CHAPTER NINETY FOUR
### News From The Network
A relay cluster arrived on the seventh day north of the school.
Five messages. Different sources. All arriving within the same relay cycle.
Jian Yu read them at the midday stop.
The first was from Feng Luo.
*Northeastern sections complete. Three sections. All three accelerated by Xian Yue's field staff readings and my directed heat application. One crossed threshold during the application. Xian Yue says her staff were practicing the modified sequence at the section's edge during the application and it pushed the section over.*
*Her staff. Practicing the modified sequence. Because they read the archive and implemented it without being told to.*
*She says: this is what having a trained team means. I say: tell Li Shan.*
*Li Shan already knew. He had the cascade data.*
*I am staying in the eastern territory for the liaison office's field rotation. Three weeks. Tell me when you are north.*
Jian Yu read this to Lin Mei and Bing Xi.
Lin Mei said: "Xian Yue's staff practiced the modified sequence without being told."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"She built a team that implements without requiring instruction," she said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The eastern liaison office is doing growing season work independently," she said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
She looked at her documentation pack.
"The archive's distribution to the network has produced independent practitioners doing the work," she said. "Not five wielders specifically. The network's practitioners. Anyone near a section who has read the guidance and implemented it."
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The growing season does not require the five wielders," she said. "It requires the archive and the network and practitioners who are willing to implement what the archive documents."
"The five wielders accelerate it," Jian Yu said. "The network sustains it."
"Yes," she said.
She began writing.
The second message was from Wei Han.
*Southeastern sections update: the thirty-eight sections addressed in the forty-day window have developed faster than the projection predicted. Li Shan says the domain passive contribution is reaching the southeastern territory at the outer edge of the expansion range. The improving conditions are partly from the northern stabilization and partly from something else. He says: partly from the wielder's domain, twenty-four sections now in range, the southeastern edge of the domain is contributing low-level input to the closest southeastern sections.*
*I felt the change in the southeastern application work. Something arrived that made the technique more responsive. I did not know what it was until Li Shan's message.*
*Tell Jian Yu: the domain is doing something I can feel in the application work even at this distance.*
He read the message.
The southeastern edge of the domain reaching Wei Han's work territory.
He had not tracked whether the domain was contributing to areas where Wei Han was applying the restorative technique. He extended the domain deliberately at twelve breaths and reached for the southeastern territories.
The outer edge of range. Faint. But present.
Wei Han's restorative application frequency was registering at the domain's outer edge — not reading it clearly, feeling its existence. The domain's passive input and Wei Han's active technique in the same territory.
He sent back: *Confirmed. The domain is reaching the southeastern edge. Continue the application work. The passive input will support what you are doing.*
The third message was from Li Shan.
*The River-Stone reconstruction is at sixty-eight percent. Faster than projected. The Flowing Hand school's twelve practitioners submitted their records yesterday. Three of them have significant fragment concentrations — practitioners who have been at the school for twenty-five to thirty years and whose sequences contain fragments Li Shan's original comparison did not detect because the sequences were too developed from the original fragments to read as fragments until compared against the accumulation from all sources.*
*The complete River-Stone sequence may be reconstructable above the seventy-five percent threshold this week.*
*At seventy-five percent the sequence will be functionally complete. The remaining twenty-five percent may be recoverable over years as additional practice records are submitted. But seventy-five percent is sufficient for transmission.*
*Li Shan is preparing the transmission materials. The clearing practitioners will receive them first. Then the hub's support network distribution.*
*River-Stone's sequence will be available to every practitioner in the realm who wants it within thirty days.*
He read this message twice.
Three centuries.
One sequence.
Recovered through the accumulated practice of hundreds of people who had each been maintaining fragments without knowing they were fragments of something larger.
Available within thirty days.
The fourth message was from Mo Xuan.
*The network's southern coordination has identified three additional sections in the transition zone between the southeastern approach and the original recovery region's southern boundary. These sections were outside the growing season's initial mapping because they fell in the gap between Mo Xuan's network's old coverage and the liaison office's current coverage.*
*The three sections have been visited by a field team from Mo Xuan's redirected network. Development confirmed. Practice history at each site — moderate, not the multi-generational depth of the eastern sections, but present. Ten to fifteen years each.*
*Estimated threshold time: fourteen months with active cultivation input, twenty-four months passive.*
*Mo Xuan's network has the practitioners to provide active cultivation input if the protocol is confirmed.*
*Requesting confirmation to proceed.*
Jian Yu read this message.
Mo Xuan's network. Redirected. Now identifying and developing seeded sections in the transition zones.
He sent back: *Confirmed. Proceed. Send the sections' positions to Li Shan for cascade integration.*
Mo Xuan's response arrived in an hour.
*Proceeding. Also: the third section in the group — the transition zone boundary section — shows a frequency signature I have not seen in the growing season documentation. It is not the standard seeding effect frequency. It has a quality similar to what the clearing practitioners described in their River-Stone reconstruction submissions.*
*I am not a section reader. But I have spent thirty years studying the combination's effects. Something in that section predates the second combination's seeding.*
*I am sending the position to Bing Xi for reading.*
Jian Yu looked at Bing Xi.
She already had the message on her relay.
She was looking at the section's position on the map with the Frostbite Edge extended.
"At this range I cannot read it fully," she said. "But Mo Xuan is correct. There is something in the transition zone boundary section that is not standard seeding frequency." She paused. "Similar to the clearing. Not as developed. Earlier stage."
"Another section with pre-combination history," Jian Yu said.
"Possibly," she said. "Or a section where the first combination's seeding frequency has partially persisted in the pathway structure without the benefit of consistent maintenance."
"A section River-Stone did not find," Jian Yu said.
"Or found and could not reach," she said.
He looked at the map.
The transition zone boundary section was three weeks northeast from their current position.
"After the growing season sections on the northern route," he said.
"Yes," Bing Xi said. "Three weeks northeast puts it in the same direction as the remaining confirmed sections."
The fifth message was from the sixteen-year-old merchant daughter.
It was the shortest of the five messages.
*I wrote to the school teacher in Chenghe. She wrote back. We have been corresponding for three weeks. She practices at her seeded section every morning. I practice at the junction twice a year. She says: the sections are different types but the work is the same. I think she is right.*
*Also: I sent my section's practice data to Li Shan's River-Stone project. He says one fragment confirmed. It is from the part of the sequence that the other sources do not have.*
*I found a piece no one else had.*
He read this last message to the group.
Lin Mei looked at the message for a moment.
"She found a piece no one else had," she said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"A sixteen-year-old on the eastern road twice a year," she said.
"Yes," Jian Yu said.
"The fragment was in her practice because her family built the practice around what the land needed," she said. "The land needed that fragment preserved. The family preserved it without knowing what it was." She paused. "And now it is in the reconstruction."
"Don't waste it," Jian Yu said.
"None of them wasted it," she said.
He looked at the five messages. At the network of people doing the work across the realm. At the growing season sections developing and the River-Stone sequence being reconstructed and Wei Han applying the restoration technique in the southeast and Mo Xuan's redirected network finding new sections and the sixteen-year-old corresponding with the school teacher.
He counted his breaths.
One through twelve.
He stayed at twelve.
The work was large.
It had always been.
He kept walking.
