She lifted her head slightly and pressed her hot lips to his for a fleeting moment, a kiss that tasted of possession and temporary peace.
— "Tomorrow is the weekend," she said, returning to her previous position, pressed tightly against him. "The Baron's auction. Do you have plans?"
— "Some of the stock... I expect people will fight over it, given how rare and obscene it is," he said with the bluntness of a man who saw no reason to hide things from a woman who had just shared his bed. "And maybe... I'll pick up something that catches my eye in turn. Something to enjoy before I sell it."
He reflexively crushed the cigarette into the ashtray.
— "I'll be back in a moment. I need water."
He withdrew from the bed in a slow, calculated move, trying not to wake her fully from her daze. He grabbed his robe from the chair and put it on in the dark, guided by memory rather than sight, and walked out, leaving her in the midst of the scent of sex and smoke.

He looked at her for a moment. Then he moved to the shelf and brought down the pitcher. He poured into a small cup and placed it before her on the low kitchen counter.
She took it with both small hands and began to drink.
She did not drink hurriedly. She drank with total focus—the cup between her palms, her eyes looking forward, swallow after swallow with the rhythm of a creature giving a single action its full attention. When she finished, she set the cup on the counter and remained with a white milk mustache on her upper lip.

He led her into the room. She gestured toward the corner where a blanket was folded on the floor. She did not go to the bed.

Kaelan arrived early, as was his habit—the early arrival saw who came and read the room before the characters filled it and made reading difficult.

Not the plains elves Kaelan had brought for Warwick—these were shorter, heavier, with gray skin that under the auction lights appeared silver but of a colder shade. The male was in his thirties, his white hair not from age but nature ; the female was at least ten years younger. A merchant from one of the cities raised his hand. Then a noble without insignia. The creature was the size of a large man, but its proportions were all wrong—limbs longer than they should be, a head smaller than its body warranted, skin partially translucent beneath which a network of veins in deep blue moved with a rhythm unlike that of any known living body.
The cold air that accompanied the cage drifted through the room.
"This one will not sell today," Orin murmured behind Kaelan.
"It will sell," Kaelan murmured without turning. "The collectors will fight over it once they realize it has never been offered at any documented auction before."
Kaelan was right. The first collector raised his hand when the caller started at fifteen hundred. Then the second. Then the third. The price rose with the speed of something in which competition had ignited—three thousand, four, four thousand eight hundred. It stopped at five thousand one hundred with the second collector—a bald man with a monocle magnifying lens and hands that never stilled.
Kaelan did not raise his hand.
The third lot : three deep dwarves from an abandoned mine in the east.
Here Kaelan raised his hand.
Deep dwarves were rare, but their market was clear—mine owners and operators of deep-earth installations paid well for creatures who could work in conditions that killed men. Short, with dark brown skin like dry clay, large eyes suited to places without light, four fingers on each hand, all of them possessed of strength disproportionate to their size.
The bidding started at five hundred each.
Kaelan offered two hundred sixty for all three.
"Two hundred eighty each," the caller responded after picking up a signal from the other side.
"Two hundred ninety for all three," Kaelan said.
A soft laugh from some of the attendees—this was not the usual manner of negotiation in this hall.
But the caller turned to the other side. No offers.
"Accepted."
Orin behind him made a faint sound that resembled surprise.
The fourth lot was the one Kaelan had been waiting for.
It was brought in covered in black cloth.
This alone silenced the murmurs of the room.
The caller removed the cloth with deliberate slowness—six bundles of dried magical herbs tied with threads of living silver, silver that moved with constant slowness for no mechanical reason, winding and unwinding and rewinding with the rhythm of something breathing.
Nerian herb—one of the rarest materials in the craft of magic. Its properties in magical dealings were countless—every book that mentioned it gave a different use, because it responded to the type of magic that approached it rather than to a single fixed kind.
The room stirred.
The two nobles without insignia adjusted their posture in their chairs. The three collectors leaned forward. Even the man in the far corner, who had not moved throughout the auction, moved—a slight tilt forward, a change in the angle of his body.
Kaelan closed his journal.

Kaelan turned for the first time in the auction fully to look at the man.
Past fifty. A face that resembled the face of a man shaped by decisions rather than events—every feature the result of deliberate choice, even the lines. Clothes without insignia, without ornament, a single continuous color, fabric that cost much because it appeared effortless. And the hand he had raised was not the hand of a man bidding—it was the hand of a man placing things where they belonged.
"Six thousand," Kaelan said.
"Six thousand five hundred."
The room made its particular silence when only two bidders remained.
"Seven," Kaelan said.
The man paused. Three seconds—not hesitation, but calculation.
"Seven thousand five hundred."
Kaelan looked at the Nerian herb on the platform. The living silver wound and unwound in its constant rhythm. He thought of the specialists in magic he intended to summon to examine the girl. He thought of what he might need if she was what he suspected she might be.
"Eight," he said.
The man in the corner looked at him for a moment. Then he leaned back in his chair and turned his gaze forward.
It was over.
When the auction closed and the attendees dispersed, the man from the corner approached him.
Up close, additional details : his hands were clean with unusual care, clean in a manner where the cleanliness appeared to have been effortful. And his eyes—gray, in a shade that resembled the color of Kaelan's own eyes, but a colder degree.
"Solt," he said. Not a question.
"Yes," Kaelan said.
"I have heard your name often," the man said. "My name is Eldan Voss."
The name needed no introduction—who in this field had not heard the name Voss ? Former advisor to three emperors, collector of magical materials with a stock said to surpass the archives of certain temples, a man who appeared in places before important things happened there.
"Voss," Kaelan said, in the tone of one registering, not admiring.
"Nerian herb," Voss said. A glance toward the lot that Kaelan's servants were now carrying in his box. "I wonder—why does a slave trader need this kind of material ?"
Kaelan looked at him with the calm of one not surprised by intelligent questions and not obliged to answer them.
"And Nerian herb—why does a retired advisor need it ?" he said.
Voss smiled a small, measured smile.
"Retired," he repeated the word as one repeats a joke one appreciates. "Perhaps we will speak soon, Solt."
He turned and left with the same quietness with which he had come.
Orin approached Kaelan directly when Voss moved away.
"Who was that ?"
"Eldan Voss."
A silence. Then :
"You are gathering trouble with remarkable efficiency on this trip."
"A hidden talent," Kaelan said, heading toward the exit.
In the wagon returning to his wing of the manor, the box beside him and the Nerian herb inside it with the living silver still winding and unwinding in its darkness, Kaelan thought of the small child in the corner with her milk mustache and her wide eyes that said nothing and said everything.
And of Voss, who appeared in places before important things happened there.
And of his question, which had not been a question but an observation : "Why does a slave trader need this kind of material ?"
He leaned his head against the wooden wall of the wagon.
The true answer—which he would not say to anyone, not even to himself with full clarity yet—was : I do not know what is in my box. But something knows that I need to prepare.
And preparation had always been cheaper than consequences.
