All that was about a decade ago – Moving to the present.
"Honey, wake up – I don't think Guilos will tolerate the tardiness today."
This time it was Dniz waking up Yellow. She had gotten promoted after her raise in knowledge stats, such that so she was only a single rank below her husband now. But ever since then she has been as lazy as him – too bad Dniz had gotten used to it, and the research exited him immensely, making it easier to wake up.
The researcher centre had become much more robust, offering more equipment and tools to not make not only research easier but also make living more efficient, so much so that they had updated their personal bathing rooms to become just as specialised, so the mass bathing had been removed – the suit was now so advance it turned between research and other clothing effortlessly.
This was from the advancement of the day staff workers because during the day this place was a completely normal research facility that produced results in more mundane things, but mostly their research heavily focused on making night shift research much more efficient, while fulfilling the conditions of a research centre and contributing to the knowledge in educational text.
"Sure honey, give me a minute, don't go please, I'd rather not be the only one late."
"Heyyy! For that I'll…"
Then he pulled her off the bed, if not for the fact she had unleashed the first seal and sat at a power level of 56, she would have been incapacitated, so you can imagine how frustrated this made her.
She then got up, he ran out. She stepped in the bathing room, and within ten seconds she was out, this place had reduced an hour of bathing to that much. She stepped outside their room then began chasing him since he had begun walking and started talking to one of the staff members forgetting who was on his tail.
He heard her footsteps and turned around, saw her and ran for his life. In terms of power stats, she was leagues above him. As she ran her suit then changed from nightgown to the bodysuit that looked deceptively skintight but as comfortable as the purest silk.
He then took a turn ahead, then grabbed a cup of their daily energy. Even whist chasing him these two knuckle heads stopped just to wait in the line. This drink offered a weeks' worth of energy in one gulp, and 90% of all of it is forced to the mind and all of the weeks' worth of energy was used up in one day anyway.
As soon as getting his cup he ran, and as she got hers, she ran for him too. They drank all of it down mid sprint. Then as soon as they finished, they ate the edible cups. They tasted holier than the most divine food on the planet, maximising umami, only second to those with special skills in cooking. The cup held no energy, but it was the ever-changing flavour that made their sensors jump for joy – the only sad part was that they only get to have this once a day – still impressive that they used so much energy in a day.
Usually, she would have chased him until they got to the main area and were forced to go to their respective divisions. Funnily enough, she is just going to have to elbow him in bed, after all he always falls asleep before her, so she stopped chasing him.
Not today though…
Just like magic, in this heavily secured place, in a single terrifying instance, a green glob of goo, filled with the still digesting parts of its victims appeared between them in an instance. Normal people would panic for twenty seconds before rationalising the situation – but they managed this in a split second.
They began running in opposite directions. But then they stopped, and turned, even at the sight of this grotesque thing, they couldn't help but feel the uncontrollable feeling that they were looking at each other as they saw the goo. She saw him as it and he saw it as her, they even failed to register the carnage coming from outside the building.
Unlike most of victims, these two were seeing two of each other. Because the goo made people feel it as the most valuable thing to them, but the most valuable thing was in the same room/corridor – for these two valued each other above all else.
It began to expand, and more noise began to come from the outside. The raid had begun. The fighting began but they stood no chance to these foes, they possessed a wide range of skills that usually only a single type of monster would possess.
Coming from Yellow's side someone grabbed her and began pulling her away from the goo, she began to frail, throwing a tantrum. She then freed herself and began running for the goo, but strangely she couldn't manage to do anything. Who to save? The goo or her husband? Wait, aren't they the same?
But due to the guard taking her out of range, her mind had become more open, thus she ran away, after getting far enough that the monster was out of sight, she remembered who she was. Then she constructed a plan quickly and ran. She had grabbed the lover who was closer to the wall, and began running back, then when she gained her consciousness, she looked at her hands, they had been scared with blood, only leaving flesh.
She easily pushed the pain to the back of her mind and began running back now she grabbed the other lover and ran along with him/it, keeping straight, heading for the main area. She knew that this thing could change the affection of a being but not their current memories and logic. Thus, she knew she could differentiate based on the damage, if none, then the first run would have left her hands okay, meaning it was the lover closer to the wall.
Sadly though, she didn't make it far before an explosion from the direction she was running in sent her reeling back to the goo before she reached a distance where her mind could free itself. As such she could not make clear thoughts about who was her real lover, so as she fell, she threw him away, she turned mid fall to embrace her true love – the goo, cushioning her from the fall in a thick blob of death.
She fell into it; she embraced it with a smile. The one she threw had just crossed the distance, for his mind to be less cloudy as he saw her fall in the monster. He had never seen her so happy before.
'WAKE UP‼!'
He then fell on the ground. Not because he had rolled out of the bed, but because his bloody back from the explosion had landed on the floor after she had thrown him out of range. He got up slowly, and he began crying, not taking a single step towards her, because even he had realised the effect the monster had on others. Even if he ran to save her, he would instantly confuse the sight for one where his most beloveds were embracing each other.
He could not see her face, but he felt the joy she felt. But it didn't make watching her die any easier
"At least she's happy…"
Instantly, he remembered his promise to her, and how not only did she fail to save herself, but he could not do the same for her. For her however, she felt so much bliss, being in the soft embrace of her lover, promising her that everything will be okay. All the pain, the grief, the anguish, was all going to be gone soon, the only feeling of loss she had was the fact that her other lover was missing out – or is it that she only had one?
She even had tears of joy steam as they fell down her face hit the goo evaporating. Then she turned her head, her face about to melt and fall off.
'What's this?'
As it turned out, seems the other one had come back and was in the embrace as well.
"I guess we're all here…" as she began wailing like a child who had only known war, tasting ice cream for the first time after being sent to a peaceful land.
He could not live without her, so he joined them, ignoring everything. Not only the married couple, but others also began embracing the goo, it looked strange from those at a far distance, like rats eating poison like it was the last delectable dessert on the planet.
Then the goo teleported elsewhere once more, leaving the corpses that were attached to it limp on the floor – only taking humans along with it as it raided another hallway. But even amongst the researchers, Yellow is the strongest in terms of power levels, so even with her state, she survived. A second more and she was a goner. She was under so much mental, physical, soul and will, related pain that her body shut down – leaving her in the pile of corpses with nothing but the silence of the now quiet corridor to lull her to sleep.
