The third day of the Master Challenge arrived, and the atmosphere in the Liuyundu Stadium was thick with a new kind of tension.
The first two quarterfinals went exactly as the analysts predicted. Fu Xuan dismantled her opponent with a surgical 6-0 sweep, her eyes barely leaving her jade abacus as her Psychic-types danced around every desperate move. The Fruit Shop Part-timer followed, his "Triple Ditto" strategy proving once again that he understood the game's code better than the people who played it. He lost two of his transforms but secured the win without ever revealing a fourth Pokémon, leaving the forums in a frenzy over whether his entire roster was simply a pile of purple goo.
"Alright, everyone!" Owlbert boomed, his holographic wings shimmering. "What follows are the two matches the entire galaxy has been waiting for. Let's welcome the legend herself—Silver Wolf!"
The roar of the crowd was a physical force. Silver Wolf materialized on the stage, her expression bored but her eyes sharp.
"And her opponent," Owlbert continued, "a trainer who has defied every odd, grown through every scar, and turned every 'impossible' into a miracle—Guinaifen!"
Guinaifen stepped out from the tunnel. She didn't wave to the cameras or blow kisses to her 'family members' today. Her face was set in stone, a silent fire burning in her eyes. In the stands, Sushang was screaming herself hoarse, but her voice was lost in the sea of noise.
"She looks... different," a fan whispered.
"She's fighting a Stellaron Hunter. She knows if she slips once, it's over."
Silver Wolf caught Guinaifen's gaze. She had seen that look before—it was the look of a gamer who had finally stopped playing for the score and started playing for the soul. She felt a flicker of pride; her "encouragement" from the previous night had clearly taken root.
The Matchup: Logic vs. Intuition
The big screen displayed the known rosters. Silver Wolf's "Power Four"—Dragonite, Gyarados, Venusaur, and Cloyster—were public knowledge, leaving two slots as a terrifying mystery. Guinaifen's team was an open book: Wigglytuff, Charizard, Rhydon, Dragonite, Lapras, and Jolteon.
"Go, Dragonite!" Silver Wolf opened with her ace, intending to end the match with the same overwhelming force she had used in the exhibition.
"Go, Wigglytuff!" Guinaifen countered.
Owlbert fumbled with his Pokédex, his mechanical eyes whirring. "Oh! Guinaifen has predicted the lead! She's fielding a Fairy-type against the Dragon king! In terms of raw attributes, this is a massive advantage!"
The crowd laughed at Owlbert's frantic fact-checking, but the tension didn't break.
"I declare the match... OPEN!"
"Dragonite, Air Slash!" Silver Wolf didn't care about the Fairy-type's immunity to Dragon moves. She pivoted to Flying-type pressure immediately.
"Wigglytuff, Hyper Voice!"
"Pudding!" Wigglytuff's lungs expanded, and a visible, distorted sonic boom erupted from its mouth. The wave didn't just meet the Air Slash; it shattered the wind blades and continued its path toward Dragonite.
Silver Wolf's eyes widened slightly. She had never seen Guinaifen's Wigglytuff output that much power. She knew that at this range, even Extreme Speed might not be fast enough to dodge the expanding cone of sound. And even if it did, an uncoordinated dodge would leave Dragonite out of position.
"Fine. Extreme Speed—straight through it!"
Instead of retreating, Silver Wolf chose the "Gamble of the Bold." Dragonite became a white streak of kinetic energy, taking the brunt of the sonic damage to close the distance.
Guinaifen felt a jolt of panic. He's coming right at me? He'd rather take the hit than lose the momentum? Her mind raced, sifting through the thousands of simulated battles she had run the night before. This was the "Gap of Understanding" Julian had warned her about. Silver Wolf wasn't playing the board; she was playing the timer.
"Wigglytuff, Play Rough!"
The pink energy began to coat Wigglytuff's paws, but Extreme Speed was a law of physics. Dragonite rammed into the Fairy-type before the move could fully manifest, interrupting the attack and sending Wigglytuff tumbling backward across the grass.
Wigglytuff rolled, righted itself, and snarled—a sound far too ferocious for its cute exterior.
"Dazzling Gleam!" Guinaifen shouted.
"Light Screen!" Silver Wolf countered.
Dragonite threw up a shimmering barrier, but the burst of pink light was too wide. The Fairy-type energy bled through the edges of the screen, scorching Dragonite's scales.
Silver Wolf realized Guinaifen's strategy then. It was an "Open Gambit." Guinaifen wasn't trying to out-think a genius; she was trying to force a "Damage Race." By using wide-area, high-accuracy moves like Hyper Voice and Dazzling Gleam, she was forcing Silver Wolf into a brawl where subconscious reactions mattered more than complex mental calculations.
"You're trying to drag me down to a gutter fight, aren't you?" Silver Wolf murmured, a small, dangerous smile appearing on her face. "Fine. If you want a war of instincts, let's see whose soul breaks first."
