Chapter 52 - Chapter 52: The Evolution of a Trainer

"Go, Kangaskhan!"

Arlan sent out his final partner. In the competitive meta, Kangaskhan was a versatile powerhouse. Being a Normal-type, it had no glaring elemental weaknesses other than Fighting-type moves, and its move-pool was legendary. It could learn nearly anything, making it the perfect "Swiss Army Knife" for a defensive specialist like Arlan.

Guinaifen felt a bead of sweat roll down her neck. She had studied the popular builds; she knew Arlan's Kangaskhan likely carried coverage for everything.

Electricity for the wings, Water for the flame, Rock for the 4x devastation.

She took a deep breath, forcing her heart to slow. If she panicked now, her tactical timing would crumble. "Arlan is waiting for me to make a mistake," she realized. "I need to give him exactly what he wants."

"Charizard, take to the sky! Blast Burn!"

The dragon-like Pokémon soared, its maneuverability in the air far superior to anything on the ground. It was a stamina-intensive strategy, but it was Guinaifen's only way to increase her dodge window.

"Thunderbolt, intercept!" Arlan countered instantly. He chose Electric over Rock because of the superior projectile speed; he wouldn't gamble on a slow-moving rock throw against a high-tier flyer.

"Dodge and weave! Air Slash!"

Charizard pirouetted through the sky, raining down crescent blades of wind. Kangaskhan, despite its bulk, danced through the barrage under Arlan's meticulous direction, swatting away the blades it couldn't dodge. The damage was minimal.

"Now! Fake Out!" Arlan shouted, seizing the initiative.

Kangaskhan's body flashed with white light—the telltale sign of a high-priority preemptive strike. In the Real Version, this move was nearly impossible to avoid. The beast leaped with a sudden, explosive burst of speed toward the low-flying Charizard.

"Charizard, vertical ascent! Now!" Guinaifen screamed.

In the stands, the experts—Fu Xuan, Silver Wolf, and the Fruit Shop Part-timer—all frowned simultaneously.

"She's making a mistake," Silver Wolf muttered. "You don't run from a priority move; you clash or you shield. Trying to out-fly a Fake Out is a mathematical suicide."

But Fu Xuan's eyes narrowed as she watched Guinaifen's expression. The street performer wasn't frantic; she was focused.

"No," Fu Xuan whispered, a small smile appearing on her lips. "She isn't running. She's setting the hook. She's learned that if you want a cautious man to jump, you have to show him a ledge he thinks he can reach."

On the field, Kangaskhan's massive claws caught Charizard's tail just as the dragon tried to gain altitude. Arlan felt a surge of triumph—until he saw Guinaifen point directly at the center of the arena.

"Seismic Toss, now! Grab him back!"

Before Arlan could command a follow-up, Charizard's tail whipped around like a tether. Instead of breaking free, it used the momentum of Kangaskhan's own jump. It swooped down, its powerful arms locking around the Kangaskhan's torso.

"Let go! Thunderbolt!" Arlan realized the trap too late. He tried to interrupt the grapple with a point-blank electrical discharge.

"Hold on, Charizard! Don't let go!"

The electricity surged through both Pokémon, Charizard roaring in pain as the 2x damage rattled its frame. But the dragon was a veteran of Guinaifen's thousand losses; it gritted its teeth and began to spin.

The Seismic Toss in the game was a static move, but here, enhanced by the "Soul Connection," it was a masterpiece of physics. Charizard spiraled upward, using centrifugal force, rotation, and the raw pull of gravity to create a devastating vortex. At the apex of the spin, it hurled Kangaskhan toward the earth with the force of a falling meteor.

BOOM!

The stadium floor cracked. When the dust settled, Kangaskhan lay in a crater, its eyes replaced by digital swirls.

"Kangaskhan is incapacitated! The winner is Guinaifen!"

The silence lasted for a heartbeat before the crowd erupted. Guinaifen stood frozen, her chest heaving, before she realized she had actually won. She let out a shaky laugh and waved to her fans, her eyes misty with relief.

Backstage, Arlan stepped off the platform, looking at his Poké Ball with a complex expression. His phone buzzed immediately—a priority ping from Asta.

"Arlan! Don't be sad! You were so cool!" Asta's voice chirped through the speaker. "And hey, since you're already back there, can you get Guinaifen's autograph for me? I think I'm officially a fan!"

Arlan shook his head, a bitter-sweet smile tugging at his lips. He had come here because Asta had insisted he "bring home the championship," but as he looked back at the arena, his perspective shifted.

He had lost because of his own nature—his excessive caution had allowed a "chaotic" player to lead him into a trap. For a security chief, it was a profound realization. This wasn't just a game; it was a mirror.

"Next time," Arlan whispered, his eyes hardening with a new kind of resolve. "I won't be the one waiting."

He pocketed his phone and turned to find his rival. He had an autograph to collect.
