Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Escape Through Carnage

Lin Xiao stood amid the shattered remains of the great hall, his body a canvas of blood and bruises. The elder's next strike came hurtling toward him like a storm of pure qi energy. It was a fist wrapped in crackling lightning that could have split a boulder in two. But Lin Xiao did not flinch. Defiant Overdrive still burned through his veins, multiplying every ounce of his strength tenfold. Time seemed to slow around him. He could see the individual sparks dancing along the elder's knuckles. He could hear the panicked breaths of the guards scrambling for position behind him.

He met the blow head-on. His fist collided with the elder's in a thunderous crash that sent shock waves rippling through the air. Stone tiles beneath their feet exploded upward in a shower of debris. Pain lanced up Lin Xiao's arm, but the system drank it in greedily. His health bar dipped another notch to three percent. Another twenty Defiance Points flooded into his reserves. The numbers ticked up in his mind like a cruel reward for refusing to die.

"How could you?" Elder Lin Zhen roared. His face twisted with rage and disbelief. This was supposed to be a simple execution of a worthless young master. Instead, the boy fought like a demon possessed. The elder pulled back and unleashed a barrage of palm strikes, each one laced with enough force to pulverize bones. Lin Xiao dodged the first two with unnatural speed. The third caught him square in the chest. Ribs cracked. Air exploded from his lungs. Health plunged to two percent. Forty more points earned. The backlash from Overdrive was now building a heavy pressure behind his eyes, but he pushed it aside. He had to farm every last drop of this power.

Around them, the hall had become a battlefield of chaos. Torches lay scattered on the floor, their flames licking at overturned tables and silk banners. Clan guards shouted orders that dissolved into screams as Lin Xiao blurred through their ranks. He grabbed one man by the collar and hurled him into two others. They tumbled like bowling pins. Another guard swung a heavy iron mace. Lin Xiao caught the weapon mid-swing, twisted it from the man's grip, and brought it down on his skull with a sickening crunch. Blood sprayed across the polished stone. The system chimed softly in his head.

[Defiance Points: +15. Total: 1,035.]

Lin Xiao laughed. It was a raw, guttural sound that cut through the noise like a blade. "Is this all your precious Lin Clan has?" he shouted. His voice echoed off the high ceilings. "A bunch of cowards hiding behind an old man?"

Cousin Lin Feng had recovered from the earlier blow and now circled to the side, sword drawn. His face was pale with fury and a hint of fear. "You freak," he snarled. "Whatever demon has possessed you ends here." He lunged forward, sword flashing in a deadly arc aimed at Lin Xiao's throat.

Lin Xiao activated nothing extra. He wanted the points. He let the blade graze his shoulder. Steel bit deep into flesh. Blood welled up hot and immediate. Health dropped to one percent. The system rewarded him again. Another thirty points. His vision flashed red at the edges, but the Overdrive kept him moving. He stepped inside Lin Feng's guard, grabbed the cousin's wrist, and snapped it with a sharp twist. The sword clattered to the floor. Lin Feng screamed.

"You always looked down on me," Lin Xiao growled, voice low and heavy with the weight of two lifetimes of betrayal. "Called me trash. Wasted my resources. Now look at you." He drove his knee into Lin Feng's stomach. The cousin doubled over. Lin Xiao followed with an elbow to the jaw that sent teeth flying. Blood and spit mixed on the floor. Guards tried to intervene, but Lin Xiao spun and kicked the nearest one so hard the man flew backward into a pillar and did not rise.

Elder Lin Zhen saw his chance. He channeled more qi into a technique that made the air hum. "Heavenly Palm of Suppression," he intoned. A massive hand of glowing energy formed above Lin Xiao and slammed downward. The pressure alone crushed the remaining tables to splinters. Lin Xiao looked up, eyes burning. He raised both arms and met the palm with everything the Overdrive gave him. The collision was deafening. Cracks spiderwebbed across the ceiling. Dust rained down. His health teetered on the edge of zero for a heartbeat. The system poured in another fifty points for surviving the brink.

[Defiant Overdrive duration: 12 seconds remaining.]

The backlash hit like a hammer to the skull. Lin Xiao's multiplied stats began to fade. Pain returned in full force. Every cut, every bruise screamed for attention. But he was not done. He dropped low, scooped up Lin Feng's fallen sword, and drove it straight through his cousin's chest. The blade sank to the hilt. Lin Feng's eyes widened in shock. Blood bubbled from his lips. He tried to speak, but only a wet gurgle came out.

"First blood of many," Lin Xiao said quietly. He twisted the sword and yanked it free. The cousin crumpled to the floor, dead before he hit the stone. The clan members watching from the edges of the hall gasped in horror. This was no longer an execution. This was a slaughter.

Elder Lin Zhen howled with fury. "Kill him! All of you! Do not let the traitor escape!" More guards poured in from side doors. At least twenty fresh ones, armed with spears and qi-infused blades. They formed a circle around Lin Xiao. The elder floated upward slightly, preparing another devastating strike.

Lin Xiao's Overdrive timer hit zero. The power drained away, leaving him feeling hollow and exhausted. But the points he had earned burned bright in his system panel. Over a thousand now. Enough to change everything. He opened the shop interface with a thought. A simple list appeared in his vision.

[Defiance Shop]

- Minor Healing Pill: 200 DP (restores 30% health, no cooldown)

- Basic Qi Boost: 150 DP (temporary +2 to all stats for 10 minutes)

- Defiance Emperor Bloodline Fragment: 800 DP (partial unlock, requires more later)

He did not hesitate. He bought the healing pill and slammed it into his mouth. The taste was bitter, like ash and iron. Warmth spread through his body instantly. Health climbed back to thirty-five percent. Bruises faded. The worst of the bleeding stopped. He still hurt everywhere, but he could move without collapsing.

The guards charged as one. Spears thrust forward. Lin Xiao spun between them like a whirlwind of death. He used the stolen sword with brutal efficiency. One thrust pierced a guard's throat. Another slash opened a belly. Blood painted the floor in wide arcs. He took hits deliberately when he could. A spear tip raked across his back. Health dipped to twenty-eight percent. Fifteen more points. A fist caught him in the jaw. Another ten points. Every strike that did not kill him made him stronger.

Elder Lin Zhen descended like a wrathful god. His palm strike caught Lin Xiao off guard this time. The blow lifted him off his feet and sent him crashing through a wooden door at the far end of the hall. He tumbled into a narrow corridor lined with iron-barred cells. This was the clan prison wing, where they kept traitors and debtors before execution. Torches sputtered in wall sconces. The air smelled of mildew and old blood.

Lin Xiao rolled to his feet, coughing. His health sat at eighteen percent again. Points kept coming. The system voice spoke calmly in his mind.

[Daily Quest update: Survive the next hour. Progress: 22 minutes elapsed. Additional 300 DP available if health reaches under 5 percent again during escape.]

He had no time to rest. Footsteps thundered behind him. Elder Lin Zhen and the remaining guards burst into the corridor. "There is no escape, boy," the elder snarled. "The Lin Clan walls are high. The gates are sealed. You will die here like the dog you are."

Lin Xiao wiped blood from his mouth with the back of his hand. "Dogs bite back," he said. He charged forward instead of retreating. The narrow space worked in his favor. Guards could not surround him easily. He slashed low, hamstringing two men in one motion. They fell screaming. He leaped over them and drove his shoulder into the next guard's chest. Ribs snapped. The man flew backward into Elder Lin Zhen, buying Lin Xiao precious seconds.

He ran deeper into the prison. Cells flashed past on both sides. Some held ragged prisoners who stared out with wide eyes. One old man in chains whispered hoarsely, "Run, young master. The heavens have changed you."

Lin Xiao did not answer. He reached the end of the corridor and found a heavy iron gate blocking the way to the outer courtyard. It was locked with a thick chain and padlock. Behind him, the elder was closing in fast. Qi energy crackled in the air.

Lin Xiao gripped the sword with both hands and brought it down on the chain. The blade, infused with his remaining strength, sheared through the links. Sparks flew. The gate swung open with a groan. Cold night air rushed in. Rain had started to fall outside, just like the night he had died in his old world. He stepped through into the clan courtyard. Lanterns swayed in the wind. Distant shouts echoed from other parts of the compound. The alarm had spread.

He did not stop. He sprinted across the open ground toward the outer walls. Guards appeared from barracks on either side. Arrows whistled past his head. One grazed his thigh. Health dropped to twelve percent. Twenty more points. He ignored the pain and kept running. The system rewarded his defiance with another notification.

[Infinite Rebirth skill unlocked at 1,200 DP threshold. First life banked. Use once to return from certain death at full health.]

That was power. Real power. He filed it away for later.

Elder Lin Zhen emerged from the prison wing like a demon. His robes billowed. He raised both hands and sent a wave of cutting qi blades slicing through the rain. Lin Xiao dove behind a stone statue of the clan founder. The blades carved deep gouges into the marble. Chunks flew everywhere. He popped up and hurled the stolen sword like a javelin. It spun end over end and buried itself in a guard's shoulder. Not the elder, but it created a gap.

He reached the base of the outer wall. It towered thirty feet high, topped with spikes. Normally impossible for a Spirit Novice to climb. But he had the points. He bought the Basic Qi Boost for 150 DP. Fresh energy surged into his limbs. He leaped. His fingers caught the top edge. Muscles burning, he hauled himself up. An arrow struck his calf on the way. Health at eight percent. Fifteen points more. He yanked the arrow free and kept climbing.

At the top he paused for one heartbeat. Below him, Elder Lin Zhen had stopped at the base of the wall. The old man's face was purple with rage. "You will be hunted across the entire province," he shouted up at Lin Xiao. "The Lin Clan does not forgive betrayal."

Lin Xiao looked down. Rain mixed with the blood on his face. "Then come hunt me," he called back. "I'll be waiting. And when I return, every one of you who stood by while they tried to kill me will burn."

He dropped to the other side. The ground rushed up. He rolled on impact to absorb the shock. Pain flared in his ankle, but he forced himself upright. The clan compound lights faded behind him as he ran into the dark forest that bordered the Lin lands. Trees whipped past. Roots threatened to trip him. His breath came in ragged gasps. Health stabilized at seven percent thanks to the lingering boost.

The system chimed once more.

[Main Quest complete: Clan execution escape achieved. Reward: 500 additional Defiance Points. Total now: 1,565.]

[New Main Quest: Reach outer sect recruitment grounds alive. Survive three days of pursuit. Success: Unlock Defiant Overdrive stage 2. Failure: Soul erasure.]

Lin Xiao kept running. His body ached in ways he had never imagined possible. But inside, something fierce and unbreakable had taken root. He was no longer the weak young master everyone had written off. He was the host of the Infinite Defiance System. And this was only the second hour of his new life.

Behind him, noise sounded from the clan walls. Pursuit had begun in earnest. Dogs barked. Torchlight flickered in the distance. He smiled through the pain. Let them come. Every chase, every fight, every drop of blood would make him stronger.

The forest swallowed him whole. Rain continued to fall, washing some of the blood from his torn robes. But the fire in his chest burned hotter than ever. He would survive this night. He would grow. And one day soon, the Lin Clan would regret the day they tried to execute him.

Miles ahead lay the outer sect of the larger Yun Tian Sect. Recruitment trials were rumored to start soon. If he could reach them, he could blend in, train, and prepare for the real battles ahead. But first, he had to stay alive long enough to get there.

His footsteps pounded the wet earth. Each one carried him farther from death and closer to power. The system panel glowed steadily in his vision, a constant reminder of the path he had chosen.

Defy or perish.

There was no third option.

He ran on.
