The town was bustling as ever when a pigeon flew above it, a letter tied to its legs.
It flew to a tavern and went through the open window on the back of it.
The bird flapped its wings in the kitchen and went over to the area where customers were eating and drinking (and naturally talking, some even arguing).
There, it found its target amongst the people.
A young girl carrying two trays, attending the customers.
She was petite, clearly not even fifteen.
Maybe twelve, at most thirteen, and she was already working in the tavern, a smile on her face as she tended to the customers.
And those were mostly men roughed up by wars, fights, and hunts.
"Little one, did you get famous while I was gone?" a robust man resembling a mountain with his stature asked when he saw the pigeon land on the girl's shoulder as he entered the tavern.
The girl looked at him with the same working smile she used for all the customers.
"How could that happen to me, Uncle John, when all I do is serve in this tavern? Who would notice me?"
The man didn't ask anything further and sat down at one of the empty seats, next to some of his acquaintances.
But they clearly weren't friends because they tensed up as soon as they heard his voice.
But that was common in the area.
No one would be willing to show his back to any of the men in the tavern.
They sometimes worked together, but that was only out of necessity.
The girl quickly served what was on her tray and retreated to the kitchen to read the letter the pigeon carried.
A moment after she unfolded it, a few people in the tavern had to cover their ears as a shout resonated throughout the whole building.
"What do they mean by this?!" that was the girl shouting in shock and anger after reading just the first line of the two lines in the letter.
And the second line enraged her even more, but she no longer shouted.
The letter was from the Academy of Magic in the Capital City.
And the content was as follows:
"Possessing the Power of Death and Extinction, we should drive you out of this kingdom, but we've decided to show mercy and instead make it so you can't hurt others accidentally. A place has been made for you at the Academy of Magic, so you shall enroll next month, as soon as you arrive at the Capital City."
The letter had the seal of the Academy, so there was no doubt it was from them.
And at the bottom was signed the headmaster himself.
Also, next to that signature was another one with a stamp over it.
That was the Emperor's signature and stamp, making the letter equivalent to an Imperial Decree.
The girl had no chance of disobeying.
That would be considered contempt of Royalty if not treason.
