Chapter 1 - Adam never believed in luck

At twenty-three, Adam's life was a constant string of failures. No job. No money. No prospects. Every attempt to make something of himself had ended in disappointment, leaving him hollow, exhausted, and… hopeless.

And tonight… tonight was the worst of all.

Even his girlfriend—the only person he thought cared—had walked out.

"You're useless, Adam."

Her words pierced him, sharp as shattered glass. He could still hear them echoing in his mind as he trudged along the dimly lit street, the uneven pavement reflecting the cold glow of flickering streetlights.

The rain began to fall, at first a drizzle, then heavier, drumming against his jacket and stinging his face.

Perfect. Just perfect.

He laughed, a hollow, bitter laugh that seemed to vanish into the night.

"Of course… why not?"

His phone vibrated in his pocket, startling him.

A strange notification appeared:

[Unknown App Installed]

Adam frowned, confusion and irritation mixing on his face.

"What the hell…?"

Before he could react, another message appeared, this time accompanied by a cold, metallic voice in his head:

[System Activated]

Adam froze.

The voice echoed inside his skull like it belonged there, resonating deep within his mind:

"Congratulations. You have been selected."

"Selected… for what?" His voice trembled, lost in the pattering rain.

"For evolution."

Silence.

A silence so thick it pressed down on him, heavy and suffocating.

Then came another notification, glaring in white letters on the screen:

[First Mission Assigned]

Survive the next 10 minutes.

Adam staggered back, his stomach dropping.

"…What?"

A shrill, piercing screech split the night.

Metal grinding against asphalt. Tires spinning, screaming in protest. A truck… out of control… barreling toward him.

Adam's heart froze.

"Oh shit—"

BANG!

The world erupted into chaos. Pain, noise, darkness—then silence.

And then, faintly, a notification appeared:

[Mission Completed]

Reward: +1 Strength]

Adam's eyes snapped open.

He was alive. Somehow. The truck had missed—or maybe something else had stopped it.

But everything felt… different.

The rain, the streetlights, even the air itself seemed sharper, heavier, charged with an energy he couldn't comprehend.

A deep, dark feeling stirred inside him—something ancient, hungry, and powerful. He shook his head, trying to dispel it, but the sensation remained, whispering to him, tugging at his thoughts, stirring something he didn't understand.

Then another notification appeared:

[New Objective: Test your strength.]

Target: nearby stray dog.]

Adam blinked. His pulse quickened. "What…?"

Before he could react, a flash of movement caught his eye. A stray dog, its eyes glowing unnaturally in the rain, lunged at him.

Instinctively, Adam felt a surge of power coursing through his veins, raw and alien. He dodged effortlessly, moving faster than he thought possible.

[Power Increase: +1 Agility]

Adam stumbled back, breathing heavily, staring at his hands in disbelief. He didn't recognize them anymore. Something inside him had awakened. Something dark… and alive.

Then he heard footsteps—slow, deliberate, echoing in the empty street.

His heart pounded in his chest. Someone… or something… was watching.

"Who's there?" he demanded, his voice stronger than he felt.

No answer. Only silence… and the cold, watching darkness.

A shadow moved across the street. Too fast, too silent. Adam's instincts screamed at him, urging him to run, but his legs froze.

The streetlight flickered, and for a moment, he saw a figure standing there—tall, indistinct, watching him.

Then the figure vanished.

Adam's chest heaved. He realized, with a shiver, that his life had changed forever.

The system had chosen him. And whatever came next, he could never go back.

His mind raced with questions. Who had selected him? Why him? And what exactly did "evolution" mean?

Before he could ponder further, another notification appeared, more urgent this time:

[Next Task: Survive until sunrise.]

Rewards: Unknown.]

Adam looked up at the sky. The storm raged on, thunder cracking across the heavens. Ten minutes had passed. And he knew, somehow, that the night had only just begun.

Deep inside, something dark smiled. Something that had been waiting for him.

Adam clenched his fists. He had no choice now. He had to survive… or die trying.

And somewhere, far beyond the city lights, the world shifted, watching him, waiting to see what he would become.
