CHAPTER ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT
### Li Shan's Decision
The message came at midday.
From Li Shan. Not the archive update format. Not the cascade data summary.
A personal message. Direct.
*I am leaving the vault.*
*The archive is complete for the current phase. The coordination network is operational. The River-Stone reconstruction is at ninety-six percent and will complete without my direct involvement. I have trained three archive staff members to handle ongoing updates.*
*The Shadow Sect situation changes the priority picture. The dead zone fringe sections are the most vulnerable in the current growing season work. They are in the outer range. Limited protection. The forty-three agent response was the beginning. Mo Xuan's assessment of escalation is correct.*
*The Sword Rain Blade's pattern-reading capability at the formation site is the most useful application of the five positions for ongoing defensive work. Not for one engagement. For continuous assessment of Shadow Sect movement patterns in the dead zone.*
*I have been at the vault for three months. The vault does not need me anymore.*
*The formation does.*
*I will arrive in ten days.*
*Also: I am formally joining Mo Xuan's network. Not a reasonable arrangement. Joining. Tell Shen Bo I said that. He will find it significant.*
He read the message twice.
He sent it to Shen Bo.
Shen Bo's response came back in forty minutes.
*Li Shan joining officially. This is extremely significant. I am noting it in the network's primary record. Also I told you this would happen fourteen months ago and I intend to mention it.*
---
He showed the messages at the evening fire.
Feng Luo's expression moved through several states quickly. He settled on something that was technically neutral but had the Flame Blade's fire three inches higher than neutral.
"He said formally joining," Feng Luo said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"Not reasonable arrangement," Feng Luo said.
"No," Jian Yu said.
"The word joining," Feng Luo said. "From Li Shan."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
Bing Xi was reading the message with the Frostbite Edge drawn. Not for combat. She sometimes drew it when she was processing something significant. The sword helped her think.
"He has been at the vault building the archive for three months," she said. "Making sure the next generation has what this generation had to discover." She paused. "And now he is leaving the vault because the work has moved to the formation."
"The work develops the worker," Lin Mei said. She was writing at the camp table. Not looking up.
"What," Feng Luo said.
"Li Shan said it," she said. "In a relay message. Months ago. The work develops the worker. He has been working in the archive. The archive work developed him toward the formation."
She kept writing.
Feng Luo looked at Jian Yu.
"She remembers everything he says," Feng Luo said quietly.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"Everything," Feng Luo said.
"Everything," Jian Yu confirmed.
---
Shen Hua came to the fire an hour later with a relay document.
She set it on the ground between them.
"Ice Sect's outer territory command," she said. "My request for defensive positioning. Approved."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"Four senior cultivators and twenty outer territory guards," she said. "Arriving in eight days."
"Eight days," he said.
"One day before the Shadow Sect's suppression deployment window opens," she said. "Li Shan's pattern-reading puts the window at seven to ten days."
She looked at the document.
"The sect leader added a note," she said. She picked up the document and read it. "The note says: tell the wielder of the Lost Blade that the formation was built for this. Three centuries of preparation was not wasted on one combination event. It was built for everything the combination would need to protect afterward."
She put the document down.
"The sect leader has been reading the archive," Jian Yu said.
"Every section," Shen Hua said. "He sent a message to Li Shan last month requesting the complete What Was Here Before documentation. He said he needed to understand what Ice Sect had been holding without knowing it."
Jian Yu looked at the nine standing stones.
Three centuries.
Ice Sect had placed a restriction on the formation site one hundred and forty three years ago to preserve the information for the next attempt. The restriction had been buried at the wrong classification level. The information had been lost to everyone except the archive staff for over a century.
The sect leader was now reading the full history of what his sect had been protecting without knowing what they were protecting.
"He understands now," Jian Yu said.
"Yes," Shen Hua said.
She looked at the formation.
"Four senior cultivators and twenty guards," she said. "And three wielders currently present. And Li Shan in ten days." She paused. "And the formation itself."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"It is enough," she said.
She said it without asking. Not reassurance. Assessment.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"Enough to hold," she said.
"Enough to hold long enough," he said. "For the six sections to reach threshold. For the generating sections to become permanent. For the work to reach the point where their suppression cannot undo it."
She looked at the platform.
"Then that is what we do," she said.
She went back to the rotation management.
The fire burned.
Twelve breaths.
He stayed at twelve.
