The exhaustion was no longer just a physical weight; it was a mental fog that threatened to swallow Guinaifen whole. This was the first time she had ever pushed her mind to such a jagged edge. Her vision blurred, the stadium lights dancing like dying stars, and a cold nausea roiled in her stomach.
She was at her limit.
Silver Wolf watched her opponent from across the field. She could see the slight tremor in Guinaifen's hands, the way her eyes struggled to focus. Part of the Stellaron Hunter wanted to pause the match—there was no joy in hacking a system that was already crashing. But this was the Master Challenge. On this stage, the only mercy was a clean defeat.
Julian Reed leaned forward in the VIP stands, his heart heavy. Guinaifen's journey had been a miracle, but miracles usually had a shelf life. Is this where it ends?
"Pudding..."
"Waaah!"
"Geng!"
Through the white noise in her ears, Guinaifen heard them. It wasn't the crowd. It was the echoes of the "Soul Link" Julian had granted her. The memories of her team—the stubborn Rhydon, the playful Wigglytuff, the brave Jolteon—surged through her mind.
"I can't... give up."
Suddenly, a jolt of pure adrenaline slammed into her system. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird, and the fog in her brain burned away, replaced by a terrifying, hyper-focused clarity. Her pupils dilated, her skin flushed, and her senses sharpened until she could hear the individual hum of the holographic projectors.
Fu Xuan and Welt Yang both straightened in their seats. They recognized that look. It was the "Berserk" state of a Pathstrider—a pure, unyielding will that transcended the limitations of the body.
Silver Wolf saw it too, and she couldn't help but laugh. The fire was back. The game was still on.
"Go, Charizard!"
Guinaifen's voice was raspy but steady. She knew her old "Fast-Pace" tactic was a spent shell. She needed to be water—adaptable, fluid, and unpredictable.
"Charizard, Ancient Power!"
The arena floor groaned as boulders were torn from the earth, swarming toward Silver Wolf's Cloyster.
"Protect your shell! Use Icicle Spear to shatter them!" Silver Wolf commanded.
But as Cloyster focused on the rocks, Guinaifen didn't wait. Her mind was racing ten moves ahead, her consciousness blurring into Charizard's. She felt the heat of the tail-flame as if it were her own breath.
"Flame Charge, now!"
Charizard, wreathed in a cloak of golden fire, tore across the grass.
"Blast them with Hydro Pump!" Silver Wolf countered.
A massive column of water erupted from Cloyster, but Guinaifen had already anticipated the trajectory. Her command and Silver Wolf's were almost simultaneous.
"Twist! Get behind it and grapple!"
Charizard pirouetted mid-air, the high-pressure water grazing its wing as it slammed into Cloyster's vulnerable back, locking its powerful arms around the shell.
"Seismic Toss!"
"Iron Defense! Spin and break free!" Silver Wolf shouted, realizing her thoughts had been read.
But there is no traction in the sky. As Charizard soared and began its dizzying, centrifugal spin, Cloyster was a prisoner of gravity. The impact of the throw smashed Cloyster into the turf with such force that even a defense boost couldn't save it.
"Cloyster is incapacitated!" Owlbert screamed.
"Now that is more like it!" Silver Wolf's smile turned wild. The thrill of the hunt was back. "Go, Gyarados!"
"Ancient Power again!" Guinaifen didn't let up.
"Hydro Pump! Sweep the field!"
The water jet pulverized the rocks, continuing its path toward Charizard. Guinaifen stared at the incoming torrent, time slowing to a crawl. It's weakened by the stones... if I take the hit, I can close the gap.
"Charizard, Flame Charge! Straight through the water!"
The crowd gasped. Charizard roared in pain as the super-effective water hit its flaming shroud, but it didn't stop. It burst through the mist, its speed doubled by the consecutive charges.
"Aqua Tail to stop them!" Silver Wolf commanded, trying to keep the dragon-mouse at bay.
"Dodge and use Fire Fang! Bite the neck!"
Charizard flicked its head, the Aqua Tail whistling past its ear. It sank its glowing, flaming fangs into Gyarados's neck, the heat causing the massive water-serpent to thrash.
"Shake them off! Dragon Tail!"
"Throw it up!"
Charizard used its jaw strength and the momentum of its flight to heave the massive Gyarados into the air. In the sky, the sea serpent had no leverage. It was a helpless weight.
"Ancient Power! Finish it!"
Rocks flew from every direction, pelting the airborne Gyarados. It tried to counter with a desperate Hydro Pump, but it couldn't hit every stone.
"Gyarados is incapacitated!"
The stadium was in an absolute frenzy. Two consecutive knockouts. Guinaifen had dragged the match back to a 1-v-1 tiebreaker.
Silver Wolf stood in her box, feeling a sensation she hadn't felt in years. It wasn't just the game; it was a soul-to-soul collision with Guinaifen. She reached for her final Poké Ball.
"You've earned this, Little Gui. Let's see how you handle a real wall. Go, Snorlax!"
The massive beast materialized, its weight shaking the stage. The final round was here.
