Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: The Devil’s Inspection

The darkness wasn't empty. It was heavy, thick with the sharp scent of ozone and the unmistakable metallic tang of human fear. The Grand Ballroom, once a gilded palace of arrogance, had been transformed into a cold tomb bathed in the rhythmic pulsing of red emergency lights.

"Is this... is this part of the show?"

A voice quivered from the shadows, thin and brittle.

"Where is the Prince? Where are the guards?"

The frantic questions were met only with a chilling, low-frequency electronic hum that seemed to vibrate in the very marrow of my bones. I felt Lucian's hand tighten around my waist. His fingers were like iron bands, marking my skin through the delicate black spidersilk.

"Don't move a muscle, Elena,"

He whispered against my ear, his breath a warm contrast to the freezing air.

"The Prince is simply clearing the board of the weak. He's making room for the real players."

[Warning! High-Density Energy Signature: Crown Prince Leo von Hestia.]

[Status: Initiating 'The Purge of the Unworthy'.]

[Objective: Reclaim the Eye of Valois before the lockdown is complete.]

Suddenly, a single, piercing white spotlight cut through the gloom. It didn't land on the auction stage. It landed directly on me. My silver hair shimmered like a ghost's veil, and my violet eyes glowed with a predatory light that forced a collective gasp from the surrounding socialites. I stood there, a terrifying vision of the woman they had buried, now reborn in the Devil's possessive arms.

Killian Astride took a stumbling, graceless step forward. His pristine white uniform was stained with the champagne of his shattered pride. He stared at me, his eyes wide and glazed with a sickening, sudden surge of regret.

"Elena..."

He whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood in a fire.

"You... you're actually alive."

He reached out a hand, his fingers trembling as they reached toward my face, as if trying to touch a mirage. I didn't flinch. I let the 'Sovereign's Presence' radiate from my skin in waves. The air around me shimmered visibly with the 'Celestial Radiance' I had earned.

"I am the nightmare you created with your own hands, Killian,"

I said. My voice echoed with the unnatural, harmonic power of the System, filling every corner of the silent hall.

"Did you truly think the mud of the gutters would swallow me forever?"

Killian's gaze dropped to my waist. He saw Lucian's large, scarred hand anchored firmly to my hip. He saw the thorned-rose mark—the seal of ownership—peeking through the high slit of my dress. The realization hit him like a physical blow to the chest.

"Thorne... you took her? You stole what was mine?"

"I didn't 'take' her, Killian,"

Lucian's voice was a dark, subterranean rumble.

"I simply saved what you were far too stupid to value. I picked up the diamond you threw into the trash."

Lucian pulled me flush against his side, his thumb stroking my skin with a slow, deliberate arrogance.

"And now, every single thing she is... belongs exclusively to me."

[Ding!]

[Emotion Triggered: Killian von Astride -> Extreme Regret / Lust / Despair.]

[Public Humiliation: Face-slapping in Progress...]

"She was my fiancée!"

Killian roared, his Alpha blood surging in a pathetic, desperate attempt to dominate a room that no longer feared him.

"She carries the Astride legacy in her veins!"

"No,"

I hissed, stepping forward into the center of the light.

"I carried your child, Killian. The one you murdered on the cold cathedral steps while the bells were still ringing."

The ballroom went deathly silent. The socialites, the dukes, the hidden cameras—all of them froze. Suddenly, the 'Whispering Archive' I had recorded in the tower began to play over the overhead speakers, clear and damning.

*"She was a mistake. A broken vessel. My family needs a bloodline that is pure..."* Killian's own voice filled the hall, cold and murderous. *"If she is seen in this city by sunrise, kill her. Make sure there's nothing left to bury."*

The guests turned their heads in unison, looks of visceral disgust replacing their lingering admiration for the Golden Boy. The "Perfect Alpha" was being stripped bare in front of the entire world.

"You... you recorded that?"

Killian gasped, his face turning a ghostly, translucent white.

"Elena, I can explain! It was the pressure of the council! The family name—"

"Save your breath for the bankruptcy court,"

I interrupted, my voice cold enough to draw blood.

"The Thorne Group has already purchased sixty percent of your family's outstanding debt. By dawn, you won't even own the clothes on your back."

Beside him, Sarah screamed. It was a high, jagged sound that finally shattered the last of her "Saintly Sister" persona. She lunged at me, her face twisted with a frantic, murderous rage, her nails curved like claws.

"You bitch! You're supposed to be dead!"

She reached for my hair.

"You're a curse on our family! You're ruinous!"

Before she could even get close, a blur of motion stopped her in her tracks. Lucian didn't even use his hands. A sudden, massive surge of dark, oppressive mana erupted from his body, a physical shockwave that threw Sarah back through the air. She hit the marble floor hard, her expensive white lace dress tearing. She looked like a fallen, broken doll. The pearls from her necklace scattered across the floor, rolling like tiny, pale skulls.

"Don't you dare touch my woman,"

Lucian said. The words were simple, but they carried the weight of a final death sentence.

"In this world, she is the only thing you are no longer allowed to even look at."

[System Notification: Face-slapping Completed!]

[Reward: Eye of Valois Hierarchy Established.]

[Points Gained: 5,000.]

The glass case on the main stage shattered with a crystalline explosion. The black diamond necklace—the Eye of Valois—flew through the air as if pulled by an invisible string. It landed perfectly in Lucian's outstretched, gloved hand. He turned to me, his blue eyes burning with a terrifying, unyielding intensity. He stepped behind me, his heat acting as a wall at my back. He draped the heavy, cold necklace around my neck, the massive black diamond coming to rest directly over my heart.

"It's back where it belongs,"

He whispered into my ear.

"But never forget the price of the recovery, Elena."

Suddenly, the red emergency lights turned a violent, flashing crimson. The System screen in my mind didn't just flicker; it began to bleed red text across my entire field of vision.

[CRITICAL WARNING!]

[Lucian Thorne's Obsession Level: 99.9% (THRESHOLD EXCEEDED).]

[New Condition Applied: 'The Eternal Cage'.]

[Status: Escape is no longer a mathematical possibility.]

I felt a chill that reached my very marrow. The 'Protection' Lucian had offered had finally, fully evolved into 'Subjugation'. He wasn't my partner anymore. He was my absolute jailer.

I looked up at the royal box. Crown Prince Leo was standing there, his gold eyes watching the carnage with a dark smirk. He was a predator watching two monsters tear each other apart over a prize he intended to steal.

"The auction is officially over,"

Leo's voice boomed over the chaos.

"But the hunt... the hunt is only just beginning. Mr. Thorne, I look forward to seeing exactly how long you can keep your new toy before she breaks."

The ballroom doors were blown inward by a squad of royal knights. Panic erupted. The elite scrambled for the exits, trampling over each other in their desperation. In the middle of the carnage, Lucian didn't move an inch. He picked me up, his grip possessive and crushing. He ignored Killian's pathetic cries for mercy and Sarah's hysterical sobbing. He carried me toward his private exit, his aura forcing everyone out of his path like a physical blade.

We reached the limousine. The city outside was a blur of rain, neon, and sirens. Inside the car, the silence was absolute and suffocating. Lucian didn't let me go. He sat me firmly on his lap, his arms wrapping around me like a heavy shroud. He pulled the silver tiara from my head, letting my silver hair spill over his broad shoulders.

"You did well tonight, Elena,"

He murmured. His voice was a dark, lethal caress that made my skin crawl with a mix of fear and electricity.

"The world knows you are alive. And more importantly, they know you are mine."

He leaned down, his lips brushing against my earlobe. I could feel the pulse of the System through the black diamond on my chest. It was beating in perfect, terrifying sync with Lucian's heart.

[Final Warning: The Contract has shifted to the 'Ownership' Phase.]

[Condition: Tonight is the First Inspection.]

"Lucian..."

I whispered, my voice trembling.

"The contract said—"

"The contract said I own your everything,"

He interrupted. His hand moved to the back of my neck, his thumb pressing firmly against the base of my spine. He forced me to look directly into the abyss of his sapphire eyes.

"Don't you dare forget the terms, my Queen,"

He whispered, his breath hot and smelling of faint smoke.

"Tonight, I'm going to inspect every single inch of the asset I've invested so much in."

He leaned in closer, his teeth grazing my ear.

"Everything you are... every breath you take, every drop of blood in your veins... it all belongs to the Devil now."

The car sped into the underground tunnels of the Obsidian Tower. The heavy steel gates slammed shut behind us with a final, booming resonance. The System screen flashed one last, ominous message before the darkness took me completely.

[Question: Is the revenge worth the price of the cage?]
