Chapter 72 - MORE THAN A MORNING

Sunlight spilled through the curtains in thin golden ribbons, warming the bedroom with the gentle promise of a lazy Saturday morning. Another relentless work week had finally come to an end. Lesley lay buried beneath the blankets, cocooned in comfort. The mattress cradled her body, and the distant sounds outside blended into a peaceful hum. No alarms. No schedules. No reason to leave the warmth of the bed.

For once, she intended to enjoy every second of it.

A soft pressure touched her lips.

Lesley's brow twitched.

Another heartbeat passed before her sleepy mind caught up with reality. The kiss lingered just long enough to pull her halfway from her dreams.

"Wake up, sleepyhead."

Denisse's voice drifted through the haze, warm and teasing.

"Hmm."

Lesley stubbornly kept her eyes shut. If she didn't open them, maybe she could pretend she was still asleep. Maybe Denisse would let her stay in bed for another hour.

A foolish hope.

The mattress dipped beside her, followed by the familiar sensation of Denisse climbing onto the bed. Moments later, her weight settled comfortably on top of Lesley.

A smile tugged at Lesley's lips despite herself.

"Don't want to wake up?" Denisse asked.

Before Lesley could form a proper answer, ten mischievous fingers found her sides.

The attack was immediate.

"Hey—!"

A startled laugh burst from her chest as she twisted beneath the blankets. Her eyes flew open to find Denisse grinning down at her, completely unrepentant.

"Denisse!"

"No?" Denisse asked innocently, continuing her assault. "You wanted to keep sleeping, right?"

Lesley squirmed helplessly, trying to catch Denisse's wrists while laughter stole her breath. Every time she thought she'd escaped, another tickle sent her writhing across the mattress.

"Stop—stop!" she managed between laughs. "Please!"

Denisse only laughed harder.

The room filled with the sound of their laughter, bright and carefree. Sunlight danced across Denisse's dark hair, and her eyes sparkled with amusement as she watched Lesley struggle.

Finally, gasping for air, Lesley raised both hands in surrender.

"No, please. I'm awake. Completely awake."

Denisse paused.

For a moment, she simply sat there, staring down at her as if evaluating whether she was telling the truth.

Lesley met her gaze, still breathless, her cheeks warm from laughing.

Satisfied, Denisse finally withdrew her hands.

"Good." Her stomach gave a dramatic growl, earning a grin from both of them. "Let's have breakfast. I'm starving already."

Lesley laughed softly and pushed herself upright. Even with her hair a mess and her heartbeat still recovering, she couldn't help smiling at the sight of Denisse sitting triumphantly on the bed.

"Yes, ma'am."

She snapped a playful salute.

Denisse rolled her eyes, though the smile tugging at her lips betrayed her amusement.

And just like that, the peaceful Saturday morning became something even better.

The scent of butter and cinnamon filled the kitchen, warm and inviting as it drifted through the morning air.

Lesley flipped a slice of French toast with practiced ease, watching the golden surface sizzle as it met the heat of the pan. Sunlight streamed through the windows, painting pale rectangles across the countertop. It was quiet except for the soft crackle of cooking butter and the occasional clink of dishes.

A pair of arms suddenly slipped around her waist.

Lesley smiled before she even turned her head.

"Hmm." Denisse's voice was low and sleepy. "It smells amazing."

Her chin settled comfortably on Lesley's shoulder, and the familiar weight of her against Lesley's back sent a pleasant warmth through her chest.

Lesley leaned slightly into her embrace.

"Not as amazing as you smell."

She turned just enough to press a kiss to Denisse's forehead.

Denisse let out a small laugh.

"How can you be this perfect?"

Before Lesley could answer, Denisse stole a piece of French toast from the plate beside the stove.

"Hey."

Ignoring her entirely, Denisse took a bite, then held the remaining piece toward Lesley's mouth.

Lesley obediently leaned forward and bit into it.

Crisp edges. Soft center. Just enough cinnamon.

Perfect.

"Beautiful," Denisse said, stealing another piece of toast from the plate.

Lesley shook her head, already expecting the rest.

"Sexy. Charming. Rich."

A laugh threatened to escape her.

There it is.

Denisse pointed the half-eaten toast at her.

"And you can cook."

Lesley grinned.

"What can I say? You're pretty damn lucky."

She expected a sarcastic comeback.

A dramatic eye roll.

Something.

Instead, Denisse's lips curved into a small smile.

"Surely am."

The words were simple.

Casual, even.

Yet something about the way she said them made Lesley's breath catch.

For a second, she forgot about the toast sizzling behind her.

Forgot about breakfast.

Forgot about everything except the woman standing in beside her.

Denisse wasn't laughing.

Wasn't teasing.

She looked completely sincere.

And that did something dangerous to Lesley's heart.

A strange warmth spread through her chest, settling somewhere beneath her ribs.

She had heard people compliment her before.

Too many times to count.

Beautiful.

Successful.

Smart.

People loved attaching labels to her.

Most of them slid right off without leaving a mark.

But hearing Denisse say she was lucky?

That was different.

Because Denisse knew her.

Not the version people saw in magazines or boardrooms.

Not the carefully polished image she showed the world.

Denisse knew the stubborn, exhausted, occasionally insufferable woman behind all of that.

And somehow she still looked at her like she was something precious.

Lesley had to look away first.

A smile tugged at her lips as she turned her attention back to the stove.

The French toast suddenly seemed very interesting.

Denisse released her and moved toward the dining table, already gathering plates and utensils.

Yet those two simple words lingered behind.

Surely am.

Lesley's hand paused on the spatula.

Something tightened unexpectedly inside her chest.

You do?

The thought appeared before she could stop it.

For a brief moment, she simply watched Denisse move around the kitchen. The way she hummed to herself. The way she absentmindedly tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear. The way she looked completely at home here.

A smile slowly found its way onto Lesley's lips.

Maybe she really do.

The thought settled warmly inside her.

She turned off the stove and gathered the food before joining Denisse at the table.

Together they finished setting everything out.

It wasn't anything extravagant.

Just French toast, egg, fruit, juice, and each other's company.

But somehow it felt like more.

By the time they sat down, the morning had settled into a comfortable rhythm.

They shared bites from each other's plates.

Stole food without permission.

Argued over who had gotten the better slice.

The kind of small intimacy that had become second nature between them.

Lesley found herself watching Denisse more than she watched her own breakfast.

A thought she'd been sitting on all morning finally surfaced.

"Hmm. Have you looked at my schedule today?"

Denisse looked up from her glass.

"Not yet. Why?"

Instead of answering, Lesley simply smiled.

"Check it."

There must have been something in her expression because Denisse narrowed her eyes suspiciously before reaching for the tablet resting nearby.

Lesley watched eagerly as she unlocked it.

A few seconds passed.

Then Denisse froze.

Every appointment.

Every commitment.

Every plan.

Gone.

The entire day had been cleared.

For one person.

Slowly, Denisse lifted her gaze.

Lesley couldn't stop smiling.

"You have me all day today."

For a moment, Denisse simply stared at her.

Then she set the tablet aside.

"And who said I wanted to spend my whole day with you, Ms. Lesley Nicole Ashford?"

One eyebrow lifted playfully.

Lesley laughed.

The challenge in Denisse's eyes was impossible to resist.

"You can choose wherever you want to go."

She leaned forward slightly.

"And whatever you want to do."

Immediately, Lesley saw it.

That spark.

That unmistakable glint lighting up Denisse's eyes.

"Really?"

Her excitement escaped before she could hide it.

"So we're going on a date?"

The question escaped her without hesitation.

Then Denisse froze for the briefest moment.

Lesley caught the flicker of self-consciousness that crossed her face.

"I mean—"

Her voice softened, the excitement still impossible to completely hide.

As if she'd suddenly realized she'd revealed a little too much.

"Yes."

The answer left Lesley's mouth before she even thought about it.

Both of them went still.

A strange warmth spread through her chest.

Because she hadn't hesitated.

Not even for a second.

"Yes," she repeated, smiling. "We're going on a date today."

The word lingered between them.

Date.

Not dinner.

Not coffee.

Not errands disguised as quality time.

Not another outing they both secretly treated as something more while pretending otherwise.

A date.

Officially.

Somehow, that single word changed everything.

They'd already shared countless moments together.

Late-night dinners.

Trying new coffee shops.

Weekend spa appointments.

Long drives with no destination.

But neither of them had ever called those moments what they truly were.

This time was different.

This time there was no pretending.

No dancing around it.

No hiding behind technicalities.

They both wanted it to be a date.

And as Lesley watched the happiness bloom across Denisse's face, she realized that might be the thing she was looking forward to most.

Not where they would go.

Not what they would do.

Just the simple fact that, for the first time, they were finally calling it what it was.
