Chapter 1 - CHAPTER 1

*THE DAY EVERYTHING ENDED*

The smell of garlic and butter filled the small apartment kitchen as Emily Carter stirred the pasta slowly, her movements automatic and tired.

Four years.

Four years of cooking dinners.

Four years of waiting.

Four years of pretending things would get better.

The sound of the front door opening made her pause.

Jason was home.

Emily wiped her hands on a towel and forced a small smile. "You're back early"

Her voice died in her throat.

Jason Reed wasn't alone.

A tall woman with glossy hair and a tight red dress walked in beside him as if she owned the place. Her hand was wrapped comfortably around Jason's arm.

Emily's fingers tightened around the wooden spoon.

This wasn't new.

But it never stopped hurting.

The woman looked Emily up and down with open curiosity. "Jason… who's she?"

Jason didn't even glance toward the kitchen.

"Who she is doesn't matter, baby. Let's go inside."

He chuckled softly, pressing a kiss to the woman's cheek as he guided her toward the bedroom.

Their laughter echoed down the hallway.

Emily stood frozen in the kitchen while the pasta boiled over behind her.

Something inside her finally cracked.

Her whisper trembled in the empty room.

"I can't continue this."

Silence answered her.

For the first time in four years, Emily didn't cry immediately. She didn't scream. She didn't beg.

She simply turned off the stove.

And walked to the bedroom that used to be hers.

The suitcase sat untouched in the closet, covered in dust.

Emily pulled it out slowly and placed it on the bed.

Her hands shook as she began packing clothes, shoes, and the few belongings she could truly call her own.

Every fold of fabric felt like closing a chapter of her life.

Her eyes landed on a framed photograph sitting on the nightstand.

Jason stood behind her in the picture, arms wrapped around her waist, both of them laughing at something outside the camera frame.

It was taken four years ago.

The day they moved in together.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

"I really loved you," she whispered.

Her fingers brushed the glass one last time before she placed the picture back on the table.

She didn't take it with her.

Some memories were meant to stay behind.

Suitcase in hand, Emily walked down the hallway toward the master bedroom.

The door was slightly open.

She didn't want to look.

But she did.

Jason and the woman tangled together on the bed laughing, careless, shameless.

Emily felt something inside her chest go numb.

Her voice came out steady.

"I'm leaving."

Jason turned his head lazily, as if she had just commented on the weather. "What do you mean you're leaving?"

Emily met his eyes. "I'm tired of this relationship."

Jason sat up, completely unbothered. "Oh, really?"

He smirked.

"You have no use here either. You can go if you want. I already found someone to spend my life with."

The woman beside him giggled and snuggled closer.

Jason continued coldly, "I have nothing to do with you anymore. You only wanted my money. I know women like you."

The words sliced deeper than any betrayal.

Emily's lips trembled. "We've dated for four years… and you think I stayed for your money?"

Jason shrugged. "Isn't that obvious?"

Silence filled the room.

Emily straightened her shoulders.

"Well… it's okay," she said quietly. "Just don't miss me one day."

Jason laughed.

But Emily had already turned away.

The evening air felt cold against her tear-stained cheeks as she stepped outside the house.

Her home for four years.

Her heart for four years.

Her mistake for four years.

She stopped at the gate and looked back one last time.

Her voice was barely a whisper.

"Nothing will ever make me step foot in that place again."

With that vow, Emily Carter walked away.

And didn't look back.

A small hotel room became her temporary refuge.

One month.

That was all she could afford.

The first few nights were the hardest. Silence replaced the chaos she had grown used to, and loneliness crept into every corner.

But Emily refused to fall apart.

She needed a job.

She needed a future.

She needed a new life.

A few days later, she stood nervously in front of a small bakery downtown.

The sweet smell of sugar and cinnamon drifted through the open door.

"Good morning," Emily said politely to the woman behind the counter. "Are you hiring?"

The woman studied her for a moment before smiling. "Can you start today?"

Emily blinked in surprise. "Yes. Absolutely."

"Then you're hired."

For the first time in days, hope flickered in her chest.

That evening, Emily returned to her tiny hotel room, exhausted but relieved.

She had survived her first day.

She dropped her bag and kicked off her shoes.

Suddenly, her stomach twisted violently.

A wave of nausea hit her without warning.

"Oh no"

Emily rushed to the bathroom and barely made it to the toilet before vomiting.

Her body trembled as she gripped the sink afterward.

Her reflection stared back at her, pale and shaken.

"Please… don't tell me…"

Her hand slowly moved to her stomach.

"Am I pregnant?"

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and fear.

Emily sat on the edge of the examination bed, fingers twisted together anxiously.

The doctor entered with a gentle smile and a clipboard.

"Miss Carter, congratulations. You're two weeks pregnant."

The words echoed in her ears.

Pregnant.

Jason's baby.

Her heart pounded wildly. For a brief moment, the urge to run back to him surfaced.

He deserved to know.

The baby deserved a father.

But then she remembered his voice.

You have no use here.

Emily clenched her fists.

"I can't go back to him," she whispered. "I'll raise this child alone."

And for the first time, she meant it.

Weeks passed.

Her small belly slowly began to show.

One afternoon, the bakery owner pulled her aside gently.

"Emily… you shouldn't be working this hard in your condition."

Tears filled Emily's eyes. "I need the job."

The woman pressed an envelope into her hands. "Take this. It's extra pay. Go rest and take care of your baby."

Emily broke down crying.

"Thank you… so much."

Life was pushing her forward.

Whether she was ready or not.

And she had no idea…

Her destiny was about to change forever.
