Chapter 12 - Breakthrough on the Mountain

On the fifth night before the assessment, Lin Feng broke through to the eighth sublayer of the Body Tempering Realm; Acupoint Awakening.

It happened at the hidden valley, as he had known it would. He had timed it deliberately, spending the previous three nights in concentrated War God Art cultivation at the valley's edge where the dense Qi pooled thickest, eating into the barrier between the seventh and eighth sublayers grain by grain.

The breakthrough itself was quiet. He was seated at the lakeside, eyes closed, when the last resistance gave way. It felt like a wall of compacted sand finally releasing under sustained pressure, collapsing inward rather than outward.

The Qi that had been accumulating in his meridians flooded forward and found the first of his acupoints, the twelve primary gates that controlled the flow of energy through the body.

One by one, those gates cracked open.

The sensation was not painful. It was sharp and clear, like pressing a thumb into a joint that had been locked too long and feeling it release. Each acupoint that opened sent a fresh pulse of warmth through his body, and the warmth carried clarity with it, a heightened sense of every muscle, every bone, every breath.

By the time the process completed, the moon had moved two hands across the sky.

Lin Feng sat very still and let the new state settle into him.

Acupoint Awakening changed the body in a fundamental way. With the primary gates open, Qi no longer just flowed through the meridians in a single current, it distributed. It could now be directed to specific parts of the body with precision, concentrating force in a striking hand, reinforcing the bones of a guard arm, accelerating the legs for a sudden burst of movement.

A cultivator at Acupoint Awakening had a body that responded to will rather than just effort.

He tested it carefully. He raised one hand, pushed Qi into the knuckles, and felt the air around them thicken faintly with concentrated force.

"Good."

He reached inward and checked the War God Art's first stage progress. Battle Awakening was now at Late Mastery Understanding. Not yet at Peak, but close. He could feel the War Intent running steady and deep through his blood, the way a river runs deepest at the centre of its channel.

There were four days left, and he needed to reach Peak Mastery Understanding before the assessment. Not for the tournament itself, but because Peak Mastery Understanding was the threshold required to begin advancing to the second stage, Iron Blood Tempering.

He wanted that door open. Even if he could not step through it yet, having it within reach mattered.

He hunted the valley's surrounding hills on the way back.

The prey was a peak First-Order Spirit Beast this time, a creature he had been tracking for several nights: a Silverscale Serpent that had established its territory near a cluster of rare Ironbark trees at the valley's northern end.

The serpent was roughly four metres long, its scales gleaming faintly silver in the dark, its Qi dense and coiled with the particular quality of a beast that had spent years accumulating natural energy.

It detected him at thirty metres. The serpent uncoiled from its resting position with unsettling speed and struck low, aiming at his legs rather than his torso. A smart move.

Beasts nearing Second-Order had genuine combat intelligence. They learned from past encounters and adjusted their approach accordingly.

Lin Feng stepped aside and let the strike pass.

SWOOSH!

The serpent's head buried itself in the earth where his feet had been, and in the half-second it took to recover, Lin Feng brought both hands down on the back of its neck with the full Qi-reinforced weight of his Acupoint Awakening body behind the blow.

THOOM!

The serpent convulsed. It was not dead yet, but it was stunned.

He did not waste the opening. Two more precisely placed strikes, both using the Qi-concentration that Acupoint Awakening had unlocked, and the fight was over.

The devouring lotus activated the moment the serpent's life faded.

The energy was richer than anything Lin Feng had taken from a First-Order beast. A Second-Order Spirit Beast cultivated its internal Qi for years before reaching that tier, and the density of what poured into him now was correspondingly greater.

The lotus petals turned slowly in his dantian, both black and white, as they absorbed and refined the serpent's life force and Qi.

He sat with it for a moment after, feeling the energy spread.

His progress toward Peak Mastery Understanding of Battle Awakening had just shortened considerably. It was only a matter of time before he broke through to the next proficiency level.

He nodded to himself and almost started back toward the outer courtyards of the clan, when a sudden thought hit him.

"Oh, shit. I almost forgot about the sword."
