Chapter 4 - chapter four

The Conqueror's Mercy

Azura's palace lay at Lucian's feet, its people pacing in terror. He stood before King Arin, the man who'd razed his kingdom, his sword poised to strike. But something stayed his hand – a spark of recognition in Arin's eyes, a glimmer of a man, not just a king.

"Why did you kill my family?" Lucian growled, his voice a low rumble.

Arin's voice was barely a whisper. "I... didn't... know..."

Lucian's grip on his sword tightened, his knuckles white. He raised his hand, and Xerath slithered forward, hissing. "Kill him," the snake whispered.

But Lucian's gaze locked onto Arin's daughter, Lyra, her eyes wide with fear. A memory flashed – Aria, his sister, looking up at him with similar eyes. He saw the same terror, the same desperation.

His hand dropped, his voice cold. "Spare them. All of them."

As the tension broke, Lyra's eyes met his, confusion and curiosity mingling with her fear. Lucian turned away, his mask slipping for a moment. "Prepare the palace. We'll discuss Azura's... surrender."

The war was over. The real battle was just beginning.
