Chapter 5 - Don’t Make Me Stop

The door locked.

Clara didn't hear him do it.

But she felt it.

That subtle shift in the air.

That quiet, irreversible click…

that made everything inside her tighten.

"Did you just—"

"Yes."

He didn't even let her finish.

Didn't deny.

Didn't explain.

And somehow—

that was worse.

Her heart started racing again.

Faster than before.

Louder.

Like her body already knew…

this moment wasn't safe anymore.

"You shouldn't be here alone with me."

The words came out softer than she intended.

Not strong.

Not firm.

Almost like a warning…

she wasn't sure she wanted him to hear.

A pause.

Then—

he started walking toward her.

Slow.

Measured.

Unstoppable.

"And yet…"

His voice dropped.

Lower.

Closer.

"You stayed."

Each step echoed.

Not in the room—

inside her.

Clara didn't move.

Didn't step back.

Didn't run.

Because she couldn't.

Because something inside her…

was holding her there.

Waiting.

"You keep doing that," he murmured.

Now just inches away.

"Acting like you don't understand…"

A pause.

His gaze locked onto hers.

"…when your body already decided."

Her breath caught.

Sharp.

Unsteady.

"That's not true."

But it came out weak.

And he noticed.

Of course he noticed.

His hand lifted.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Not touching her.

Not yet.

Just close enough…

that she could feel the heat.

And that—

was enough to break her focus.

Because now her body reacted again.

Instantly.

Her breath shallowed.

Her fingers tightened.

Waiting.

For something that hadn't happened.

"You feel it."

Not a question.

His voice brushed against her like something physical.

Clara shook her head.

But it was too late.

Because her body had already betrayed her.

And he saw everything.

The way her chest rose.

The way her lips parted—

just slightly.

The way she didn't step away.

"That's the problem," he said quietly.

Another inch closer.

"You don't know how to stop."

Her pulse exploded.

"Then stop me."

The words left her before she could think.

Silence.

Heavy.

Immediate.

And for the first time—

he paused.

Really paused.

His eyes darkened.

Something shifting behind them.

Danger.

Real danger.

"Careful, Clara."

Her name sounded different now.

Lower.

Rougher.

"You don't say things like that…"

A breath.

Close to her ear now.

"…unless you mean them."

Her entire body tensed.

Because she didn't know if she did.

Or worse—

if she already did.

His hand finally moved.

Not grabbing.

Not forcing.

Just—

lightly—

tilting her chin up.

Barely touching.

But enough to send a shock through her.

"Look at me."

And she did.

Instantly.

Again.

Without question.

That was it.

That loss of control.

That automatic response.

That's what scared her the most.

His thumb brushed—just slightly—

along her jaw.

Slow.

Testing.

And her body leaned into it.

Without permission.

Without thought.

A mistake.

A dangerous, irreversible mistake.

"There you are…"

His voice softened.

But not gently.

Like he had just found something.

Something he wasn't going to let go.

Clara's breathing broke.

Because now—

there was no pretending.

No control.

No distance.

Just—

this.

This moment.

This tension.

This thing between them…

that neither of them was stopping.

He leaned closer.

Slow enough to feel.

Close enough to burn.

Not touching her lips.

Not yet.

Just there.

Waiting.

Giving her one last chance.

To step back.

To say no.

To end it.

But she didn't move.

Didn't speak.

Didn't breathe.

And that was all the answer he needed.

His voice dropped to a whisper.

Right against her lips.

"Don't make me stop."

And that—

was the moment everything broke.

Not with a touch.

Not with a kiss.

But with the realization…

That neither of them wanted it to.

And that was far more dangerous than either of them were ready to admit.
