Chapter 87 - WHEN LOVE TURNS QUIET

Steam drifted lazily over the outdoor jacuzzi, blurring the line between the warm water and the crisp night air. Beyond the stone terrace, darkness settled over the gardens, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant pine. The evening breeze skimmed across Lesley's exposed shoulders, cool enough to raise goosebumps, but the heat of the whiskey burning down her throat chased the chill away.

She rotated the crystal tumbler between her fingers, watching the amber liquid circle the glass in slow, hypnotic spirals.

Again.

And again.

The whiskey caught the soft patio lights, scattering gold reflections over the rippling water. It was easier to watch that than to think. Easier than replaying the same memories until they hollowed her out.

Across from her, Athena had been quietly observing for several minutes. Finally, she sighed and reached for the bottle resting on the edge of the jacuzzi.

The whiskey glugged into her glass.

"Hey." Athena leaned back against the stone edge. "You've been like that all night. What's the problem?"

Lesley didn't answer.

The only movement she made was another absent-minded swirl of her drink.

Athena narrowed her eyes.

"Don't tell me it's a girl problem again."

Silence.

Lesley lifted the glass instead, taking a slow sip. The liquor scorched pleasantly against her tongue, but it did nothing to dull the ache lodged beneath her ribs.

Athena let out an exaggerated groan.

"I knew it."

She laughed once, though it carried more curiosity than amusement.

"I thought you two were official now."

Lesley's eyes stayed fixed on the whiskey.

"It didn't go through."

Her voice came out quieter than she intended.

"She... didn't show up at the restaurant."

Athena straightened immediately.

"What?"

Water sloshed softly as she shifted closer.

"Why?"

Lesley drew in a slow breath.

"She said she had something important she needed to attend to."

The explanation had sounded reasonable then.

She'd believed it.

Wanted to believe it.

Athena frowned.

"So... you just let the days slip by without trying again?"

Lesley finally looked at her.

"Of course I tried."

A humorless laugh escaped her.

"I even gave up on the romantic setup. I figured maybe something simple would be better."

She lowered her gaze back to the drink.

"But after that..."

Her fingers tightened around the crystal.

"...she just went cold."

Athena's brows knitted together.

"What do you mean, cold?"

Lesley stared into the whiskey as if the answer waited somewhere beneath its surface.

"It was like she became someone else."

The words tasted bitter.

"At first, I didn't think much of it. Maybe she was exhausted. Busy. Stressed. Whatever reason she gave me, I accepted it."

She paused, swallowing hard.

"But it kept happening."

Every unanswered message.

Every excuse.

Every conversation that ended too quickly.

Every hug Denisse no longer returned.

"I asked if something was wrong."

Her thumb traced the rim of the glass.

"I tried talking to her."

Nothing.

"I tried to be affectionate..."

A faint, painful smile crossed her lips.

"She avoided that too."

The confession lingered between them, swallowed only by the bubbling water.

Athena blew out a slow breath.

"Whoa..."

She rested both arms along the edge of the jacuzzi.

"Why would she suddenly act like that?"

Her eyes searched Lesley's face.

"Did you do something to upset her?"

Lesley's answer came immediately.

"No."

There wasn't even a second of hesitation.

"I didn't do anything."

Athena held her gaze for a long moment before shrugging.

"Maybe that's the problem."

Lesley's eyes lifted.

"What?"

"You didn't do anything."

Athena spoke carefully now.

"Maybe she got tired of waiting."

The words landed harder than any accusation.

For a heartbeat, Lesley forgot to breathe.

Her chest tightened painfully.

Tired... of waiting?

The thought settled deep inside her like a stone.

Had she taken too long?

Had all the times she'd hesitated, choosing patience over certainty, slowly convinced Denisse she wasn't worth fighting for?

Her voice came out barely above a whisper.

"Am I... too late?"

Athena lifted one shoulder, her expression unreadable.

"I don't know."

She took another slow sip of whiskey, letting the silence stretch between them.

"But people don't just go cold for no reason."

A beat passed.

Then Athena added quietly,

"What if it was because of Daphne?"

Lesley's head snapped toward her.

"Daphne?"

The name came out sharper than she intended.

"What do you mean, Daphne?"

Athena held her gaze.

"Maybe Denisse got jealous."

"No."

The answer came instantly.

Too instantly.

"I haven't done anything with Daphne."

Lesley frowned, almost offended by the accusation.

"It's strictly business."

Athena gave her a knowing look.

"That's what you know."

Lesley's expression slowly hardened.

Her voice dropped.

"What if Daphne got to her first?"

The bubbles around them suddenly seemed louder, filling the silence neither of them wanted to acknowledge.

"What if she told her things..."

Athena looked away for a moment, swirling the whiskey in her glass.

Then she finished softly.

"...things that broke her heart."

The image struck Lesley before she could stop it.

Denisse listening.

Believing every word.

Thinking she had been lied to.

Thinking she had never been enough.

Her stomach twisted.

"And what would she even say?"

The question came out quieter than she intended.

But she already knew she didn't want the answer.

Athena shook her head slowly.

"I don't know."

She swirled the whiskey in her glass, watching the amber liquid move in slow circles.

"You know Daphne better than I do."

Lesley's grip tightened around the crystal tumbler until her knuckles blanched white.

Daphne.

Manipulative.

Calculating.

Always smiling like she knew a secret no one else did.

How many conversations had happened behind her back?

How many carefully chosen words had been whispered into Denisse's ears while Lesley remained blissfully unaware?

The thought ignited something hot beneath the ache. Raw, protective anger spread through her chest.

"If she said anything to Denisse..."

Her jaw clenched.

"I swear..."

The words came through gritted teeth.

"I'll never forgive her."

Athena studied her quietly.

Without another word, Athena lifted her glass in a small, silent toast before finishing the whiskey in one long swallow.

The bubbling water continued around them, warm against Lesley's skin.

Yet the night suddenly felt colder.

She stared into the amber liquid still circling inside her glass, her thoughts spiraling with it.

If Daphne had truly crossed that line...

If Denisse had been carrying that pain all this time...

Then Lesley had wasted precious days trying to understand a silence that had never been born from distance at all.

It had been born from heartbreak.
