Chapter 1 - Bound in the Throne Room

The air in the Shadow Court tasted like midnight and sin.

Lirael Voss stood chained in the center of the vast obsidian throne room, her wrists bound by living shadows that pulsed like a heartbeat. Every time she tested the bonds, they tightened with a lover's cruelty — cold, possessive, and far too intimate for her liking.

She lifted her chin, refusing to look broken.

Her long pink hair cascaded down her back in messy waves, a few strands still dusted with the grit of the mortal world. The Shadow Court had stripped away her thief's leathers and dressed her in their version of "appropriate" — a flowing off-shoulder silk gown in shades of pink and deep purple.

Thick braided ropes crossed her chest and cinched her waist, accentuating every curve. The fabric was beautiful. The message was clear: she was no longer a thief. She was a prize.

And the man who had claimed her sat on the throne like he owned the night itself.

Prince Thorne Veyl.

Long black hair spilled over one shoulder, framing a face carved from ice and shadow. His dark regal coat, embroidered with gold thread that seemed to move on its own, clung to broad shoulders and a lean, powerful frame. Glowing violet eyes watched her with lazy intensity, as if he were deciding whether to devour her now or later.

Lira met his gaze without flinching.

"You're staring, Your Highness," she said, voice sharp despite the chains. "Haven't seen a human before?"

A low murmur rippled through the assembled courtiers. Thorne's lips curved into the barest hint of a smile — cold, dangerous, and far too handsome.

"I've seen many humans," he replied, his voice smooth as velvet over steel. "None of them have ever walked the Veil and lived. None of them have stolen a piece of the Shadow Crown and survived the touch."

He rose from the throne in one fluid motion and descended the steps. Each bootfall echoed through the hall like a warning.

When he stopped in front of her, he towered over her. The scent of night air, ancient magic, and something darkly sweet wrapped around her.

"You're either very brave or very stupid, little Veil Walker," Thorne murmured, close enough that only she could hear.

Lira smirked. "I prefer resourceful."

Thorne's gloved fingers brushed a strand of pink hair from her face. The touch was deceptively gentle, but shadows curled from his fingertips, reaching toward her skin like they recognized her.

"You stole something that belongs to me," he continued. "A fragment of the Shadow Crown. Do you even understand what you've done?"

"I needed it," Lira answered, eyes flashing. "My sister is dying. Shadow-plague. The kind only your precious magic can cure. So yes, I stole it. Kill me if you want, but at least make it quick."

Thorne studied her for a long moment, violet eyes darkening.

Then he leaned in, his breath warm against her ear.

"I'm not going to kill you, Lirael Voss."

The way he said her full name sent an unwelcome shiver down her spine.

"I'm going to use you."

He straightened, voice rising so the entire court could hear.

"The Shadow Trials begin in three days. They will decide the next ruler of Elyndor… and whether the Void consumes us all. You, mortal, possess the only power that can help me win."

Lira's stomach dropped.

"You want me to compete?" she asked, incredulous.

"No." Thorne's smile was slow and predatory. "I want you to be my weapon. My key through barriers no fae can cross. In return…"

He paused, letting the silence stretch.

"I will give you enough pure shadow essence to cure your sister completely."

Lira's heart stuttered.

Freedom for Elara. A real chance at saving her.

But the price…

Thorne tilted her chin up with two fingers, forcing her to meet his eyes.

"And one more thing," he said softly. "The moment you touched that Crown fragment, something awakened between us. A shadow bond. It will only grow stronger."

His thumb brushed her lower lip, sending a spark of heat through her body.

"So get used to it, little thief."

His violet eyes gleamed with dark promise.

"Because you no longer belong to the mortal world."

"You belong to me."
