Chapter 12 - The Deal in the Shadows

Night had a different kind of silence.

Not peaceful.

Not calm.

Strategic.

The city lights flickered across the glass walls of a private lounge on the top floor of the Obsidian Tower.

No crowd.

No noise.

Just power—

Hidden in plain sight.

Daniel Hayes stepped inside.

The room was dimly lit.

Soft jazz played in the background.

Luxury without display.

Control without noise.

And at the far end—

Someone was already waiting.

"Right on time," the man said.

Daniel didn't respond immediately.

He walked forward slowly, his gaze fixed on the figure seated comfortably in a leather chair.

Alexander Knight.

The name alone carried weight.

Not public.

Not loud.

But in the right circles—

Untouchable.

"You always preferred dramatic entrances," Alexander added, swirling the glass in his hand.

Daniel stopped across from him.

"And you always preferred hiding in the shadows," he replied.

A faint smile appeared on Alexander's lips.

"Not hiding," he said.

"Observing."

Silence settled between them.

Not awkward.

Not tense.

Measured.

"So," Alexander said finally,"the great Daniel Hayes… asking for help."

Daniel's expression didn't change.

"I didn't come for sympathy."

Alexander chuckled softly.

"Good," he said.

"Because I don't offer it."

Daniel sat down.

"Then let's not waste time."

Alexander leaned back slightly.

"I've been watching," he said.

A pause.

"Carter Holdings. Emily Carter."

Daniel's jaw tightened slightly.

"You know her?"

Alexander's eyes glinted faintly.

"I know of her."

A beat.

"And now… I'm interested."

Daniel didn't like that.

Not even a little.

"Stay out of this," he said.

Alexander laughed.

"That's not how this works."

He leaned forward slightly.

"You came to me," he said."Which means… you already know you can't win this alone."

Silence.

Daniel didn't deny it.

Because denying it—

Would be useless.

"What do you want?" Daniel asked.

Alexander smiled.

"There it is."

He placed his glass down.

"Access," he said simply.

Daniel frowned.

"To what?"

Alexander's gaze sharpened.

"Carter Holdings."

The words landed quietly.

But heavily.

Daniel leaned back slightly.

"You're not interested in helping me," he said.

Alexander's smile widened.

"Of course I am."

A pause.

"But I'm more interested in… opportunity."

Daniel studied him carefully.

Because men like Alexander Knight—

Didn't make moves without reason.

"You think you can challenge her?" Daniel asked.

Alexander didn't answer immediately.

Instead—

He looked out at the city.

"I think," he said slowly,"she hasn't been challenged yet."

Silence.

"And you want to be the first?" Daniel pressed.

Alexander's lips curved slightly.

"No."

A pause.

"I want to see what happens… when she is."

Daniel exhaled quietly.

This wasn't simple.

This wasn't clean.

But it was—

Leverage.

"What's the deal?" he asked.

Alexander leaned forward.

"You give me access to internal movement," he said."Strategy shifts. Decision patterns."

A pause.

"And I give you something you don't have."

Daniel's gaze sharpened.

"What?"

Alexander smiled.

"Unpredictability."

Across the city—

Emily Carter stood in her office.

Still.

Silent.

But something felt—

Off.

She couldn't explain it.

Didn't need to.

Because instincts like hers—

Didn't lie.

"Robert," she said.

He stepped forward.

"Yes?"

"Dig deeper into Hayes Corporation," she said.

A pause.

"I want everything."

Robert nodded.

"Understood."

Emily turned toward the window.

Her reflection stared back at her.

Calm.

Controlled.

But beneath that—

Something shifted.

"Something's changed," she murmured.

Back at Obsidian Tower—

Daniel stood.

"So," he said.

"Do we have a deal?"

Alexander remained seated.

Watching him.

Measuring him.

Then—

Slowly—

He stood as well.

And extended his hand.

"Welcome," Alexander said quietly,

"To the other side of the game."

Daniel looked at his hand.

Hesitated—

Just for a second.

Then—

Shook it.

And just like that—

The game changed.

Because this was no longer:

Emily vs Daniel.

Now—

There was a third player.

And he didn't play fair.
