Before anyone called it "77 SHADOW STREET" before the brass numbers were bolted onto the stone, before the city grew tall enough to hide it, there was something else there.

No one could agree on what it used to be.

Some said it was an empty lot that refused to stay empty. Others whispered about an older structure, something narrow and wrong, that stood there long before the streets had names. There were records, of course but they never seemed to match. Dates changed. Blueprints contradicted themselves. Floors appeared on paper that had never existed… and others vanished entirely.

But one thing remained constant.

People moved in and eventually they stopped moving out.

The first incident was small enough to ignore.

A woman on the seventh floor reported hearing footsteps above her ceiling, even though the floor above was still under construction. Workers checked no one was there the space was empty bare concrete, untouched.

Two nights later, the workers refused to go back up they said the floor plan had changed.

Hallways stretched longer than they should. Corners led to places that weren’t marked one man swore he found a door that opened into another hallway… identical to the one he’d just left.

By the time the building was finished, people had already started forgetting, Not everything… Just enough.

Enough to sign leases.

Enough to carry boxes through the lobby without asking why the air felt so heavy, or why the walls seemed to listen.

Enough to ignore the small things.

Like how some floors didn’t appear on every elevator panel or how certain doors were always locked until they weren’t or how, if you stood very still in the hallway at the right hour, you might hear breathing on the other side of the walls.

Not wind…

Something slower…

Something patient…

Management changed over the years.

Faces came and went but the man at the front desk he was always there. Maybe not the same man maybe not the same face,,, but always the same smile, the same flat voice, the same way of saying "welcome" like it meant something else entirely.

No one remembers when the warnings started appearing, scratched into walls etched into doors hidden in places no one thought to look until it was too late.

Because the building doesn’t just stand there. It changes it watches it learns. Every person who walks through its doors leaves something behind footsteps, voices, memories.

And the building keeps them replays them uses them.

So when Jenna Cross stepped inside for the first time, shaking rain from her sleeves and glancing around the quiet lobby the building already knew her.

It had been waiting not for her specifically but for someone like her someone who would notice. Someone who would listen someone who might finally understand why no one ever truly leaves the "77 SHADOW STREET"
