Chapter 1 - The Price of One Night

I never thought my life would come down to a number.

Not love.

Not dignity.

Not even survival.

Just… a number.

The glass in my hand trembled slightly as I watched him from across the room.

He didn't belong there.

Or maybe… I didn't.

The ballroom glittered with money. Real money. The kind that didn't shout — it whispered. Crystal chandeliers, silk dresses, expensive smiles. People laughed too loudly, touched each other too casually, as if nothing in the world could ever break them.

But I knew better.

Because I was already breaking.

"Smile."

Daniel's voice came low beside me, tight, almost impatient.

I forced my lips upward.

"You're representing me tonight," he added, adjusting his cufflinks like I was part of his outfit. "Try to look like it."

Representing him.

That's what I had become.

Not a girlfriend.

Not a partner.

An accessory.

I took a sip of champagne, letting the bitterness sit on my tongue.

"Relax," he said. "This is important."

Everything was always important to him.

Everything… except me.

That's when I felt it.

A gaze.

Heavy. Intentional. Unapologetic.

I turned slowly.

And found him.

He was standing near the bar, one hand in his pocket, the other holding a glass he hadn't even touched.

Watching me.

Not casually. Not politely.

Watching me like he already knew something I didn't.

He was… different.

Not louder. Not more dressed up.

Just… dangerous.

The kind of man you don't approach.

The kind that approaches you.

"Who is that?" I asked, before I could stop myself.

Daniel followed my gaze — and immediately stiffened.

"Don't look at him," he muttered.

That only made me look more.

"Why?"

Daniel exhaled sharply.

"That's Alexander Hale."

The name meant nothing.

But the way Daniel said it…

Meant everything.

"CEO of Hale Group," he continued, lowering his voice. "If he breathes in a direction, companies move."

I swallowed.

Still looking.

Still feeling that gaze burning into me.

And then—

He moved.

Slow. Confident. Controlled.

Every step deliberate.

The crowd didn't part for him.

They just… made space.

I should've looked away.

I should've turned back.

I should've remembered who I came with.

But I didn't.

Because for the first time in a long time…

Someone was looking at me like I mattered.

He stopped right in front of me.

Too close.

Close enough that I could feel the shift in the air.

Close enough that Daniel went completely silent beside me.

"Good evening," he said.

His voice was low.

Calm.

But there was something under it.

Something sharp.

I nodded slightly.

"Good evening."

His eyes didn't leave mine.

Not once.

Not even for a second.

"May I borrow her?" he asked.

Not to me.

To Daniel.

My stomach twisted.

Daniel forced a laugh.

"She's with me."

A pause.

Then—

A faint smile.

Not friendly.

Not polite.

Something else.

"I'm aware," Alexander said.

And then he finally looked at Daniel.

Just once.

Just enough.

It was subtle.

But I saw it.

The shift.

The power.

Daniel stepped back.

Just a little.

And that was all it took.

Alexander turned back to me.

"Walk with me."

Not a question.

I hesitated.

I should've said no.

I should've stayed.

I should've remembered everything I was holding together by a thread.

But something inside me…

Something tired… something desperate…

Something that wanted to feel something different—

Moved.

And I followed him.

The balcony doors closed behind us, cutting off the noise, the laughter, the world I knew.

Cold air kissed my skin.

I inhaled sharply.

"You don't belong in there," he said.

I frowned.

"And you do?"

A small pause.

Then—

"No."

That caught me off guard.

Silence stretched between us.

Heavy.

Charged.

Then he turned.

Fully this time.

Facing me.

Studying me.

"You need money," he said.

My breath hitched.

"What?"

"I don't ask questions I don't already know the answer to."

My heart started beating faster.

Too fast.

"I don't know what you're talking about."

He stepped closer.

And suddenly, the space between us felt dangerous again.

"Hospital bills," he said quietly.

"Your mother."

My blood ran cold.

"How do you—"

"I told you," he interrupted.

"I don't ask questions."

I should've walked away.

I should've been afraid.

I should've been angry.

But all I felt was exposed.

Seen.

And then—

He said it.

"One night."

The world stopped.

"What?"

"One night," he repeated calmly.

"With me."

I stared at him.

Trying to understand.

Trying to breathe.

"And in exchange…"

He reached into his jacket.

Pulled out a card.

Placed it gently in my hand.

I looked down.

And my heart nearly stopped.

A number.

Too big.

Too real.

Too impossible.

"I'll take care of everything," he said.

My fingers tightened around the card.

My thoughts collapsed into chaos.

"This is insane," I whispered.

"Is it?" he asked.

I looked up at him.

And for the first time…

I saw it clearly.

He wasn't offering.

He was certain.

Because somewhere deep inside me…

A part of me had already considered it.

"I'm not that kind of woman," I said, my voice breaking slightly.

His eyes softened.

Just a fraction.

"No," he said.

"Not yet."

Silence.

The wind moved between us.

Cold.

Sharp.

Unforgiving.

"You have 24 hours," he continued.

"After that… the offer disappears."

I couldn't speak.

Couldn't think.

Couldn't move.

He stepped back.

And just like that—

The moment shifted.

"I'll be waiting," he said.

Then he turned.

And walked away.

Leaving me alone.

With the card in my hand.

And a choice that would destroy everything.

Or save it.

I looked down again.

At the number.

At the possibility.

At the price.

And for the first time in my life…

I didn't know what kind of person I was.

Because I was already wondering…

If one night…

Could really change everything.
