Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: The Second Ring

Morning came quietly.

It always did.

Soft light slipped through the curtains, spreading across the room in pale gold streaks. The city outside had already begun its routine—cars moving, distant voices rising, life continuing without pause.

Inside the apartment, everything felt still.

Liora woke slowly, her eyes adjusting to the light as she stared at the ceiling for a moment longer than necessary.

There was no reason for it.

No nightmare. No sound.

Just a feeling she couldn't name.

She exhaled softly and turned to her side, reaching for her phone without thinking.

The screen lit up instantly.

One missed call.

Unknown number.

Her fingers paused.

The same number from last night.

A faint crease formed between her brows.

"That's… persistent," she murmured under her breath.

Most unknown calls came once. Maybe twice.

Not again the next morning.

She stared at the number for a few seconds, debating.

Call back?

Ignore it?

Block it?

Her thumb hovered over the screen—

then moved away.

"No," she said quietly.

It wasn't fear.

Not yet.

Just… discomfort.

By the time she stepped into the kitchen, Adrian was already there.

Of course he was.

He stood by the counter, sleeves rolled again, focused on something simple—coffee, by the look of it. The familiar scent filled the room, grounding, normal.

Unchanged.

"You're awake earlier than usual," he said without turning.

"You're always awake earlier than me."

"That's not an answer."

Liora leaned lightly against the counter, watching him.

"I couldn't sleep well."

That caught his attention.

He glanced at her briefly. "Something bothering you?"

She hesitated.

Then—

"Just a call," she said.

Adrian paused mid-motion.

"What kind of call?"

"Unknown number."

"That's it?"

She nodded, though something about it still lingered in her expression.

"It called again this morning."

That made him turn fully.

"Same number?"

"Yes."

A small silence settled between them.

"Did you answer?" he asked.

"No."

He studied her face for a moment.

Not suspicious.

Just… attentive.

"Probably spam," he said finally.

"That's what I thought."

"But?"

Liora looked away briefly.

"It doesn't feel like it."

Adrian didn't respond immediately.

He wasn't the type to dismiss things quickly.

"Do you want me to check it?" he asked.

She shook her head.

"No, it's fine. I'll just block it."

Simple solution.

Logical.

And yet—

she didn't do it.

The rest of the morning moved forward like nothing had changed.

Breakfast. Small conversations. Quiet routines.

Everything felt normal.

Too normal.

Liora found herself reaching for her phone more often than usual.

Checking it.

Unlocking it.

Locking it again.

No new calls.

That should have been reassuring.

It wasn't.

Later that afternoon, she stepped out alone.

The city air felt lighter than the stillness of the apartment. People moved around her, conversations overlapping, footsteps echoing across the pavement.

It grounded her.

Pulled her out of her thoughts.

"See?" she muttered quietly to herself. "It's nothing."

She walked past familiar places—cafés she had visited before, quiet streets she knew by memory. Everything was exactly as it should be.

Until—

Her phone vibrated.

The sound was soft.

But it cut through everything.

Liora stopped walking.

Slowly—

she pulled her phone out.

The screen lit up.

Incoming call.

Unknown Caller.

Her breath stilled for a second.

It wasn't just the number anymore.

It said it clearly now.

Unknown Caller.

The phone continued vibrating in her hand.

Steady.

Persistent.

Around her, the world continued moving.

No one noticed.

No one cared.

Liora stared at the screen.

Answer.

Decline.

Two simple choices.

Her thumb moved slightly toward the red button—

then stopped.

"…It's just a call," she whispered.

Her heart didn't agree.

The ringing continued.

One second.

Two.

Three.

Without fully deciding—

she pressed green.

The sound stopped instantly.

Silence.

"Hello?" she said.

Nothing.

No voice.

No breathing.

No background sound.

Just silence.

Her grip tightened slightly around the phone.

"Hello?" she repeated, a little firmer this time.

Still nothing.

A faint chill crept up her spine.

"…If this is some kind of joke—"

The line cut.

Call ended.

Liora lowered the phone slowly.

That was it.

No words.

No explanation.

Just silence.

"…Okay," she said quietly, though her voice didn't sound convinced.

She stared at the screen again.

The call log confirmed it.

Same number.

Same unknown.

But now—

it felt different.

Before, it was just a missed call.

Now—

it was something that had reached back.

That evening felt heavier.

Even with Adrian beside her, even with normal conversation filling the room, something had shifted.

"You're distracted," he said.

Liora didn't deny it this time.

"I answered it," she said.

His expression sharpened slightly. "And?"

"…Nothing."

"That's it?"

"Yes."

He frowned slightly.

"Nothing at all?"

"No voice. No sound. Just silence."

That didn't sit right.

"With how persistent it is?" he said. "That doesn't sound like spam."

"I know."

The words came out quieter than before.

Adrian leaned back slightly, thinking.

"Next time it calls," he said, "don't answer."

Liora looked at him.

"Why?"

His gaze held hers steadily.

"Because whoever it is," he said, "wanted you to answer this time."

A small silence followed.

"And next time," he added, "they might actually say something."

Later that night—

Liora sat alone in the dim light of the living room.

Her phone rested on the table in front of her.

She hadn't touched it.

Not for a while.

But she was aware of it.

Constantly.

Watching.

Waiting.

The room was quiet.

Too quiet.

And then—

It rang again.

The sound cut through the silence like something sharp.

Liora froze.

Slowly—

her eyes moved to the screen.

Incoming call.

Unknown Caller.

The name stared back at her.

Unchanging.

Unfamiliar.

But this time—

it didn't feel distant anymore.

It felt closer.

Like it had been waiting.

For her.

The phone kept ringing.

And this time—

Liora didn't reach for it.

She just stared.

As if answering it would change something she wasn't ready to face.

The ringing continued.

Unstopping.

Unforgiving.

And somewhere, deep beneath the quiet of her thoughts—

a single realization began to form.

This wasn't random.

And it wasn't going to stop.
