The massive beast standing before them was terrifying. Judging by the protective roar it let out over the fallen female, this was likely her mate—the true patriarch of this Ursaring lineage.
Guinaifen's mind raced. In Pokémon, level gaps are the ultimate wall. In the late game, a twenty-level difference can sometimes be overcome with perfect strategy and IV training, but in the early to mid-game? Levels dictate everything: health pools, raw speed, and most importantly, the complexity of moves available.
Her level 30 Bayleef and newly minted level 30 Heracross were facing a Level 46 Ursaring.
"Heracross, we have to move! Now!" Guinaifen shouted. "Noctowl, find Bayleef! Tell him to meet us two kilometers east of the camp!"
Heracross could feel the oppressive aura coming from the Alpha. Though every instinct told the beetle to stay and fight for his pride, he chose to trust the human who had helped him grow. He scooped Guinaifen up in his arms, his wings blurring as he took to the air, skimming just above the brush to maximize their speed.
Behind them, the forest groaned. The male Ursaring didn't bother navigating the trees; he simply smashed through them, a juggernaut of fur and fury, his eyes locked on the culprits who had harmed his mate.
"Thanks, Heracross," Guinaifen panted, clutching his armor. "But you're going the wrong way! Turn left! We need to lead him away from the nursery!"
Heracross hesitated, looking back toward the hidden grove where the babies were. Guinaifen understood his fear immediately. "We aren't abandoning them. We're meeting Bayleef. If we don't combine our strength, we can't protect anyone!"
The mention of the little Pokémon worked. Heracross banked hard to the left, heading toward the rendezvous point.
The Mathematical Nightmare
As they flew, Guinaifen stared at the stream chat, which was reaching a fever pitch.
"Level 46? That's a 16-level gap. Even with a 4x Fighting-type advantage, the stat difference is too high.""Can Heracross even survive one hit to trigger Counter? A Level 46 Ursaring using Hammer Arm or Thrash will likely one-shot a Level 30 Heracross.""Guinaifen is a top-four strategist in the simulated universe trials, surely she has a plan?"
Guinaifen didn't have a plan—not a winning one, anyway. She was doing the math in her head. Even if Heracross survived a hit and landed a Counter, the damage output was tied to the HP lost. With such a massive level difference, Ursaring's total HP was likely double that of Heracross. A single Counter wouldn't be enough to finish it, and they wouldn't get a second chance.
"It's not enough," she whispered. "Unless... Swords Dance?"
If Heracross knew Swords Dance, he could double his attack power. But he was level 30; he hadn't learned it yet.
"Wait..." Guinaifen's eyes widened. "His Ability!"
Heracross had the Moxie ability (Overconfidence). By defeating the female Ursaring just moments ago, his physical attack had already been boosted by one stage (a 50% increase). It wasn't as potent as a double Swords Dance, but it was a multiplier that didn't exist an hour ago.
"That's the key," she muttered. "The Moxie boost from the first fight. It's the only way the math works."
The Final Stand
"Heracross, listen to me," Guinaifen said, her voice dropping to a serious, commanding tone as the eastern clearing came into view. "This enemy is beyond anything you've faced. You cannot win this with instinct. If you don't follow my orders to the exact second, the little ones will lose their home forever. Do you understand?"
Heracross, who usually bristled at being told what to do, looked at the horizon where his home lay. He gave a sharp, solemn nod.
In the distance, Guinaifen saw a flash of green. Bayleef was sprinting toward them, his head-leaf glowing with readiness. Noctowl circled above, acting as the tactical link.
Heracross landed, setting Guinaifen down. He stepped forward, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Bayleef. Opposite them, the Level 46 Ursaring burst from the treeline, its roar vibrating in their chests.
The chat went silent. This was it.
"It's our turn to fight back!" Guinaifen screamed, her arm outstretched. "Bayleef, Razor Leaf to obscure his vision! Heracross, don't wait—Pounce!"
