Chapter 53
Venomous Threats
Elena
I was still jumpy the next morning while I dressed up, getting ready to go to work. Priest's discovery the previous day had left me rattled.
A tracker on my car? The thought left me feeling petrified, I hadn't been able to sleep at night, my mind wandering with stray thoughts.
Whatever it was, it couldn't be good. Heavens knew how long it'd been in the car I thought, staring at my reflection in the mirror. My eyes were slightly swollen from the lack of sleep, I was only grateful that Jenna had taken Lily to school so she hadn't noticed it.
I didn't waste time, within minutes I was all dressed and ready to go. I was stunned when I stepped outside, a sleek black car was parked at the curb. Before I could react the glass winded down, revealing Priest.
"I'll be taking you to work, Miss Elena," he nodded by way of greeting. I stared, my stomach twisting with dread as images of yesterday flashed through my mind.
Damien's orders. That was the only reason I could think of. He'd told Damien and Damien had ordered Priest to take me to work. Despite the fuzzy feeling I felt in my chest I couldn't help but feel worried.
"You're running late," Priest's voice broke through my thoughts at that moment. I nodded and got into the car, my mind on other things.
Within an hour I was walking through the company's doors, the place felt familiar yet strange I thought, glancing around.
It'd been weeks since I was last here, especially after that incident… the thought of that piece of scum, Mike Lipton made my eyes narrow. I could feel curious gazes and low murmurs as I navigated my way through the office, I wanted to get my things in order before going to see Damien.
I'd just turned round the corner when the sight before me made me slow down, and I frowned. 'What was Connor doing here?' I wondered, staring at the figure standing beside my door.
Ever since Damien had tossed him off the team Connor and I hadn't been on good terms, I couldn't have predicted the first person I'd see would be him.
"Welcome, Elena, it's been a while," Connor turned at the sound of my steps, he had a broad smile.
"I…" I hesitated, unsure what this was about. "It's good to see you," I glanced around, my body language tense.
"What do you want?" I asked, going straight to the point. "I don't imagine this is a personal visit," I stared at him, trying to appear impassive.
Connor's smile froze, before gradually fading away. "Ah, yes," Connor fiddled with an envelope in his hands. "You're not going to believe what happened," Connor chuckled, his eyes glinting with a devious light.
I felt my heart flip but I tried to remain calm. "What's going on?" Despite myself, Connor's behavior made me feel insecure.
Something was up.
"I'm submitting a query against you," Connor grinned widely, but his smile looked devilish the more I stared at him. "In this envelope are pictures of you together with our dear CEO, proof of an improper relationship between you two."
What! My heart thudded and I felt the blood drain from my face.
"These are your copies," Connor didn't conceal his triumphant smile as he handed over the envelope. I collected the envelope with trembling hands, my expression worsened when I caught sight of the photos. It was a grainy photo of me leaving Damien's house.
"You made me lose my position," Connor's eyes were icy cold. "Now I'm going to return the favor." A wide grin spread across his face suddenly, "I wonder what the Chairman, Mr. Lucas would have to say about this," Connor chuckled with glee while I felt my heart sink.
"Connor—" I began, trying to speak up but Connor didn't wait to listen to me. He turned on his heel and strode away, the sound of his heels felt like a hammer that beat my heart.
I felt my heart become cold as I stared at the photo in my hands, this wasn't good.
I quickly put the envelope away and walked down the corridor, heading to Damien's office. My mind was a mess, if the chairman looked into Connor's query I didn't dare imagine the consequences.
Damien's relationship with the chairman could be good, but it was anyone's guess what the consequences of this query could be.
I was so distracted that I didn't notice Damien's secretary Clara till she cleared her throat, getting my attention.
"I'm here to see Dam— Mr Damien," I coughed awkwardly, my cheeks reddening. I'd almost called him by name. "Is he inside?" I asked, quickly moving on.
"He's attending to someone," Clara glanced up, her eyes held a hint of surprise when she saw me.
"I'll wait," I hesitated before I spoke, moving to take a seat. I felt like I was seated on pins and needles, but I could do nothing more than wait.
How could Connor do this? How would the chairman react? I could lose my job over this… my hands tapped rhythmically on my lap as my thoughts spun around the place.
"Uhh—" a thought occurred to me and I turned to Clara. "Has Connor come here today?" I asked, catching her attention. I held a tiny seed of hope that he'd only been bluffing with that one single photo.
"Yes," Clara's answer made my heart sink further. "He left here half an hour ago," she looked up from the documents she was holding. I nodded, uttering my thanks but I couldn't feel my chest.
So Damien had seen it too? Was the reason he was meeting someone having any connection to this?
A wave of insecurity flooded into me and I felt my heart thud in my chest. I was deep in thought when the door to Damien's office opened and Damien stepped out, his expression dark like an impending storm.
I felt my heart skip a beat.
