Chapter 80 - A BIRTHDAY TO REMEMBER

Lesley had grown up with birthdays like this.

Elegant venues. Tables overflowing with food. Guests dressed in their finest. Family friends, business associates, distant relatives, all gathering to celebrate another year of her life. Her parents had always made sure she and her sister had birthdays worth remembering.

She had long since grown accustomed to it.

The speeches.

The laughter.

The endless stream of greetings and gifts.

They had always been wonderful.

But somehow...

This one felt different.

It wasn't because the resort was more beautiful.

Or because there were more guests than usual.

It was because, for the first time in years, she found herself genuinely enjoying every moment.

Not simply attending her own birthday.

Actually living it.

It didn't take long before her eyes found Denisse among the guests.

Somehow, they always did.

She stood with Alexandra, Sam, Gigi, and her family, laughing at something one of them had said. A moment later, one of Lesley's aunts joined the conversation, followed by her younger cousins.

Denisse welcomed each of them with the same effortless warmth.

She listened.

She laughed.

She teased the children.

She spoke with her relatives as though she'd known them for years instead of only a few hours.

Watching her fit so naturally into the people Lesley loved stirred something quiet inside her chest.

It didn't feel forced.

It didn't even surprise her anymore.

Somehow...

Denisse simply belonged.

Lesley's lips curved into a smile before she realized it.

Who would've thought?

The woman she'd once been tricked into blind dating...

The woman she'd spent weeks arguing with...

The woman who had somehow become both the most infuriating and comforting person in her life...

...was now the one who made this birthday feel unlike any she'd ever had.

She hadn't realized how much she'd wanted Denisse there until she saw her standing among everyone she cared about.

And now she couldn't imagine celebrating without her.

"...don't you think so, Lesley?"

The voice in front of her pulled her back.

She blinked.

"I'm sorry?"

The guest gave her a knowing smile.

"I said the chefs really outdid themselves with the menu."

"Oh."

Lesley smiled apologetically.

"They certainly did."

She lifted her glass and took a small sip, though she barely tasted the drink.

Her eyes drifted back toward Denisse almost immediately.

"...Excuse me."

Lesley turned as her aunt approached, wearing a gentle smile.

"We're heading home now." She wrapped her arms around Lesley in a warm embrace. "Happy birthday again, dear."

"You're leaving already?" Lesley asked as they pulled apart. "Why don't you stay the night at the villa?"

"I wish I could." Her aunt sighed apologetically. "I have an early meeting tomorrow morning."

"I understand."

Lesley squeezed her hand.

"Drive safely."

"We will."

Her aunt smiled.

"You enjoy the rest of your evening."

"I will. Thank you for coming."

After exchanging one last smile, her aunt disappeared into the crowd.

Lesley instinctively looked back toward where Denisse had been standing.

The smile on her face faltered.

The spot was empty.

She frowned slightly.

Her eyes swept across the beach.

The cocktail booth.

The buffet.

The dance floor.

The shoreline.

Nothing.

No familiar white dress.

No warm smile.

No Denisse.

A strange restlessness settled in her chest.

Where did she go?

Her phone vibrated in her hand.

A single notification.

She unlocked the screen.

Denisse:

Yacht dock. 7:00 PM.

Lesley's brows lifted.

She glanced at the time in the corner of the screen.

6:50 PM.

Ten minutes.

Curiosity tugged at her almost immediately.

What was Denisse doing at the dock?

Before she could think too much about it, she slipped her phone back into her pocket.

She turned to the guest she'd been speaking with moments earlier.

"If you'll excuse me..."

After exchanging polite farewells, she stepped away from the crowd.

The music and conversation gradually faded behind her as she followed the wooden path leading toward the yacht dock.

With every step, her curiosity grew.

Whatever Denisse had planned...

She couldn't wait to find out.

The walk to the yacht dock took less than ten minutes.

With every step, the sounds of the party faded farther into the distance until they became nothing more than a soft murmur carried by the evening breeze. The gentle rush of waves against the shore gradually took their place.

By the time Lesley reached the dock, the sky had surrendered completely to twilight.

Rows of yachts bobbed gently against the wooden pier, their lights shimmering across the dark water.

She scanned the area, expecting to find Denisse waiting somewhere near the entrance.

Instead, a man dressed in a tailored black suit stepped forward.

"Ms. Ashford?"

Lesley looked at him curiously before nodding.

"Yes."

The man smiled politely.

"If you'll follow me."

She frowned ever so slightly.

Follow him?

Denisse... what exactly are you planning?

Curiosity outweighed hesitation.

Lesley followed the man down the dock until they stopped before one of the largest yachts moored at the far end.

Even by Ashford standards, it was impressive.

Its sleek white exterior gleamed beneath the dock lights, every polished surface reflecting the moonlight dancing across the sea.

The crew member stepped aside, inviting her aboard.

Lesley climbed onto the yacht, her curiosity growing with every step.

The soft hum of the engines reached her ears.

It wasn't until they climbed to the upper deck that she stopped walking altogether.

Her breath caught.

The deck had been transformed.

Hundreds of warm string lights glowed softly in the evening, casting a golden wash across the polished wood. A path of scattered crimson rose petals led toward an elegantly dressed table set for two, overlooking the endless ocean. Fresh floral arrangements framed the space without overwhelming it, their delicate fragrance blending with the salty sea air.

Everything glowed beneath the moonlit sky. Intimate and beautiful.

Standing at the end of the rose-petal path was Denisse.

She held a bouquet of flowers against her chest, her smile carrying equal parts nervousness and hope.

For a moment...

Lesley simply stared.

No extravagant birthday celebration her parents had ever planned...

No lavish venue...

No expensive gift...

Had prepared her for this.

Slowly, a smile spread across her face.

It grew wider.

And wider.

Until she was certain her cheeks hurt.

The crew member quietly excused himself, leaving them alone.

Denisse crossed the distance between them.

Stopping just in front of her, she offered the bouquet with both hands.

"Happy birthday, Lesley."

Lesley accepted it carefully, her eyes never leaving Denisse's.

"You did all of this..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"For me?"

Denisse smiled.

"Yes."

The single word melted whatever restraint Lesley had left.

Without another thought, she reached for Denisse, closed the distance between them, and captured her lips in a kiss.

Warm.

Gentle.

Filled with gratitude she couldn't put into words.

She smiled against Denisse's lips.

"I love it," she murmured between kisses.

Denisse laughed softly.

"I had a feeling you would."

Lesley kissed her once more before finally pulling back, though only enough to look at her.

"This is..." She shook her head with an incredulous laugh. "I don't even know what to say."

"You don't have to."

Denisse slipped her hand into Lesley's.

"I just wanted tonight to be special."

"It already is."

Denisse's fingers intertwined with hers.

"Come on," she said softly.

She led Lesley toward the table, and Lesley followed without hesitation.

As soon as they were seated, members of the yacht's crew quietly appeared, serving each course with practiced elegance before disappearing just as discreetly, leaving the two of them wrapped in comfortable privacy.

The yacht eased away from the dock.

Almost imperceptibly.

The shoreline slowly drifted farther into the distance, its lights becoming tiny golden specks against the darkness.

Neither of them noticed.

They were too busy talking.

Lesley recounted one amusing conversation after another from the party—how one of her younger cousins had tried to convince everyone she could beat Mr. Ashford at beach volleyball, how one of the executives had accidentally joined the children's relay game, and how Athena somehow managed to turn every family gathering into complete chaos.

Denisse laughed until her cheeks hurt.

She loved seeing Denisse this at ease. The smile came easily, and every laugh seemed a little freer than the last.

Not the ever-capable assistant everyone else knew.

Just...

Denisse.

Time slipped by unnoticed.

By the time dessert arrived, the moon hung high above the ocean, painting a silver path across the water.

A rich chocolate soufflé sat before Lesley.

She had barely taken another bite of her chocolate soufflé when she noticed Denisse smiling at her.

"What?"

Denisse didn't answer.

Instead, she leaned forward.

Lesley's breath caught as Denisse gently brushed her thumb across the corner of her mouth.

The touch lingered for the briefest moment before Denisse pulled back.

"You missed a spot," she said softly.

Realization dawned on Lesley.

She let out a quiet laugh.

"So I did."

Their eyes met.

Neither of them moved.

Warm ambient lights cast a gentle glow around them, softly illuminating Denisse's features. Beneath them, the yacht glided through the calm sea, leaving only the quiet murmur of waves in its wake. Overhead, countless stars stretched across the night sky. For a moment, the world beyond the yacht ceased to exist.

There was only the ocean.

The moonlight.

And Denisse.

When the last of their dessert plates had been cleared away, a comfortable silence settled between them.

The yacht continued its gentle course across the calm sea, the waves lapping softly against the hull.

Denisse rose from her chair first.

She stepped around the table and extended a hand toward Lesley.

A playful smile curved her lips.

"Of course," she said, "a romantic dinner date isn't complete without a romantic dance, don't you think?"

Lesley laughed, shaking her head as she slipped her hand into Denisse's.

"You really never run out of surprises, do you?"

"I try."

Denisse led her toward the open deck where crimson rose petals still scattered the polished floor.

The ocean stretched endlessly around them, the night cool against their skin.

Just as they came to a stop, the gentle strains of a violin drifted through the air.

Lesley blinked.

She turned toward the sound.

A few musicians stood quietly near the opposite end of the deck, almost hidden beneath the warm glow of the yacht's lights. Their bows glided effortlessly across the strings, filling the night with a melody so soft and romantic that it seemed to melt into the rhythm of the sea itself.

Lesley looked back at Denisse in disbelief.

"You planned this too?"

Denisse answered with nothing more than an innocent smile.

Lesley couldn't help but laugh.

Unbelievable.

Denisse stepped closer.

Instinctively, Lesley's hands settled at Denisse's waist.

Denisse's arms slipped around the back of her neck, drawing them together until only a breath separated them.

The music wrapped gently around them.

They began to sway.

Slowly.

Neither of them cared about keeping perfect rhythm.

They simply moved together.

The scent of Denisse's perfume lingered between them, blending with the cool sea breeze.

Lesley rested her forehead against Denisse's.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time that day...

Everything else disappeared.

No guests.

No expectations.

No responsibilities.

Only the steady melody of the violins.

The gentle rocking of the yacht.

And Denisse.

Minutes passed in comfortable silence, neither of them feeling the need to fill it with words.

Finally, Lesley opened her eyes.

"Thank you, Denisse."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

"Thank you for making my birthday so special."

Denisse's smile was soft enough to make Lesley's heart ache.

"Anything for you."

Emotion welled inside her chest.

Before she could think better of it, Lesley cupped Denisse's face and kissed her.

Slowly.

Tenderly.

She savored every second, every gentle brush of their lips, as though committing the moment to memory.

The kiss carried everything her heart had yet to say—gratitude, comfort, longing, and the quiet happiness Denisse had brought into her life without ever asking for anything in return.

When they finally parted, Lesley lingered close enough to feel Denisse's breath against her skin.

She smiled.

Denisse looked into her eyes, her expression soft, almost vulnerable.

"Lesley..."

Something in the way Denisse said her name made Lesley's heart skip.

"I love—"

Lesley's gaze shifted beyond Denisse's shoulder.

The first spark climbed into the night sky.

Her eyes widened.

"Oh."

A smile tugged at her lips as she tightened her hold on Denisse's hand.

"Come here."

Without waiting for an answer, she gently guided Denisse toward the yacht's railing.

"What is it?" Denisse asked, laughing softly as she followed.

"Look."

A second later, a brilliant burst of gold blossomed overhead, followed by another in deep crimson.

Then blue.

Silver.

Violet.

The darkness above the ocean erupted into dazzling color, each explosion reflected across the calm water below.

Denisse's eyes lit up with childlike wonder.

"Wow..."

She looked up, unable to hide the smile spreading across her face.

"They're beautiful."

Lesley smiled.

"Yeah… So beautiful."

But she wasn't watching the fireworks.

Her gaze never left the woman standing beside her.

The bursts of color painted fleeting shades of gold, blue, and crimson across Denisse's face, illuminating the quiet joy in her eyes.

Lesley found herself smiling even wider.

The fireworks would end in a few minutes.

The music would fade.

The yacht would return to shore.

But this moment...

This one, she knew she'd remember for the rest of her life.

The last burst of fireworks faded into the night, leaving only a trail of smoke drifting across the dark sky.

For a few moments, neither of them spoke.

The yacht continued its slow glide toward the dock, the distant lights of the resort growing brighter with every passing second.

Soon, the gentle bump against the pier signaled their return.

Denisse turned to face her, a teasing smile already tugging at the corners of her lips.

"Meet me in my room in ten minutes."

Lesley's brows lifted.

"For your second birthday gift."

She blinked.

"Wait..." A laugh escaped her. "There's more?"

Denisse only smiled, looking far too pleased with herself.

"I'll see you in ten."

Before Lesley could ask another question, Denisse gave her hand a gentle squeeze, then turned and made her way toward the gangway.

Lesley watched her disappear down the dock, a smile lingering on her own lips.

She shook her head, letting out another quiet laugh.

What other surprise do you have up your sleeve, Denisse?

Whatever it was...

She already couldn't wait.
