Chapter 12 - The night of the winter formal

The night of the Winter Formal arrived wrapped in snow and golden lights.

Riverside High looked completely transformed.

White decorations hung from the ceilings like falling stars, and soft music echoed through the gymnasium while students laughed and danced beneath shimmering lights.

For most people, it was just another school dance.

But for Maya?

It felt like standing on the edge of something life-changing.

She stood nervously in front of the mirror in her bedroom, smoothing invisible wrinkles from her dark blue dress.

It wasn't expensive.

In fact, Lily had practically forced her to borrow it after hearing Maya say she couldn't afford one.

But somehow, looking at herself now, Maya almost didn't recognize the girl staring back.

She looked… happy.

Her mother appeared quietly behind her.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then her mother's eyes softened with emotion.

"You look beautiful."

Maya smiled shyly.

"Thanks."

Her mother stepped closer carefully.

"I know things have been hard lately," she said softly. "But tonight… just enjoy being young, okay?"

That nearly made Maya cry.

Because despite everything, her mother was still trying so hard to protect her happiness.

A car horn sounded outside.

Maya's heartbeat instantly sped up.

Her mother grinned knowingly.

"I think he's here."

Maya rolled her eyes dramatically, though nervous excitement filled her chest.

When she stepped outside, snowflakes drifted softly through the cold night air.

And there he was.

Ethan stood beside Marcus's car wearing a black suit that somehow made him look older, calmer, unfairly handsome.

For a second, he just stared at her.

Completely speechless.

Marcus leaned out the driver's window dramatically.

"Dude, blink before it becomes embarrassing."

Ethan ignored him.

"You look amazing," he said quietly.

Heat rushed to Maya's cheeks immediately.

"So do you."

Lily popped out from the backseat suddenly.

"OH MY GOSH YOU TWO ARE SO CUTE."

Maya laughed despite herself while Ethan looked deeply offended.

"You were supposed to stay hidden."

"I tried," Lily said proudly. "But I love drama too much."

The dance felt magical.

Music filled the air.

Lights glowed softly overhead.

For the first time in months, Maya allowed herself to forget everything heavy.

No bills.

No fear.

No grief.

Just this moment.

At one point, she stood near the refreshment table laughing at one of Marcus's terrible jokes when slow music suddenly began playing.

The atmosphere around the room shifted instantly.

Couples moved toward the dance floor nervously.

Maya turned slightly—

And found Ethan already looking at her.

Her heartbeat stumbled.

He walked closer slowly.

"Do you want to dance?"

Simple words.

But somehow they felt enormous.

Maya swallowed nervously.

"I'm not very good at dancing."

Ethan smiled softly.

"Neither am I."

That made her laugh.

Then slowly, she placed her hand in his.

The moment he led her onto the dance floor, everything else faded quietly into the background.

The lights.

The music.

The crowd.

None of it mattered.

Ethan rested one hand carefully at her waist while their other hands stayed intertwined.

Maya's heart beat so loudly she was convinced he could hear it.

"You nervous?" he asked softly.

"A little."

"Me too."

She looked up in surprise.

"You? You're always calm."

He smiled faintly.

"Not around you."

The words hit her harder than they should have.

They swayed slowly beneath the lights, close enough for her to hear his breathing.

And suddenly Maya realized something terrifying.

She loved him.

Not a small crush.

Not temporary feelings.

Real love.

The kind capable of healing people.

Or destroying them.

Outside, snow continued falling heavily.

Hours later, the dance finally ended.

Most students rushed toward cars and rides home while laughing loudly in the cold.

But Maya and Ethan stayed behind near the empty football field.

The world around them felt strangely quiet.

Peaceful.

Snow covered everything in white.

Ethan shoved his hands into his pockets awkwardly.

"I don't really want tonight to end."

Maya smiled softly.

"Me neither."

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Then Ethan stepped closer.

Close enough that her breath caught instantly.

"Maya," he whispered.

Her pulse raced.

And then—

He kissed her.

Softly.

Carefully.

Like she was something precious.

Time seemed to stop completely.

Maya's eyes fluttered shut as warmth spread through every part of her chest.

It wasn't dramatic.

It wasn't perfect.

It was better.

Because it was real.

When they finally pulled apart, snowflakes clung to Ethan's dark hair while he stared at her nervously.

And somehow that nervous expression made her heart melt completely.

A small laugh escaped her.

"What?" he asked.

"You look terrified."

He groaned softly.

"I am terrified."

Maya smiled.

Then, before fear could stop her—

She kissed him again.

That night, lying in bed, Maya touched her lips lightly and smiled into the darkness.

Outside, snow continued falling over the sleeping city.

For the first time since losing her father…

Life no longer felt like something she was merely surviving.

It finally felt like something beautiful again.
