Chapter 7 - Chapter 7 – The Traitor Revealed

The Romano estate felt colder than ever that night, though the halls were filled with the murmurs of guards and distant city sounds. Alex moved silently, Elena at his side, eyes sharp and alert. Every shadow could hide a threat; every whisper could be a lie.

"They won't expect us to confront them directly," Elena whispered. Her fingers brushed his, brief but grounding. "Subtlety is our weapon now."

Alex nodded, gripping the rifle tighter. "I'm ready."

The evidence had been clear: late-night meetings, missing reports, unexplained movements. And now, Alex had tracked the spy to a secluded study in the east wing. The door creaked slightly as they approached, voices muffled inside.

He peeked through the cracked door.

Inside, Marco Vitale, one of Don Salvatore's most trusted lieutenants, handed an envelope to a shadowy figure on the other side of the estate gates. Alex's stomach twisted—Marco, the man who had trained him in loyalty, who had called him "family."

Elena's hand found his arm. "That's our traitor. And the wolf the note warned you about."

Alex swallowed the rising anger and fear. "We confront them now?"

Her eyes gleamed with deadly intent. "We do this smart. No heroics. No mistakes."

They waited, hidden in the shadows, as Marco stepped back, satisfied, unaware that Alex and Elena were watching. When he turned, Alex stepped out, rifle leveled, voice calm but cold:

"Marco Vitale. You've been betraying this family."

Marco froze, eyes widening. "Alex… you don't understand. I—"

"I understand enough," Alex interrupted. "You sold information to the Ferraros. You risked every life in this estate for your own gain."

Elena emerged beside him, gun trained steadily. "Don't even think about moving," she warned.

Marco's face twisted with fear and defiance. "You think you're ready for this world? You're just a kid who's lucky to survive! Loyalty is nothing in this life—power is everything!"

Alex's hands didn't shake. He thought of Luca Ferraro, of the siege on the estate, of the lives that hung by a thread because of Marco's betrayal. "Then power will decide your fate," he said.

The confrontation escalated quickly. Marco lunged for a hidden pistol, but Elena was faster, knocking it from his hands. Alex moved in, pinning Marco against the wall, eyes locked in a battle of wills.

"You're finished," Alex said, voice low. "And everyone will know what happens to traitors in the Romano family."

Marco spat in his face. "You think you're different? You're no better than me. This world… it chews up weaklings."

Alex didn't flinch. "Maybe. But we survive because we don't betray our own."

Elena cuffed Marco's hands, and together they led him to the Don's study. Don Salvatore's eyes, cold and calculating, met Alex's.

"Well done," the Don said. "You've proven loyalty is more than obedience—it's discernment, courage, and ruthlessness when needed. Marco will face justice, as all traitors do. But remember, Alex…"

"Yes, Don?"

"Tomorrow, the real test begins. Loyalty can't just survive betrayal—it must dominate the world around you."

Alex looked at Elena, who gave him a small, tense smile. They had survived the night. They had found the traitor. But in the underworld, survival was never permanent, and every victory carried the shadow of the next challenge.

And Alex knew, deep down, that this was only the beginning.
