Chapter 87 - South

CHAPTER EIGHTY SEVEN

### South

Three days south from the hub.

The domain covered ground that had not been covered before — territory between the hub and the southern lowlands that fell between relay station ranges, the specific gaps in the network that Shen Bo had been planning to close for twenty years. The sections in these gaps were unconfirmed. Li Shan's cascade analysis had flagged four possible locations based on the outer range calculation. Two were within domain travel range on the southward route.

Jian Yu walked and the domain extended and Bing Xi read.

On the first day: nothing.

The first possible location was six li west of the road. He deviated. The domain reached it at four li and read it as outside the combination's outer range — not seeded, not developing, simply land. He returned to the road.

On the second day: the second possible location.

Three li east of the road. He deviated again.

At two li the domain found something.

Not the seeding frequency specifically. Something earlier. The precursor quality — the land organized around something that had not yet arrived at visible development. The pathways oriented but not yet actively building.

"Pre-threshold," Bing Xi said.

"The second seeding arrived here," Jian Yu said. "But no practice history to accelerate it."

"The cascade data shows it at the lowest development rate of any confirmed section," she said. "Without practice input it will reach threshold in approximately eight years on its own."

"Eight years," Lin Mei said.

"Without input," Bing Xi said. "With consistent practice input — someone doing a cultivation sequence at this site regularly — eighteen months. Maybe less."

Jian Yu looked at the surrounding terrain.

No village nearby. No obvious human settlement. A river crossing half a li south. The road through it was used by travelers — he could read that in the path's condition. People passed through. Nobody stayed.

"The relay network gap," he said.

"Shen Bo's expansion list," Bing Xi said. "There is a planned relay station for this junction. The river crossing makes it a natural stop."

"When Shen Bo builds the relay station," Jian Yu said. "The station operator will be in range of this section every day."

"Yes," Bing Xi said.

"Send it to Shen Bo," Jian Yu said. "The section's position and the development projection. When he builds the station he should brief the operator on the morning sequence and the section's significance."

"Already sending," Lin Mei said.

Shen Bo's response came back in two hours.

*The river crossing station has been on the expansion list for eleven years. It moves to the top today. Construction begins next month. I will brief the first operator personally.*

*Also: I visited the clearing this morning. You were right. She would have wanted to see it.*

*I told her.*

Jian Yu read the message.

He sent back nothing.

Some responses did not need words.

He counted his breaths.

One through nine.

They walked south.

---

On the third day they reached the southern lowlands proper.

The terrain opened. The specific warmth of lower altitude after months in the northern territories. The vegetation change — thicker, more varied, the specific vitality of land that received more sun and rain than the high country.

The secondary reduction effect was less here than in the transition zones. Already improving. The northern stabilization had been working for nine months and the improvement was measurable in the quality of the air — not healed, better.

"Two years," Bing Xi said.

"Before full normalization," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. "Li Shan's estimate was correct."

They passed through two small towns.

In the first town nobody knew who they were. They ate midday meal at an inn and moved on without the conversations about the combination that had become standard in the recovery regions and the growing season sections.

In the second town a practitioner at the market supply stall recognized the Lost Blade's unnamed color and stopped mid-transaction.

"The combination," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

She looked at the blade for a moment. Not with the assessment quality of a senior cultivator or the reverence quality of someone who had studied the historical record. With the specific recognition of someone who had felt something change in the land nine months ago and had not had an explanation until now.

"The land," she said. "In the third month after. The cultivation quality improved. I thought I was imagining it."

"You were not imagining it," Jian Yu said. "The northern stabilization propagates through the network. The secondary reduction effect is improving."

She absorbed this.

"The morning exercises," she said. "The archive's practical guidance section. We received it through the relay two months ago." She paused. "I have been doing them."

"Near a seeded section," Jian Yu said.

"I don't know," she said. "I don't know if there is a seeded section here."

Jian Yu reached for the domain.

The market town was within range of the fourth confirmed southern section — one of Li Shan's originally identified positions that Shen Bo's records had corroborated. Not in the town itself. Half a li northwest.

"Half a li northwest," he said. "Where the road forks toward the river path."

She looked northwest.

"I walk that road twice a week," she said. "To the herbalist."

"The section is developing," he said. "Your exercises on that road are contributing to it."

She looked at him.

"Twice a week," she said. "Is that enough."

"More frequent is more effective," Bing Xi said. "But consistency matters more than frequency. Twice weekly done consistently for years is more effective than daily practice for a month and then nothing."

"Then twice weekly consistently," the practitioner said. She said it with the specific quality of someone making a decision that was not difficult because it fit naturally into something they were already doing.

She went back to her transaction.

They moved on.

Lin Mei was writing the encounter for the archive's practical guidance supplemental. The section on how to talk to southern lowland practitioners about their proximity to developing sections. How to explain what they are doing without making it feel larger than their daily life.

She had been building this supplemental since Chenghe.

By the time they reached their camp that evening it had seventeen pages.
