Chapter 2 - Chapter 2 — The Thing Beneath the Earth

Darkness pressed in from all sides.

Shen Luo leaned against the cold stone wall, chest rising unevenly. Every breath burned. Every bone felt like it had been shattered and poorly put back together.

"…System?" he muttered hoarsely.

No response.

"Great," he coughed. "Hallucinating before death. At least make it useful."

Silence.

Then—

> "Vital signs stabilizing."

> "Host has accepted existence."

> "Heavenfall System activated."

A faint, translucent light flickered before his eyes—like a crack in reality itself.

Shen Luo stared.

"…So I'm not dead."

> "Correction: You were at 92% probability of death."

"Ah," he nodded weakly. "So I'm *almost* dead. That's comforting."

---

### **System Interface**

A strange panel formed in his vision:

**Host:** Shen Luo

**Cultivation:** Mortal (Incomplete Qi Condensation)

**Bloodline:** Sealed (Fragmented)

**Karma Threads:** 0

**Current Directive:**

→ Survive the underground domain

**Optional Task:**

→ Consume unknown spiritual essence

**Warning:**

→ High risk of death

**Reward:**

→ Breakthrough probability +70%

---

Shen Luo blinked.

Then he laughed quietly.

"There it is… the catch."

High risk.

Always high risk.

"Do nothing, I die slowly. Do something… I might die faster."

He pushed himself up, leaning against the wall.

"…Guess I'll choose the more interesting option."

---

### **The Underground Chamber**

As his eyes adjusted, the darkness revealed shapes.

Ruins.

Ancient ones.

Broken pillars covered in symbols he couldn't understand.

And at the center—

A pool.

Black.

Still.

Like liquid night.

---

Shen Luo swallowed.

"That doesn't look safe."

> "Correction: Extremely unsafe."

"Good," he sighed. "We agree."

---

He took a step forward.

Then stopped.

"…Wait."

His gaze shifted.

Bones.

Scattered around the pool.

Human bones.

Not old.

Not ancient.

Recent.

---

"So someone fell here before me…" he whispered.

"And they all chose wrong."

---

The system flickered again:

> "Observation: Host fear level elevated."

> "Suggestion: Retreat."

Shen Luo raised an eyebrow.

"You just told me to consume it."

> "Correction: Optional task."

"…You're enjoying this, aren't you?"

No answer.

---

He walked closer.

Each step heavier than the last.

The air grew colder.

Denser.

Like something unseen was watching him.

---

Then—

The surface of the black pool rippled.

Without wind.

Without reason.

---

Shen Luo froze.

"…That's new."

A faint whisper echoed—not in his ears, but directly in his mind.

> "Come…"

His expression changed.

The humor vanished.

---

"…No."

He stepped back immediately.

"Anything that says 'come' in a place like this is definitely trying to kill me."

---

Silence.

Then—

The system pulsed.

> "New Directive Issued."

> "Consume or be consumed."

---

"…That's not a choice," Shen Luo said flatly.

> "Correct."

---

For a long moment, he stood there.

Thinking.

Calculating.

---

Then he looked at the bones again.

"…They hesitated," he murmured.

"They tried to understand."

"They tried to be careful."

He exhaled slowly.

"And they died anyway."

---

A faint smile returned.

But this time—

It wasn't light.

---

"Fine."

"If death is certain…"

He stepped forward.

"…I might as well choose how."

---

### **The First Step Into Darkness**

The moment his hand touched the black liquid—

Pain exploded.

Not outside.

Inside.

---

It felt like his blood was boiling.

Like something was crawling through his veins.

Shen Luo collapsed, body convulsing.

A scream tore out of him—

Raw.

Broken.

---

> "Warning: Foreign energy invading."

> "Bloodline seal reacting."

> "Conflict detected."

---

Images flashed.

Endless skies.

Shattered stars.

A figure standing against something vast—

And losing.

---

"GET OUT—!" Shen Luo roared, slamming his fist into the ground.

Cracks spread beneath him.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

But his eyes—

Burned.

---

> "Host resistance detected."

> "Karma Thread formed."

---

The black liquid surged.

Trying to consume him.

Erase him.

---

But Shen Luo—

Didn't let go.

---

"You think…" he gasped, trembling violently,

"…you're the only thing that can devour?"

---

Something changed.

Subtle.

But terrifying.

---

The black liquid—

Paused.

---

Then—

It began flowing *into* him.

---

> "Condition met."

> "Host devours forbidden essence."

> "Reward granted."

---

A violent shockwave burst from his body.

The underground chamber trembled.

Dust fell from above.

---

Shen Luo collapsed.

Still.

Silent.

---

Then—

His fingers twitched.

---

Slowly…

He sat up.

---

His aura—

Different.

---

"Qi Condensation…"

He looked at his trembling hands.

Then clenched them.

"…Second level."

---

A low laugh escaped him.

Not loud.

Not wild.

But cold.

---

"So this is power…"

---

Behind him—

The pool was gone.

Completely.

As if it had never existed.

---

Only one thing remained.

At the center of the chamber.

Half-buried in stone.

---

A black fragment.

Beating.

Like a heart.

---

The system flickered one last time:

> "New Item Detected."

> "Unknown Origin."

> "Danger Level: Extreme."

---

Shen Luo stared at it.

Long.

Silent.

---

Then he smiled.

---

"…Of course."
