Chapter 3 - This time I walk away

Morning light filled the room.

Warm.

Peaceful.

Normal.

Kael sat on the edge of his bed, unmoving.

His gaze was distant.

Unfocused.

"…So it wasn't a dream."

His hand slowly rose to his chest.

Right above his heart.

A faint glow pulsed beneath his skin.

Soft.

But unmistakable.

Real.

The moment his fingers touched it—

[Universe Core System Active]

[Host: Kael]

[State: Stable]

A translucent screen appeared before his eyes.

Kael froze.

"…So it's true…"

His expression darkened.

"…I really came back."

Images flashed through his mind—

The battlefield.

The ritual.

Lina's fading smile.

His fingers clenched tightly.

"…I won't let it happen again."

The air around him grew cold.

Then—

[Initializing basic interface…]

More screens unfolded.

Clean.

Minimal.

But filled with information.

[Status]

Name: Kael

Level: 1

Strength: 8

Agility: 9

Vitality: 7

Mana: 12

Kael stared at the numbers.

"…This is… my past self."

Weak.

Painfully weak.

"…Pathetic."

His jaw tightened.

But then—

[Notice: Host possesses residual combat experience from future timeline.]

[Adaptive growth potential increased.]

Kael's eyes flickered.

"…Good."

If his body was weak—

He would simply make it stronger.

Faster.

Better.

Then—

[New Mission Available]

The screen shifted.

[Mission: Break the Cycle]

Objective: Alter the predetermined path of fate

First Condition: Leave the Hero's party

Reward: Core Stabilization + Skill Unlock

Penalty: System Instability

Kael went still.

"…Leave the party…?"

His grip tightened.

In the past—

Joining the Hero's party had been everything.

Honor.

Purpose.

Hope.

Now—

"…A mistake."

His eyes turned cold.

Everything started there.

The betrayal.

The deaths.

Lina…

"…If I stay…"

He exhaled slowly.

"…Nothing changes."

The answer was obvious.

"I'll leave."

The moment the words left his mouth—

[Condition acknowledged.]

[Mission accepted.]

A faint pulse spread through his chest.

Kael stood up.

No hesitation.

No doubt.

This time—

He wouldn't follow anyone.

He walked to the door.

And stopped.

"…Before that…"

There was one thing he had to confirm.

He turned.

And left the room.

🌿

The training grounds were just as he remembered.

Young knights.

Mages.

Warriors in training.

Voices filled the air.

Laughter.

Clashing steel.

Normal.

Peaceful.

Kael's eyes scanned the area.

Searching.

Then—

He saw her.

Lina.

Alive.

His breath hitched.

She stood near the edge of the field, speaking with another mage. Her long hair swayed gently in the breeze, her expression bright and carefree.

Just like before.

Untouched by tragedy.

"…Lina…"

His voice was barely a whisper.

For a moment—

His vision blurred.

He almost ran to her.

Almost called out her name.

Almost—

Stopped himself.

"…No."

His fists clenched.

Not yet.

If he rushed in blindly—

If he repeated the same choices—

"…I'll lose her again."

His breathing steadied.

He forced himself to think.

Cold.

Calm.

Different.

"…First, I change everything."

Only then—

Would he stand beside her again.

"…Kael?"

His body froze.

That voice.

He turned slowly.

And there—

Standing a few steps behind him—

Was Arden.

The Hero.

Blonde hair.

Confident smile.

Bright eyes full of—

Lies.

"…You look like you've seen a ghost," Arden said lightly.

Kael stared at him.

For a brief moment—

The past overlapped with the present.

The same face.

The same voice.

The man who—

Killed them all.

"…Kael?"

Arden frowned slightly.

"…Are you okay?"

Kael's hand twitched.

He wanted to draw his sword.

To cut him down where he stood.

To erase him—

Right here.

Right now.

But—

"…Too early."

His fingers relaxed.

Slowly.

"…I'm fine," Kael said calmly.

Arden studied him for a moment.

Then smiled.

"Good. I was actually looking for you."

Kael said nothing.

"Everyone's gathering later," Arden continued. "We'll be officially forming the party soon."

The Hero's party.

The beginning of everything.

"…You'll be there, right?"

Kael met his eyes.

And smiled.

A calm.

Polite.

Perfectly normal smile.

"…No."

Arden blinked.

"…What?"

"I won't be joining," Kael said simply.

Silence.

"…You're joking."

"I'm not."

Arden's expression stiffened.

"…Why?"

Kael tilted his head slightly.

"…Does it matter?"

For the first time—

Something flickered in Arden's eyes.

Unease.

"…Of course it matters," he said. "We need you."

Need me?

Kael almost laughed.

"…You'll manage," he replied calmly.

Then—

He turned.

And walked away.

Leaving the Hero behind.

Leaving fate behind.

Behind him—

Arden stood frozen.

His smile had disappeared.

His gaze darkened slightly.

"…Kael…"

Something had changed.

Something he couldn't control.

And that—

Made him uncomfortable.

Kael didn't look back.

As he stepped out of the training grounds—

A new notification appeared.

[Mission Progress Updated]

[Condition 1 Complete: Separation from Hero's Party]

A surge of energy pulsed through his body.

[Reward Granted]

[Skill Unlocked: Core Sense]

Kael's eyes sharpened.

"…Good."

This was only the beginning.

He placed a hand over his chest.

"…Astra…"

His voice was low.

"…Wait for me."

His gaze turned forward.

Cold.

Focused.

"…This time…"

His aura shifted.

"…I'll rewrite everything."
