Chapter 21 - The Fall Begins

The news didn't wait.

It exploded.

By 8:00 AM—

Every major business outlet carried the same headline:

"Hayes Corporation Under Investigation: CEO Daniel Hayes Implicated"

Photos.

Speculation.

Expert opinions.

All pointing to one thing—

Daniel Hayes was falling.

Inside Hayes Corporation—

The atmosphere was suffocating.

Phones ringing nonstop.

Employees whispering.

Executives avoiding eye contact.

Because this wasn't just pressure anymore.

This was reputation.

And reputation—

Once broken—

Didn't recover easily.

"Sir, media is outside."

"Sir, legal team needs a statement."

"Sir—"

Daniel raised his hand.

Silence.

He stood still.

Calm.

Too calm.

"Prepare a press conference," he said.

The room froze.

"Sir?" his assistant asked.

"You heard me," Daniel said.

A pause.

"If they want a story…"

His eyes darkened.

"Let's give them one."

Across the city—

Carter Holdings.

Emily Carter read the same headlines.

Her expression didn't change.

Because this—

Was expected.

But then—

Robert stepped in.

"Daniel Hayes just called for a press conference," he said.

That—

Made her pause.

"When?" she asked.

"In one hour."

Silence.

Because that wasn't survival.

That was a move.

"Prepare a response," Robert said.

Emily shook her head slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"I want to see what he does."

One hour later—

Every camera in the city was pointed at one place.

Hayes Corporation Headquarters.

Reporters gathered.

Lights flashing.

Questions shouting.

And then—

Daniel Hayes stepped onto the stage.

Silence fell.

Because this—

Was the moment.

Daniel stood behind the podium.

Suit sharp.

Expression calm.

But his eyes—

Were different.

"Good morning," he said.

His voice steady.

Controlled.

"I'm sure you've all seen the headlines."

A ripple of murmurs.

"Allegations," he continued.

A pause.

"Investigations."

He looked directly into the cameras.

"Let me make one thing clear."

Silence.

"I have nothing to hide."

Across the city—

Emily watched the live broadcast.

Unblinking.

Because this—

Wasn't panic.

This was something else.

Back at the press conference—

A reporter shouted:

"Mr. Hayes, are you denying all charges?"

Daniel didn't hesitate.

"No," he said.

Silence.

Confusion spread instantly.

"No?" another reporter repeated.

Daniel's lips curved slightly.

"I'm saying," he continued calmly,

"That you're asking the wrong question."

The room went still.

Across the city—

Emily's eyes narrowed slightly.

Because now—

She understood.

Back at the stage—

Daniel stepped forward.

"If you want to talk about investigations…"

A pause.

"Let's talk about all of them."

Gasps.

"What does that mean?" someone asked.

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He reached into his folder.

And placed a document on the podium.

Then another.

And another.

"I'm not the only one being investigated," he said.

Silence.

Dead silence.

"Carter Holdings," Daniel continued,

"has also been under review."

Shock.

Because this—

Was unexpected.

Across the city—

Robert turned to Emily.

"That's not public information," he said.

Emily didn't respond.

But her eyes—

Had sharpened.

Back at the conference—

Daniel looked directly into the cameras.

"These investigations…"

A pause.

"Didn't start with me."

Whispers exploded.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Are you accusing Carter Holdings?"

"Do you have proof?"

Daniel raised his hand.

And the room fell silent again.

"You wanted transparency," he said.

His voice lower now.

Sharper.

"Then let's be transparent."

And then—

He said it.

"Emily Carter initiated this."

Silence.

Total.

Across the city—

Emily froze.

Just for a second.

Because this—

Wasn't defense.

This was attack.

Back at the stage—

Daniel's gaze didn't waver.

"She used regulatory pressure to force control," he said.

"And now…"

A pause.

"She's trying to bury the consequences."

Chaos.

Reporters shouting.

Cameras flashing.

Because this—

Was war—

In public.

Daniel stepped back slightly.

And then—

Delivered the final blow.

"If Carter Holdings wants a war…"

His eyes darkened.

"They should be ready to be exposed."

He turned.

And walked off.

Leaving behind—

Explosion.

Across the city—

Emily stood still.

The broadcast still playing.

Her name.

Her company.

Dragged into the open.

Robert spoke carefully.

"This changes everything."

Emily didn't respond.

Because she knew.

This wasn't damage.

This was exposure.

Her phone buzzed.

One message.

Daniel Hayes: "Your move."

Silence.

Emily stared at the screen.

Then—

Slowly—

Smiled.

Not angry.

Not shaken.

Excited.

"Good," she murmured.

Because now—

There were no limits left.

No rules.

No control.

Only one outcome.

Someone would fall.

And this time—

The whole world would watch.

💬 Did Daniel just destroy Emily's reputation… or is this all part of her plan?
