Chapter 1 - Shadows on Rain-Slick Streets

The rain fell in sharp, rhythmic sheets, drumming against the asphalt like a countdown. Streetlights flickered, their halos dissolving into mist. Evan Mercer pulled his coat tighter, the collar brushing against his jaw, and scanned the alley ahead. Somewhere in the darkness, something had waited, watching, killing.

Detective Marla Vey knelt by the body, her gloves slick with rain and blood. "Another one," she muttered, voice grim. "Same pattern as the last two."

Evan crouched, studying the scene. The victim's eyes stared wide, unseeing, but the meticulous placement of wounds told a story only someone like him could read. His mind raced, cataloging, analyzing. The killer left nothing to chance. Nothing.

And yet...

There was something off. Something in the air. Evan felt it before he saw it - a shadow, flitting past the edge of his vision. He turned sharply, but the alley was empty. Only the echoes of footsteps, distant and deliberate.

His heart ticked faster, a pull he couldn't explain. Not fear. Curiosity. Fascination.

Marla's voice cut through his thoughts. "You seeing things, Mercer?"

Evan shook his head, forcing professionalism into his tone. "Just... processing."

Processing was an understatement. The killer's mind was sharp, precise. And Evan wanted to know it. He wanted to trace the logic, follow the pattern, anticipate the next move. Perhaps even stop it before it happened again.

But a nagging thought lingered - a shadow at the edge of reason. Someone had been here, someone watching, studying him as he studied the scene. The hairs on his neck stood on end, a thrill threading through him, unbidden.

He didn't know it yet, but the game had already begun. And the man who would become both his obsession and his undoing was out there, smiling somewhere in the rain.
