Chapter 110 - Before The Storm

CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND TEN

### Before The Storm

Six days before Li Shan's arrival.

Jian Yu worked the platform every morning. Domain at twelve breaths. The between quality directed toward the two seeded sections closest to threshold in the dead zone fringe. Two of the six sections projected to reach generation within six months. The ones that needed the most support before the suppression arrived.

He worked them for sixty to ninety minutes each morning then let the domain restore.

Li Shan was tracking the development rate from his position in transit — still three days out but the Sword Rain Blade's pattern-reading had sufficient range at Sharpening stage to monitor the dead zone from distance.

On the third morning his message arrived: *The seventy-three percent section is at seventy-nine. The eighty-nine percent section crossed threshold overnight.*

One section generating.

Already.

Before the suppression deployment even began.

He sent that to Mo Xuan.

Mo Xuan's response: *They will know. The section's generating frequency is readable to any trained practitioner in the dead zone's coverage area. Shadow Sect's specialists will report it within two days. This accelerates their timeline.*

"Accelerates how much," Shen Hua said when he read her the message.

"Mo Xuan," he said.

He sent the question.

Mo Xuan's response took an hour.

*Two to three days earlier than the original seven to ten day window. They will deploy the suppression team within four to five days of today.*

Four to five days.

Li Shan arriving in six.

A day's gap.

Shen Hua read the math without being told.

"Li Shan will not be here when they arrive," she said.

"No," Jian Yu said.

She looked at the formation. At the four positions currently occupied — Lost Blade, Vermilion Flame, Frostbite, Flowing Hand disruption at the western stone.

The Sword Rain position empty.

"What does the Sword Rain position add that the other four cannot cover," she said.

"Real-time reading of the suppression field as it deploys," Jian Yu said. "The pattern-reading sees the complete structure of what they are building in real time. Not just where they are standing. What the field will do before it completes."

"Without that," she said.

"We are reactive," he said. "The reverse projection reads their coordination. But the suppression technique is not a coordination of agents. It is a cultivation field. Different reading requirement."

She was quiet.

"Can the Lost Blade read a cultivation field," she said.

He thought about this.

The between quality directed outward. Reading the gaps in coordination arrangements. Finding the space between things.

A suppression field was a structure. The spaces between the seven positions were gaps. He had read them during the first encounter — identified the three gap points that the field's geometry could not cover.

"Partially," he said. "I can read the gaps in the field. Not the complete structure. The gaps are where the projection can work."

"Is the gap reading sufficient without Li Shan's complete pattern-reading," she said.

"If the field is the same as the first deployment," he said. "Yes. But if they have modified the field based on what failed the first time—"

"They will have modified it," she said.

"Yes," he said.

She looked at the Sword Rain position stone.

"Elder Qin," she said. She raised her voice slightly.

Elder Qin appeared from the camp.

"Your cold isolation technique," Shen Hua said. "The pattern-reading component. Ice Sect's advanced cultivation includes a reading application for spiritual fields."

"Yes," Elder Qin said. "Not as refined as the Sword Rain Blade. A different mechanism. But functional."

"Can you read a suppression field's structure as it deploys," Shen Hua said.

Elder Qin was quiet for a moment.

"I have never attempted to read a suppression field specifically," she said. "I have read cultivation barriers and formation fields. The suppression technique is a different structure." She paused. "But the reading mechanism is the same. The structure being read is different. Not impossible."

"Practice it today," Shen Hua said. "And tomorrow. And the day after."

Elder Qin looked at her.

"The Sword Rain Blade's position," Shen Hua said. "We do not have the Sword Rain Blade. We have you."

"Sixty percent compatibility," Elder Qin said.

"Sixty percent is better than zero," Shen Hua said.

Elder Qin looked at the Sword Rain position stone.

She walked to it.

She stood at it and extended her cold isolation technique outward in the pattern-reading configuration.

The formation caught it.

Not the Sword Rain Blade's precision. Something else. The cold isolation technique's foundational frequency reaching outward through the stone's geometric focusing with the formation's amplification behind it.

"It works," Elder Qin said. Quietly. To herself first.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. She had been reading. "The formation does not require the specific sword frequency. It amplifies whatever frequency is provided at the correct position."

Elder Qin looked at the stone.

"I am not Li Shan," she said.

"No," Jian Yu said. "But Li Shan is six days away and the deployment is four to five days away and you are here."

She looked at him.

"Practice today," she said. "And tomorrow. And the day after."

She began.

He counted twelve breaths.

He watched Elder Qin practice the pattern-reading at the Sword Rain position stone and the formation amplify it and the valley hold its cold morning quality around them.

Three centuries of preparation.

One more days needed.

He stayed at twelve.
