cold.

He could feel the domain. He could feel the formation's recognition. He could feel the section receiving the projection.

He worked.

---

Shen Hua managed the site with the economy that had become his baseline expectation for her.

She did not adjust her approach based on his temporary condition. She did not check on him differently. She continued the rotation management and the relay correspondence and the six months of documentation she had been building before they arrived.

On the tenth day she came to the platform and said: "Mo Xuan sent an assessment of the larger deployment's likely composition."

He read the message she handed him.

*Based on Shadow Sect's operational doctrine and the resource pool available to their dead zone operations, the larger deployment will consist of: twelve to fifteen suppression specialists rather than seven. Guard formation of one hundred and twenty to one hundred and sixty rather than eighty. Possibly an oversight cultivator — someone at the senior command level directing the suppression specialists in real time.*

*The oversight cultivator is the new variable. In the first two deployments the specialists operated from standard positioning. An oversight cultivator directing them in real time would allow the field to adapt during deployment rather than being pre-calibrated.*

*A dynamic suppression field is significantly more difficult to find gaps in.*

He handed the message back to Shen Hua.

She read the part about the oversight cultivator.

"The gap reading," she said. "The reverse projection. The gaps are identified when the field is static. A dynamic field—"

"Has no stable gaps," he said.

She was quiet.

"Li Shan," she said.

"Li Shan and Elder Qin reading the field in real time with the pattern-reading and the cold isolation depth," he said. "The combination of the two gives forty percent extended range. Against a dynamic field the real-time reading is the only tool that works."

"Can they read fast enough," she said.

"That is what the next three weeks are for," he said. "They practice the combined reading every day. By the time the larger deployment arrives they have three weeks of practice against each other's technique."

She looked at the Sword Rain position stone where Li Shan and Elder Qin were currently working.

"And the platform at Sharpening stage," she said. "With formation amplification."

"Yes," he said.

"What does that add," she said.

He looked at the platform.

He still did not know what Sharpening stage at formation amplification produced.

He would find out when the cost cleared and the domain was at full Sharpening capability.

"Something larger than before," he said.

She looked at him.

"That is not a precise answer," she said.

"No," he said.

She accepted this. Shen Hua accepted accurate imprecision the way other people accepted accurate precision — without adjustment, because it was the correct information for the situation.

"Three weeks," she said. "We prepare."

"Three weeks," he said.

He counted his breaths.

One through seven.

He was at seven.

He would get back to twelve.
