Chapter 82 - TOMORROW CHANGES EVERYTHING

A thin veil of gray clouds hung over the Sunday afternoon, softening the sunlight until the world seemed wrapped in muted silver. The air carried the scent of rain that hadn't quite decided to fall, cool enough to make the warmth spilling from Stacy's porch feel inviting.

Lesley settled deeper into the cushioned sofa, one leg crossed over the other, perfectly content beneath the shelter of the porch roof. The weather should have matched her mood. It didn't.

She couldn't stop smiling.

Her phone rested lightly in her hands as her thumbs moved across the screen, the conversation flowing as effortlessly as the memories that refused to leave her alone. Every new message made the corners of her lips curl higher. Every pause between replies invited another flash of last night into her mind.

Denisse laughing quietly.

The yacht date.

The thrill of sneaking away while everyone else remained blissfully unaware.

The memory alone was enough to send another wave of warmth through her chest.

Around her, the familiar chaos of the group unfolded in comforting rhythm.

Near the middle of the porch, Zoe crouched beside Baby Sebby, gently talking to him in a singsong voice while pulling the silliest faces she could manage. His wide eyes followed every movement, and every now and then, his tiny mouth twitched into what looked suspiciously like a smile.

Sam joined in without a shred of dignity, slowly bouncing one of Sebby's stuffed toys in front of him. Sebby's gaze remained locked on it while his little arms waved excitedly, his fingers opening and closing as though eager to figure out how to grab it.

"I think somebody likes Mr. Bunny," Zoe said with a grin.

Sebby answered with a happy little coo and an enthusiastic kick of his legs, earning matching smiles from both women.

Honestly, who could resist Baby Sebby?

Across from her, Alexandra seemed oblivious to everything else.

The glow of her laptop reflected faintly against her glasses as her fingers danced across the keyboard with practiced speed. Every so often she'd pause, eyes narrowing in concentration before typing another rapid burst.

Athena had wandered toward the edge of the porch, one arm folded across her waist while the other held her phone to her ear. Her voice drifted in and out with the breeze, calm and professional as she excused herself from the gathering.

Inside the house came the muffled sounds of dishes clinking together.

A few moments later, the front door swung open.

Stacy stepped outside first, balancing a warm smile as she carefully held the door for the maid behind her. Together they carried a large tray filled with steaming teacups, the fragrant aroma of freshly brewed tea immediately weaving through the cool afternoon air.

The porcelain clinked softly as Stacy lowered the tray onto the coffee table.

"There we go." She smiled at everyone. "Your tea's ready."

The announcement was enough to lure Zoe and Sam away from Baby Sebby, who was promptly scooped into the maid's arms. He responded with a tiny pout and a quiet little fuss, his gaze lingering on the two women until the maid gently bounced him in her embrace.

The two women crossed the porch and settled onto the sofa.

Without needing to ask, Sam reached for one of the cups and carried it over to Alexandra.

"Here," she murmured.

Alexandra barely glanced away from her screen.

"Thanks, babe."

Sam simply smiled before sitting beside her.

Lesley didn't move.

She remained comfortably sprawled against the cushions, phone still in hand, completely absorbed in the conversation lighting up her screen.

Another message appeared.

Her smile returned almost instantly.

She typed back.

Then another.

She didn't notice Stacy watching her.

"Can't get enough of her?"

Lesley blinked.

"What?"

She finally looked up from her phone to find Stacy already seated in the single armchair across from them, teacup resting comfortably between both hands. There was amusement dancing openly in her eyes.

"You were just together yesterday. Couldn't even wait a day, huh?"

Heat climbed into Lesley's cheeks before she could stop it.

"Who said I'm talking to Denisse?"

She tried to sound innocent.

She failed spectacularly.

The grin still stretching across her face betrayed her long before anyone else could.

Stacy lifted a brow, the corner of her mouth curling into a smug smile.

"And who said I was talking about Denisse?"

Silence.

A heartbeat.

Then laughter erupted across the porch.

Lesley let out a laugh and shook her head.

"You people never miss a thing."

"Not when you make it that easy," Sam teased before taking a sip of her tea.

Even Alexandra finally looked up from her laptop, a knowing smile tugging at her lips.

At that moment, Athena returned from her phone call and slipped back into the empty seat.

She looked from Stacy's smug expression to Lesley's embarrassed face.

It took her less than a second to understand.

A mischievous smile spread across her face.

"So..." Athena said, reaching for her tea. "Still riding the adrenaline from sneaking off last night?"

Another chorus of laughter rolled through the porch.

Lesley could only laugh with them, shaking her head in surrender.

There was no point denying anything now.

Not when every memory from the night before came rushing back all over again.

The secret smiles.

The quiet escape.

The rush of excitement that had made her pulse race every step of the way.

And Denisse.

Just thinking about her was enough to make Lesley's smile soften into something warmer, quieter.

She lowered her gaze to the phone still resting in her lap as another message lit up the screen.

Her heart answered before she even opened it.

A few quick taps.

Another smile she couldn't quite hide.

The conversation around her drifted on, her friends slipping into easy chatter over tea and pastries while she quietly stole one more moment with Denisse. She knew she was pushing her luck. If she kept smiling at her phone like this, she'd only give them more ammunition.

With a small, amused shake of her head, she locked the screen.

Enough.

The phone landed face down on the coffee table with a soft thud, finally surrendering her full attention to the women gathered around her.

She leaned forward, resting an elbow against one knee while her legs remained crossed.

"I'll officially ask Denisse to be my girlfriend."

Silence.

Not awkward silence.

The kind that came from five people needing a heartbeat to process words they had been waiting weeks to hear.

Then the room erupted.

"Oh, God, finally," Sam blurted, throwing both hands into the air.

"It's long overdue, girl," Zoe added with an exasperated laugh, shaking her head.

A sheepish smile tugged at Lesley's lips as she lowered her gaze into her tea.

"I know..."

The admission came out softer than she'd intended.

She did know.

Every delayed conversation. Every almost. Every excuse she'd hidden behind. Denisse had never pressured her, never demanded labels or promises. She had simply stayed, patient in a way Lesley still couldn't quite understand.

Tomorrow, she would stop making Denisse wait.

Alexandra leaned forward, excitement already sparkling in her eyes.

"So? Have you figured out how you're going to do it?" she asked. "Do you want us to help you plan some grand proposal?"

Before Lesley could answer, Athena snorted.

"Oh, please. We don't have to, Alex."

She took a lazy sip of her drink before grinning wickedly.

"Knowing her? She'll probably ask Denisse without even looking up from the documents on her desk."

The pillow hit Athena square in the shoulder.

"Ow!"

Laughter exploded around the room.

"Shut up," Lesley said, laughing despite herself. "I can be romantic if I want to, you know."

Athena rubbed her shoulder dramatically.

"I'll believe it when I see it."

Stacy lifted her teacup, hiding an amused smile behind the porcelain.

"C'mon, hotshot." She took a careful sip before lowering the cup again. "Let's hear this grand romantic plan of yours."

Lesley's grin widened.

She'd imagined it over and over these past few nights.

"A romantic dinner."

Everyone listened.

"At my restaurant."

She paused just long enough for anticipation to build.

"And I'll cook everything myself."

A chorus of impressed reactions filled the room.

Zoe's eyes widened.

"Wow."

She let out an affectionate laugh.

"That is actually really romantic. Denisse has completely changed you."

"I couldn't agree more," Sam chimed in. "You're officially under Denisse's spell."

Lesley shook her head, trying to hide the warmth spreading across her cheeks.

Maybe she was.

She remembered the woman who had once insisted work always came first. The woman who measured time in meetings, contracts, and deadlines. The woman who would've dismissed candlelit dinners as unnecessary theatrics.

Now she was planning an entire romantic evening around one person.

She lifted her teacup to disguise the smile she couldn't suppress.

Athena pointed at her with unmistakable satisfaction.

"Good luck, bitch."

Her teasing grin softened into something unexpectedly sincere.

"You finally came to your senses."

The room grew quieter.

"You deserve this."

Her eyes flicked toward the others before settling back on Lesley.

"Both of you deserve the happiness... and the certainty."

The words settled deep inside Lesley.

For a moment, nobody joked.

Nobody laughed.

She stared into the amber-colored tea, watching tiny ripples distort her reflection.

Tomorrow.

The word echoed in her mind.

Tomorrow she would stop dancing around what had been obvious for weeks.

Tomorrow she would tell Denisse that she wasn't just the woman she loved.

She was the woman she wanted by her side.

Lesley looked up, a quiet smile resting on her face.

"Yeah," she said softly.

Her voice carried a certainty none of them had heard from her before.

"Tomorrow..."

She let herself imagine Denisse's smile.

"...everything changes."
