Chapter 70 - The Grant Revelation

The adrenaline that had fueled their flight from the ballroom floor began to turn into a cold, prickly static as they sprinted down the velvet-carpeted corridor. Hana was breathing hard, the heavy silk of her emerald gown rustling like a warning with every frantic step. She could feel the heat radiating from Alex's hand, which was still locked firmly in hers. Behind them, she heard the rapid, rhythmic click of Kiyo's heels, her best friend gliding in pursuit with the focused intensity of a bodyguard.

Hana didn't stop until she reached a small, unoccupied conference room tucked away in a quiet wing of the hotel. She threw the door open, pulled Alex inside, and practically shoved Kiyo in after them before the heavy oak door clicked shut.

The silence of the room was deafening. Hana whirled on Alex, her hair slightly disheveled from the dance, her eyes wide with a volatile mix of fear and frustration.

"What were you thinking? Alex, why would you do that?" Her whisper was sharp, cutting through the stagnant air. "The phones, the cameras... they were everywhere. By now, half of Seoul has seen that dance. My mother is going to have a heart attack before the dessert course is even served!"

Alex, however, didn't look like a man who had just committed social suicide. He looked radiant, his eyes still bright with the lingering high of the music. He simply smiled, that easy, grounded smile that usually calmed her, but right now only made her want to scream.

"I wanted to dance with you at least once tonight, Hana," he said softly. "I didn't want the only memory of us in this building to be a polite bow in a hallway."

"Oh man, you danced alright!" Kiyo interjected, practically vibrating with excitement. She was leaning against the conference table, her face flushed. "Everyone was in absolute awe. No one had a clue what was happening. I have never been so thrilled in my entire life, it was like watching a K-Drama come to life, only with better lighting and way hotter leads."

Hana ignored the commentary, her worry deepening into genuine, cold dread. "This is not funny, Kiyo. This isn't a show. These are my parents. They are going to find out, if they haven't already, and they are not going to be happy. They'll see this as an insult to the family. They'll see you as a distraction, Alex. They'll think you're just some opportunist."

"Well," a new voice rang out from the doorway, "I don't know about that."

The three of them jumped. The door swung open, and Suzy walked in. The American heiress stood there with her arms crossed, her expression a complex cocktail of accusation and a barely contained, mischievous smile.

Hana felt a jolt of relief and excitement. "Suzy! Oh, thank God. I was going to introduce you two later tonight or tomorrow. I didn't think you'd be here tonight." She turned to Alex, gesturing toward her friend. "Alex, this is my friend Suzy from America. We went to USC together. We were inseparable. Suzy, this is, "

"Alex!" Suzy cut her off, her voice flat but her eyes dancing. "Mr. Alex Walther… "

"Yes, Suzy, it's me," Alex added quickly, his voice carrying a note of warning as he wouldn't let her say his last name. He stepped forward, effectively cutting her off before she could finish the name.

Hana and Kiyo froze, their gazes darting between the two. The confusion in the room became a physical weight. Kiyo was the first to find her voice, her tone a disbelieving squeak. "Wait... do you two know each other?"

Suzy gave a long, dramatic sigh, rolling her eyes toward the ceiling. "Do we know each other? My whole life. I'm his little sister."

The shock was instant. Hana's jaw literally dropped, and Kiyo let out a strangled sound that was half-laugh, half-gasp.

Alex quickly stepped into the gap, raising his hands in a de-escalating gesture. "We've known each other since we were kids. Our families are... very close. We aren't related by blood, but we consider each other brother and sister."

Hana's eyes widened as the gears began to turn. "Wait a minute. Suzy... is this the older brother you used to tell me about? The one who was 'too smart for his own good and fiercely protective?"

Suzy nodded vigorously, pointing a manicured finger at Alex.

"And she's the 'sister' you mentioned back at the apartment?" Hana directed the question at Alex this time.

Alex let out a small, nervous laugh. "She sure is."

He stepped toward Suzy and pulled her into a warm, genuine hug. Suzy played her part perfectly, pushing him back playfully before landing a solid punch on his upper arm. "He's been barely talking to me or anyone else back home since he moved here!" she complained, punching him again for good measure. "I am so upset with you, Alex! You've been ghosting us all, most importantly, me."

Hana reached out, squeezing Alex's hand, her protective instincts kicking in even through the confusion. "Don't be too hard on him, Suzy. I'm fairly certain I'm a large part of the reason he's been distracted."

Suzy paused, a serious, inquisitive look entering her eyes. "But wait a minute, I don't understand. Why haven't you been with us all evening? My family is at the head table. We could have hung out! Although," she added with a smirk, "that was a total boss move you pulled, stealing her onto the floor like that. But why was everyone acting like you were an intruder, invading the dance? Why was the shock so... extreme?"

Alex let out a sharp, ragged breath, the full weight of the situation finally crashing down on him. The time for half-truths had expired. "Suzy... this was not the time or the way I was planning on doing this."

Suzy, always quick to read a room, looked at Alex's tailored suit, then at Hana's midnight emerald gown, then back to the desperate intensity in Alex's eyes. Her mouth dropped open. "Are you kidding me? Bro. Seriously? You're... you're doing the 'undercover' thing? Still?"

Alex stepped back from Hana, turning to face her fully. He took her hands in his, his grip steadying her trembling fingers.

"Hana, listen to me," he began, his voice dropping into a register of profound seriousness. "I was planning on doing this months ago, but then the Vanguard project took over our lives. Then I thought tonight, after the party, or tomorrow at the meeting... but the world is moving faster than I am."

Just then, a faint scuffling noise echoed from outside the door, the unmistakable sound of someone stumbling or pushing away from the door. Hana's panic returned with a vengeance.

"They're going to find out, Alex! They'll see the videos! They'll make us stop seeing each other. My father... he has so much influence. He might even have your visa revoked. They'll kick you out of the country!"

Unable to hold back the chuckle, Alex grabbed her by both arms, his gaze unwavering, pinning her with a fierce, reassuring look. "Hana! Stop. It's okay. I have something I need to tell you, and it cannot wait another second. I've seen enough K-Dramas with you to know what happens if I let this silence fester. I'm not who you think I am, or rather, I am exactly who you think I am, but with an added bonus."

He paused, the air in the room thick enough to choke on.

"My name... my full name... is Alex Walther Grant."

The silence returned, but this time it was different. It was the silence of a vacuum. Kiyo's voice, usually a fountain of snark and confidence, was a mere whisper. "You mean... as in... Grant Corporation? The Grant family?"

Alex nodded slowly, a warm, pleading smile touching his lips. "Yes. I'm the second son of the Grant Corporation. My father is the man your father has been negotiating with for the last six months."

Hana stood motionless. Her brain seemed to have hit a wall, unable to process the words. The man who had cooked her simple pasta, the man who had worked late nights in a cubicle, the man who had jumped into a river to save a stranger... was the heir to the very empire her family was trying to court.

Kiyo, ever the strategist, was the first to connect the dots. "But that means..." she started, her voice a disbelieving squeak.

Suzy cut her off with a decisive, triumphant nod. "Yep. My 'bro' is loaded. With a capital L. And an extra few zeros after that. Although," she added with a shrug and a wry smile toward Kiyo, "seeing as how all our families are loaded, that's not really all that impressive, is it?"

Alex took a step closer to Hana, his voice calm. "I was going to reveal everything either tonight or before tomorrow's signing. The head of the company, my father, is arriving in the morning to finalize the partnership with the Kang Group. It's the real reason I worked so hard to convince Min-jun to push for this deal. I knew the Grant resources were the only thing that could truly secure your family's future. My father has had dealings with yours in the past, and he's been aware of my... 'down-low' status within your family's firm the whole time."

Suzy let out a sharp, delighted laugh and smacked her hands together. "I've never known you to be so... so obserdily rediculous, Bro! I have got to know what has been going on here." Suzy looks over at Hana, "I have never known Alex to ever do anything like this. It's so...so...so cool." She let out a gleeful laugh.

Alex ignored Suzy's teasing. He reached out and gently placed a hand on Hana's cheek, his thumb tracing the line of her jaw. He ran his fingers through her hair, the touch so tender and familiar that it finally broke her out of her stupor.

"We are so much more alike than we realized, Hana," he whispered. "We were both just trying to find a way to be ourselves without the shadow of our names. I just happened to be hiding a slightly larger shadow."

Hana looked up at him, her eyes finally clearing. Her head tilted in a look that was suddenly, sharply accusatory. "You mean to tell me... that we could have been dating out in the open this entire time? That we didn't have to hide in closets or run away from my brother or my family?"

Kiyo and Suzy, standing side-by-side like a peanut gallery, immediately chimed in.

"Good point," Kiyo noted. "Ditto," Suzy added.

Alex smiled, his eyebrows lifting playfully. "Really? You're telling me that if you had known I was a 'Grant' from day one, if I had walked into that office with a black card and a security detail, would you have had any desire to date me? You, the woman who hates the Chaebol life more than anything?"

Hana's expression softened instantly. The anger evaporated, replaced by a profound, shimmering warmth. "Yes," she said, without a moment's hesitation.

Alex blinked, taken aback. "But... all those guys. The ones your parents set you up with. The heirs, the directors... you gave no one the time of day. You treated them like a plague. Why would I have been different?"

Kiyo nodded, adding, "Also a very good point."

A big, beautiful smile spread across Hana's face. She stepped into his space, her hands finding a firm resting place on his chest, feeling the steady, rapid thrum of his heart. She looked him in the eyes, her voice a soft, velvet caress.

"I said no to them," she whispered, "because they weren't you. They didn't have your heart, Alex. They didn't have your soul. The money doesn't change who you were when you saved my life, were a friend and collegue, or held me on the couch and..." Hana paused slightly, a wiked smirk crossing her face while she moved her hands to grip his suit tight, "...or other things. It just means I don't have to worry about my father's lawyers anymore."

She leaned in, her lips finding his in a soft, lingering peck. It was a kiss of relief, of recognition. It deepened almost immediately into a second, longer kiss, a passionate, public declaration of everything they had fought for. In that small conference room, with their two best friends as witnesses, the masks were finally, permanently gone.

Suzy immediately turned away, covering her eyes with a theatrical groan. "Oh, come on! I don't want to see my 'big brother' doing that! Get a room, wait, we are in a room. Get a different room!"

Hana laughed against Alex's lips, leaning into him, her heart finally feeling light.

BANG.
