Chapter 9 - Episode 9: The Almost Kiss

It was late evening.

The playground was empty, bathed in the soft glow of the setting sun.

We sat on the swing, gently swaying.

Neither of us said anything at first.

The world felt distant—just him, me, and the quiet hum of the wind.

"I… I'm glad you stayed," I whispered, barely audible.

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he turned slightly, his eyes searching mine.

"I promised," he said quietly.

"Didn't I?"

Something inside me fluttered.

A warmth spreading through my chest.

A strange mix of fear and longing.

Our hands touched—just fingertips brushing—but it felt electric.

I froze.

He froze too.

The air between us thickened.

My heart pounded so loud, I thought he could hear it.

"Don't… don't pull away," he whispered softly.

I didn't.

We leaned closer—slowly, cautiously.

Close enough to feel his breath against my cheek.

Close enough to see the softness in his eyes, the unspoken words lingering there.

And then…

A small voice in my head screamed: Stop.

But my heart ignored it.

We were inches apart.

The world disappeared.

All my pain, all my grief, all my fears… vanished in that moment.

And just as our lips were about to meet…

A loud shout from the distance shattered everything.

"Hey! What are you two doing?"

We jumped apart instantly.

My face burned.

His jaw tightened.

We both laughed nervously, though the tension still lingered.

I looked away, pretending to be calm.

He rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly.

But the moment had already changed something.

We knew.

We both knew.

Something was shifting between us.

And for the first time, I realized…

I didn't just need him for comfort anymore.

I wanted him.

Closer. Always.
